Hutchinson First to Bring Universal Standard for Tubeless to 29er Market

December 29, 2007-Trenton, NJ-Hutchinson Tires announced today that it is the first bicycle tire manufacturer to produce a 29 inch MTB tire with the official UST stamp of approval.

Hutchinson Tires has been at the forefront of tubeless tire development throughout its long history. Pioneering the development and introduction of tubeless mountain bike tires in the late 90’s, Hutchinson worked closely with Mavic to create an international tubeless standard which was coined UST. More recently, Hutchinson became the first and, to date, only manufacturer of production Tubeless Road tires which were developed in close partnership with Shimano.

With the popularity of 29 inch mountain bikes skyrocketing over the last year, Hutchinson recently released their industry standard, high volume, small tread block Python tire in a 29” size. The tire was launched earlier this year at the Sea Otter Classic with Mavic which launched its new C29ssmax tubeless wheel. Engineers from Hutchinson and Mavic were still putting the tire/rim combination through the rigorous testing required of all products seeking Universal Standard for Tubeless designation. Last month, with the official stamp of approval from the UST testing lab, Hutchinson began manufacturing the first ever UST 29er Tubeless Ready mountain bike tires.

These official UST tires are all manufactured as Tubeless Ready so using latex is a must. Hutchinson recommends its Fast’Air latex aerosol to properly install these superlight UST tires.

The Python 29er has proven to be a favorite among the “big wheel” crowd. For those who value a large volume tire that rolls fast, offers excellent all-around traction and can be set up as tubeless without the worry of blowing a bead or burping air mid ride, the Python 29er is destined to become the tire of choice. Weighing in at a competitive 645 grams the tire is offered with a supple 127 tpi casing and measures at a true 2.1 inch width.

The tires featuring the UST stamp should be available to the public through bicycle dealers in January.

In addition to the Python 29er Tubeless Ready UST tire, every tire in Hutchinson’s extensive line-up of tubeless mountain bike tires proudly display the UST logo signifying dedication to quality and safety.

Italian Influx as Exhibitor Records Tumble and NAHBS Calendar Launched

November 30th, 2007 by Gregg

nahbs_cal.jpg
NAHBS 2008 Indicates Increasing Activity and Interest In Handmade Market
2007-11-28

SPEEDWAY, Indiana (Nov. 28, 2007) – The North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS), scheduled for February 8-10, 2008 in Portland, Oregon, is not only the world’s largest trade/consumer show for custom-built bicycles, but now it is setting new records for exhibitor participation, and is attracting the finest names from the great tradition of Italian frame builders. In response to the strong interest, NAHBS is producing two 2008 commemorative calendars: one exclusively for track bikes and single speeds, the other for general bicycles.

“I’m really excited about the show this year,” says NAHBS show director Don Walker. “Last year we had 103 exhibitors, we’re already at 113 and registration remains open until December 15, so we still have two weeks to go.”

A notable increase in interest comes from Italy. In 2007 three Italian names were represented at the show. This year, Columbus is back, Passoni, Dedaccai, Zullo Tiziano will exhibit, and quite possibly Pegoretti will return for a second year. “For us, this is an important step up. Ultimately we would like this to be seen as an international show, and given the size of the US market, I have faith that this will happen. I understand that the De Rosa family is sending a representative to assess the feasibility of exhibiting in 2009,” said Walker.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but many of the great Italian names now outsource their frame building to East Asia, and therefore would not be eligible to exhibit at NAHBS. All the frame builders at our show build in-house. These are the people who actually make your bike, and that’s the whole point of the show: Would-be purchasers can walk around the booths see which styles and materials they like, they can talk directly to the builder, see which builders suit them best, and start a relationship that often lasts for decades,” explained Don Walker.

With so much interest in a show that many Americans are unable to attend for geographic reasons, commemorative calendars are available that showcase some of the most alluring pictures of the beautiful bicycles on display at the NAHBS show. “We have a track bike calendar, since recently there has been such a strong interest in this most pure of bicycles, and then we have a general calendar that presents the enormous range of designs and materials on display at the show. Yup, there’s some carbon fiber in both calendars,” says Walker. Retailers may contact Don Walker with enquiries, and individuals may visit www.handmadebicycleshow.com to purchase their online copies, competitively priced at $14.95.

About The North American Handmade Bicycle Show, and list of exhibitors.
The North American Handmade Bicycle Show held in 2008 at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland, February 8-10, 2008, is dedicated to showcasing the talents of individuals around the world whose art form is the bicycle. It aims to be a gathering point – online and in person – for frame builders and consumers looking for custom-made bikes, for the sharing of ideas and promotion of this special industry which has such a rich history. After three years of growing by leaps and bounds, NAHBS 2008 will feature still more exhibitors, consumers and a wealth of seminars. For more information, see http://www.handmadebicycleshow.com.

Norridge, Illinois (November 28, 2007) Black tires are so last century. With SweetskinZ tires you get art on wheels with the company’s multi-color tire patterns, and with Lexco you get easy ordering of the full line of tires including the new and exciting 2008 SweetskinZ designs.

Sweekskinz tires not only offer high performance tires in 26 and 20 inch diameters and widths from 1.95 to 2.25, but full-color graphics in 13 spectacular patterns each built into the tire during the production process. SweetskinZ tires come in eight popular tread patterns, from commuter to mtb to freeride, plus, all SweetskinZ tires make night riding safer because they reflect light. And for road commuters, 700 x 37c road tires are available in four different color schemes.

New for 2008 are a multitude of distinctive full-color patterns including Red White & Blue (perfect for showing patriotism while riding), SZ-1 with its graffiti pattern, the Digicamo for in-the-brush stealth exploration, the Native American-inspired Tribe, Pink Hibiscus’ feminine side, and the red and black dotted fade Eclipse.

“We like SweetskinZ tires for a multiple of reasons,” says Karen Peterson of Lexco. “The tires are fun for sure, but they also offer a safety function with their nighttime reflectivity. Plus the tires are extremely well made from quality materials, and dealers really enjoy the tires sell-through with many customers coming back for different patterns to install on their second and third bikes.”

“We partnered with Lexco because we believe they can provide retailers
across the country with a quick, reliable way to order SweetskinZ
tires,” said the company’s Vic President of Sales, Vic Rollins. “For
2008 we want dealers to be able to capitalize on the surge of popularity
and demand SweetskinZ is experiencing around the world and we believe
Lexco can best help them meet that demand.”

The new 2008 SweetskinZ tire designs will be available beginning January, 2008.

Ritchey Design Inc. Chooses SOAR Communications to Manage its U.S.A. Public Relations Efforts

November 28th, 2007 by adam

logo

SAN CARLOS, Calif. - Nov. 28, 2007 - Ritchey Design Inc., founded by mountain bike pioneer Tom Ritchey, today announced that it has hired SOAR Communications to manage its public relations efforts in the United States.

Under terms of the agreement, SOAR Communications, a full-service marketing communications agency, will provide Ritchey with public relations and marketing communications services and products to promote its business efforts under a 12-month contract that came into effect on Nov. 1, 2007.

Following several years of continued sales growth through its original equipment manufacturers, distributors and independent bicycle retail partners, as well as enjoying strong brand recognition with cycling enthusiasts, Ritchey Design’s management felt they were not reaching their full market potential. Hence, Ritchey Design hired SOAR Communications, a Utah-based full-service strategic marketing communications agency focused on the sports, outdoor, athletics, recreation and sporting goods industries, to help with its U.S. public relations efforts and Web 2.0 online marketing efforts.

“We have strong brand momentum now, thanks to our wholesale and retail partners,” said Steve Parke, Ritchey Design USA’s general manager and vice president of marketing. “We want to continue that momentum, so for the first time in many years we are hiring an outside agency to give us a fresh perspective. SOAR’s credentials within the bicycle industry are solid, and I am impressed with their knowledge and experience communicating to a wider audience.”

SOAR Communications currently represents multiple companies and corporations within the cycling industry, including the Interbike OutDoor Demo and International Bicycle Expo, Delta 7 Sports, Blackbottoms Cycle Wear, Slipstreamz and non-profit organizations Bikes for Kids Utah and Trips for Kids. Chip Smith is the president of SOAR Communications and previously spent 10 years with bicycle industry leaders Shimano and Specialized in various marketing communication and sales positions before joining SOAR in 2005.

“Ritchey Design has a great history and offers very smart, well-designed products,” Smith said. “We are looking forward to working very closely with everyone at Ritchey to continue that successful history using a smart, well-thought out public relations strategy.”

Ritchey Design was established in 1974 by Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee Tom Ritchey. Prior to forming the company, Ritchey was an accomplished road racer and earned a spot on the U.S. National Junior’s Team where he competed at the 1974 Junior’s World Championships in Warsaw, Poland. In order to have the best equipment, Ritchey began designing and building his own bikes when he was 15-years-old. Ritchey was also one of Northern California’s pioneers of mountain biking in the early 1980s. During this time he experienced the design deficiencies of products on the market and began his product development career refining existing products, as well as developing completely new products under the Ritchey Mountain Bikes brand name, later to become Ritchey Design.

Tom Ritchey is president and lead product designer at Ritchey Design. The company currently has four offices, with corporate headquarters in Sparks, Nevada, a sales and warranty office in San Carlos, California, an international sales office in Lugano, Switzerland, and a manufacturing / product development liaison office in Taichung, Taiwan.

SOAR Communications is a leading sports marketing communications agency founded by David Politis, who also heads Politis Communications (a long-time strategic communications and public relations agency focused on serving technology clients). Capitalizing on his experience in the high-tech industry, Politis formed SOAR Communications as a subsidiary of POLITIS, LLC in 2004 to provide marketing communications services to the sports, outdoor, athletics and recreation industries, thus the acronym S-O-A-R. In addition to its clients in the cycling industry, SOAR Communications also provides marketing services to the Health+Fitness Business Expo, Redwood Parks Lodge Company and RIM Hospitality, to name a few.

WORLD AIDS DAY BIKE RIDE

November 27th, 2007 by adam

logo

Worldwide simultaneous 27-mile bike ride to raise awareness for World AIDS
Day Hosted by Until There’s A Cure Cycling Team

LOS ANGELES - Nov. 27, 2007 - On Saturday December 1, 2007, cyclists from all over the world will participate in World AIDS Day by cycling 27 miles to commemorate 27 years of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The Los Angeles Ride will start at 6150 Wilshire Blvd and travel through Beverly Hills via Rodeo Drive to Santa Monica and back through West Hollywood. All rides will start at 8:00 a.m. Cities and townships from all over the United States and the world have committed to highlight critical awareness by cycling in organized groups and wearing red symbolizing the AIDS ribbon.

Some of the cities participating in this event are: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Tucson, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Montreal, London and Sydney. Additional cities are signing up daily.

This year’s ride will honor HIV-positive three- year-old Caleb Glover. This past July while on vacation with his foster parents in Alabama, Caleb was denied access to the swimming pool and showers at Alabama’s Wales West RV Resort. The incident received national attention including a segment on ABC TV’s Good Morning America where Until There’s a Cure (UTAC) member and ride organizer Brian Hodes first heard about Caleb’s ordeal.

The World AIDS Day ride organizes groups around the world to ride to raise awareness of the perception and stigma associated with HIV. So far Hodes has spoken to people in England, Czechoslovakia and Australia about having bike rides in their communities. In cities where December’s cooler weather could present a challenge, Hodes suggests organizing spin class marathons at local gyms.

Silvia Glover, Caleb’s foster mother, expressed her support for Hodes’ efforts.

“I’m totally blown away that people all the way in California heard about Caleb and want to raise awareness,” Glover said. “It’s such an honor and such a good opportunity.”

Caleb’s health is now precarious because of complications from HIV and his medication, and he might have to have a feeding tube installed.

“Caleb’s had a harder time than most,” she said, “but he’s a fighter.”

Hodes, who is also a rider in the fundraising AIDS LifeCycle ride, a 545-mile bicycle ride from San Francisco to LA, will be riding in Los Angeles on Dec. 1.

There are several rides in the greater San Francisco Area. The largest in that area is expected to be in San Francisco. It is being organized by the Positive Pedalers, a national group of people living with HIV/AIDS who are committed to eliminating the stigma of disease through positive public example. For more information visit www.Pospeds.org.

About Until There’s A Cure
Until There’s A Cure (UTAC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating HIV/AIDS by raising awareness and funds for vaccine development, care services and youth education. For additional information about Until There’s A Cure, please call 1-800-88-UNTIL or visit www.until.org.

About World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day, observed December 1 of each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, with an estimated 33.2 million people living with HIV, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 3.1 million (between 2.8 and 3.6 million) lives in 2006 of which, more than half a million (570,000) were children.

SANTA CRUZ SYNDICATE WELCOMES GREG MINNAAR!

November 26th, 2007 by adam

banner

November 20, 2007

Santa Cruz, California

The Santa Cruz Syndicate is excited to welcome Greg Minnaar onto the Syndicate for the next two downhill racing seasons! We expect the addition of Minnaar to raise the bar even higher for the Syndicate and are eager to get the new Santa Cruz V-10 underneath him. Having Steve Peat, Nathan Rennie, and Josh Bryceland work and train together with Minnaar should elevate the playing field to new levels in the downhill arena.

Rob Roskopp (owner, Santa Cruz Bicycles), has had an eye on Minnaar for a few years now, and when Honda made the decision to end their involvement in downhill racing, Roskopp saw this as the chance he was waiting for to add Minnaar to the successful Syndicate program. Having talented bike racers with big personalities is a prerequisite for the Syndicate, and Minnaar brings his professionalism, engaging personality and dedication to his craft to the squad. Something that impressed Roskopp the most was Minnaar’s performance at the World Championships in Fort William, Scotland, when in his race run, he crashed and continued on to a successful 4th place finish with a dislocated shoulder and broken scapula suffered in the crash! Witnessing that type of mental determination and control was compelling for Roskopp to aggressively pursue signing Minnaar.

Roskopp comments, “I’m very excited to have Greg on the Syndicate. I admire his talent, professionalism and work ethic and have wanted him on the Syndicate for some time. The Syndicate will now have a broad range in the downhill squad from young, up and coming Josh, to seasoned pros and legends, and will truly be a very international group. Having Greg will be amazing, and I look forward to seeing him race on the V-10.”

“The most important factor for me in choosing a team I race for is the level of support, and the ability to race at my best. It’s clear that the Syndicate is driven by people who love to race. To have a race winning bike beneath me as well as team mates that will continue to push me, makes me very excited about the upcoming season. We are going to be a pretty tough team to beat!” says Minnaar.

Something we strive for in the Syndicate is to create an environment where each rider can express their unique individuality and develop their personas in the sport. Supporting and maintaining the momentum Minnaar has attained in his career will be a feature of his program.

Steve Peat remarks, “Greg is going to be a huge asset to the Syndicate. He and I have been friends since he first visited the UK, a long time ago, and I can see how his drive to win along with his professionalism will be a huge plus for us on the circuit. Welcome aboard Greg!”

Josh Bryceland excitedly says, “That’s awesome news! I can’t think of a much stronger group with Steve, Nathan and Greg! I have looked up to Greg as much as I have Nathan and Steve the whole time. His style and his consistency will just make the Syndicate even stronger! Also, we can both be newcomers together, ha-ha!”

Nathan Rennie welcomes Greg to the team with his sense of humor, “Looks like there are going to be three naked 6’ 3” men in the back of Steve’s van this year. I had enough trouble understanding Steve’s accent…. Welcome, and oh, by the way, that’s my sandwich Greg.”

Once again, it is with great pleasure that we make this announcement and welcome Greg to the Syndicate!

Brendan Fairclough Signs With Team Monster Energy/Iron Horse

November 26th, 2007 by adam

November 25, 2007

Holbrook, New York, USA

19-year-old British downhill star Brendan Fairclough announced today that he has just signed a two-year deal with one of the most successful teams on the International Mountain Bike circuit, Team Monster Energy/Iron Horse. The signing of the former Honda Team G-Cross rider will see Brendan lining up alongside four time World Champion and defending World Cup Series Champion, Australian Sam Hill.

The team will have Brendan competing in all the World Cup races, as well as key major events such as Sea Otter Classic, US Open, Crankworx, and selected British NPS events. Brendan will be racing the dw-link equipped Iron Horse Sunday for all of his downhill competitions.

Brendan flew to the US over the Thanksgiving holiday to meet with the team and had this to say:

“Joining Team Monster Energy/Iron Horse is a major deal for me. I’m excited to be racing on a team that has a great image in the sport and is known for supporting its riders. I’ve been lucky to have had excellent team mates like Steve Peat, Greg Minnaar, and Matti Lehikoinen throughout my young career, and being part of Team Monster Energy/Iron Horse is a continuation of that. Next year I have some pretty specific goals, not the least of which is grabbing some crystal at the end of the World Cup season when the series finishes on a track that Sam and I love, Schladming. I can’t wait to get racing next year!”

Iron Horse Marketing Manager Todd Seplavy was equally enthused:

“We’re excited to have Brendan come fly the Monster Energy/Iron Horse colors for us and were really looking forward to having him grow with our program. We’ve been impressed with Brendan’s riding skills, professionalism, and personality from the first time he blasted onto the World Cup scene. He’ll be a perfect fit onto our program and a valuable asset to all of our sponsors.”

Team Director Sean Heimdal added:

“This was a logical step for us in 2008. I wanted to put together a leading two-man team and when thinking of a rider that could come into our program and compliment Sam, as well as learn and grow, well Brendan was my first choice. Having him here over the past few days has been excellent and we can’t wait to get him on a bike for testing.”

Brendan’s first race with Team Monster Energy/Iron Horse will be the Sea Otter Classic in April of 2008.

The Los Gatos Turkey ride is annual tradition that has been going on for over 10 years. On Thanksgiving morning, cyclists go up the mountain through Kennedy trail from downtown Los Gatos. The mountain is steep at 2200 feet but the spirit and camaraderie is awesome. This year, mtbr and friends went big with several turkeys, roast pig, keg, and furniture.
