Today, Crankbrothers is introducing the new Mallet DH/Race pedal. We’ve ridden with it a few times and we’ve already taken it apart. But to truly understand where the Mallet DH/Race is going, one has to understand where it came from.

First came the Eggbeater and although it was ideal for XC, the engineers started tinkering with it to give it a platform. Here is the prototype from 2001

That was a bit rough so the design team refined it a bit on the first revision released in 2003 as the Mallet M.

Version two cleaned it up a little bit with this design released in 2008 and featured adjustable height pins

And the current version, released in 2010 came out in three flavors: 1,2,3 as it featured a narrower profile and lighter weight.

But to meet the needs of modern day downhill racing, Crankbrothers revamped the Mallet with several new features merge modern day technology with the original vision for the Mallet.

I’ve used two pairs of the old Mallets. Performance was excellent, durability was not. I hope the old ones work as well and are a whole lot harder to break!

So the new features that make it so great are…?

Looks like a pretty average pedal to my eye.
