The light output measurement is performed by placing a Lux light meter beside the light. Both are pointed at the ceiling (five feet above) of a dark room. This measurement uses the ambient light produced by the bike light. We found this to be the most effective and repeatable measure of each light.
Pointing the light directly at the meter produced varying readings depending on exactly where the light beam was centered. Also, it was highly dependent on how focused the beam pattern was. Thus we chose the ambient light measurement test as the most effective for evaluating these lights.
Mtbr Lux Graph
Mtbr Lux Data – Mtbr Lux per $ is Mtbr Lux divided by price to indicate brightness per dollar. Higher values mean a brighter light for the money.
Light Meter and light are pointed in the ceiling of a controlled room to measure ambient light.

Looks interesting so far, will you be testing the 2013 Exposure range and having a look at the dinotte range again with the more in depth tests .I have had the xml 3 for a year now and just ordered the xml 1 i live in the UK.thanks
Is the Light and Motion Taz the 800 or 1200 version?
The Taz is the 1200 version. I’ll fix the captions.
Exposure 2013 lights are coming.
Is it too late for a couple of Gloworms?
Bruce, not too late. Email me at fcebedo@mtbr.com
New Exposure, Gloworms and Jet Lites are coming asap.
Stunningly well done . . . again this year. But sure you have all the backyard beam pics up? E.g., didn’t see either of the Dinottes. Counted 26 beam pics and 37 lights are listed.
Nice, very nice. Unless you get a dud, the MagicShine MJ-872 seems to be a value winner here. And it uses standard 18650 cells for its power, which the end user could, in theory, replace with a bit of skill.
Test any of the new Niterider lights?
The Niteriders are coming next week.
Any chance to include the Magicshine MJ-880 ? 2 x XM-L, claimed 2000 lumen
Where is the Serfas 1500 backyard photo? Thanks.
Oops, I found it in the 2012 article. Sorry!
The prices are insane! Our SG-T2200 is 2200lumens but our price is lower than USD200. I am wondering whether possible to list our lights on the comparing charter.
