2013 Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival Report

Event

Introduction by Francis Cebedo

On this fourth rendition of the Santa Cruz Mountain Festival, I took the family out not knowing what to expect. Last year, there was an Enduro Race event in the adjacent Soquel Demo Forest and it attracted quite a crowd. This year though, that race was detached from the festival so I was curious to see if the expo could still attract a big crowd.

As soon as I got close to the venue, I quickly realized that this event was much bigger than last year’s. The participants and spectators where everywhere and the expo area was hopping. There looked like a dozen bike companies displaying their bikes and offering demos and the company tents stretched a couple hundred yards.

Numbers confirm it as estimates put the crowd at 9000 attendees which is a 50% increase over last year. Everyone seemed happy as Mark Davidson and an army of volunteers planned and ran this event to perfection.

A great bonus for many of the bike companies participating in the expo is they tied it in with the Sea Otter Classic. They just came to the Santa Cruz area 5 days early, did two days of the festival and stayed in the area for three days until they had to set up their booths for Sea Otter which is about an hour away. This allowed many of the hard-working folks to sample many of the hallowed trails that Santa Cruz has to offer. We predict that this is going to be a popular trend in the coming years and this will become ‘bike week’ in the area with these two back to back events.

My wife and I ditched Sea Otter in ’08 and went to Santa Cruz on the recommendation of the Santa Cruz bike guys and had the time of our lives. Didn’t even know about this festival, but we’ll be there next year for sure!!! JG
