At Interbike this year, there was a new outdoor section of the show called The Paddock. It was heavily criticized for being too hot and not having enough items of interest (unless your interests include taking a short test lap on e-bikes). Personally, I enjoyed being able to eat lunch outdoors and the mist flowing through the food court tent made the heat a little more bearable.
But the highlight of the outdoor venue was finding some new products in the Azonic booth. They have a brand new dropper seatpost called the Drop-In. It has 110mm of travel, comes in 30.9, 31.6 and 34.9 sizes and is machined from 7050 CNC aluminum with laser etched logos. It has a bar mounted remote and has a separate air/oil system and the air pressure is adjustable. The Drop-In weighs in at about 660 grams and comes in red/black. The MSRP is $299.99 and will be available early November.
Thin pedals are in and Azonic has the Flat Iron pedal that has a super low profile design and is only 10mm thick. The low profile brings the riders foot closer to the spindle axis, increasing the “rider feel” and reducing weight. The Flat Iron pedals have replaceable pins and it comes with “Fatty” pins for durability and use with knobby shoes. “Micro” pins are also available and riders can use a mixture of pins to dial in their pedals just how they want.
The Azonic Flat Iron pedals feature:
- 6061-T6 forged Aluminum body
- 4130 Chromoly spindle
- Oversized, sealed outboard bearing with additional internal bushing
- Removable allen set pins, tool included
- Average weight: 345 grams/pair
- Colors: Black, Neon Yellow
- MSRP: $149
The Club is a DH oriented direct mount stem is made from 6061 T6 CNC machined aluminum and has laser etched logos. It has 31.8mm bore diameters and has 45-50mm extension with 0 degrees of rise. It weighs in at 150 grams and comes in four colors (black, blue, red, orange).
The Pleasure Dome is a freeride/all mountain oriented stem made from 6061 T6 CNC machined aluminum and has waterslide logos. it has 31.8mm bore diameters and a 1 1/8″ steerer clamp. It has 50mm extension, 35mm stack height and 0 degrees of rise. It weighs in at 210 grams including screws and comes in four colors (black, blue, red, orange).
The Club and Pleasure Dome will be available in early November 2013.
The new Outcast wheelset from Azonic is a new design for them that attaches the spoke head at the rim so that they can ” increase the spoke nut length and strengthen the wheels overall construction.” The idea is that since the spokes don’t have to run as long as a normal spoke, flex between the hub and rim will be reduced and the wheel should be stronger and stiffer without being heavier. Unlike Azonic’s popular Outlaw wheelset, the Outcast is designed for XC and light trail riding. The Outcast also features a 4 bearing Novatec rear hub, oversized Novatec front hub and the many options for axle configurations.
The Outcast wheels feature:
- Weight – 1790g
- 6000 Series Aluminum Rim
- Stainless Steel Spokes
- 7075 Aluminum Spoke Nuts
- 7075 Aluminum Cassette Body
- Sealed Cartridge Bearings
- Colors Red/Black, White/Black
- 135mm spacing (converts to 142mm)
The Outcast 26 is available now and 27.5 and 29er versions will be coming Spring of 2014.
O’Neal is part of the same company as Azonic and they have some new mountain bike shorts called the Maniac. These shorts have mesh venting and come with a detachable inner chamois. The Maniac has a 360′ belt closure system, secure zippered pockets and is a very lightweight material that stretches so it won’t inhibit pedaling. It has a detachable optics wipe, iPod pocket and a stash pocket. MSRP of this short is $149.99
