(Seattle, WA) nuun-creator of the sugar-free quick-dissolving electrolyte sports drink tablet—has added a new flavour to its family in 2008-orange ginger. Orange ginger is nuun’s fifth flavor— it joins lemon+lime, tri-berry, citrus fruit and kona cola to gives cyclists and runners more choices in the replenishing electrolyte drink.

Orange-ginger is available in two sizes. Each tablet of nuun makes 16 ounces of drink, approximately the size of a bicycle bottle. bigger nuun has a larger tablet size specifically formatted for ease of use in larger 32-ounce or liter-sized bottles and hydration packs. nuun was the first electrolyte drink ideally suited for use in hydration systems, because its sugar-free formula rinses cleanly and will not fuel the growth of bacteria. In 2008, a tube of bigger nuun is included with the purchase of Deuter hydration packs.

When nuun came to market in 2004, it offered active people a new way to hydrate. nuun’s concept—to separate what you drink to stay hydrated from what you eat for energy-defined a new way to replenish electrolytes in a convenient, easy-to-use form. Simply add a tablet to water, let it dissolve for two minutes, and you have a drink containing calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium—the essential electrolytes that aid hydration.

nuun & company will be sampling all the flavours of nuun and bigger nuun at these upcoming events in April:
April 13 Ford Ironman Arizona Triathlon Phoenix, Arizona
April 17-20 Sea Otter Classic Monterey, California
April 17-20 Boston Marathon Boston, Massachusetts
April 21-27 Tour de Georgia Atlanta, Georgia

KOVARIK UNSTOPPABLE AT FONTANA WINNING IT, RENNIE ON HIS HEELS IN 2ND!

March 31st, 2008 by adam

image029.jpg

Fontana, CA
March 30, 2008

The first round of the National Mountain Bike Series presented by Maxxis was held March 27th-30th in Fontana, California. The event was well attended with the parking lot overflowing in the Southridge Park under the trees, with pleasant weather greeting the racers. The downhill was internationally represented with world cup riders from New Zealand, Australia, Spain and the UK joining the US racers making it quite a competitive event. In the end, the southern hemisphere riders dominated the top five men’s downhill with two Aussie’s and three Kiwi’s on the podium.

Donny Jackson, Southridge Racing promoter, had a nice treat for the downhillers delivering the best Fontana race course of the season. Winding down the neighborhood hill, Jackson added more turns and challenging rock sections to meet up with the “Wall”, a long, flat, vomit inducing pedaling section that, according to Jackson, “The racers either love it or hate it, but always have something to say about it.” Rennie says, “It’s a good course and it’s unique and it’s hard; it’s really a complement to itself. It’s dry and dusty, and the upper sections make you really concentrate to do it properly. Then when you hit the wall you can finally let it go, and arrrggghhh…for 20 seconds you suffer, then right, left, and it’s getting black, then you’re across the line.”

Practice was ruled by Kovarik, and Rennie comments, “It looks like he’s raced here before!” Rennie quickly got his lines dialed and blasted rocky sections in practice to the whoops and hollers of spectators. It looked like it would be a two horse race, Kovarik in his new, white Chain Reaction Cycles kit, and Rennie, the dark horse in his stealthy, black Troy Lee Designs kit. In fact, the two Aussie’s must have been thinking alike as they ran their qualifier with just 1/100th separating them.

image0124.jpg

The finals played out just as it looked it would from observing practice. Kovarik cracked into the ‘teens with a 2:19.6, the only rider to do so. Rennie was on his tail with a 2:22.2, but the experience Kovarik has at Fontana bested his best friend by 2.6 seconds with a decisive win on this physically demanding track. Justin Leov was third with a 2:24.6, followed by teammate Sam Blenkinsop at 2:25.1, and fellow Kiwi, Cameron Cole took fifth with a 2:25.3.

Rennie was satisfied with second place to Kovarik and says this about his run, “I’m pretty tired now. That is a gnarly thing to do, that pedaling, you start to pass out, at least I do! The last five pedal strokes I don’t think I was even pushing on the cranks.” Kovarik agrees, “I started to pass out too, everything starts getting black at the end. I shouldn’t have had a breakfast burrito an hour and a half before my race. When I was done I vomited, but I’ve had training doing the Fontana ‘Vomit Series’ all winter.”

Nigel Page, Chain Reaction Cycles team manager says, “I’m pleased that Chris’s hard work all winter is going to pay off not only here, but for the world cup season. He’s now back on top where he always belongs, so we should have some good results this year. I’d like to thank Chris for all his hard work.”

Donny Jackson was pleased with the spectator turnout, “There were so many people on the side of that mountain like I’ve never seen before!”

In the pro women’s class Melissa Buhl crushed the nearest competitor by 8.3 seconds!! Her strength and fitness is a stand out amongst her peers and shows that her training program is working. Lisa Myklak took second place with Joanna Petterson in third. Claire Buchar raced her new Intense to a 4th place finish and Fionn Griffiths managed a podium position after crashing in her race run.

SANTA CRUZ SYNDICATE ALL-RIDE ACADEMY WITH KIRT VOREIS VISITS FONTANA

Kirt Voreis launched the new Santa Cruz Syndicate All-Ride Academy, a junior development program, here at Fontana with 10 year-old Troy Sladek taking instruction from Kirt. Troy won his downhill race and placed 3rd in his cross country race. Kirt worked with Troy on the downhill course showing him lines that Troy said, “I never would have done that line if Kirt hadn’t shown me. I was surprised. And in my race run I did some of my lines, and some of the lines Kirt showed me. I was happy with my race and I learned new things today.”

Kirt got out for some fun himself with the big boys and broke in his new Santa Cruz V-10 the hard way. He asked himself, “What was I thinking following Rennie?” as he cart wheeled his new steed into the ground. “I saw Rennie bunny-hop into the slab rock section and I wasn’t expecting that, didn’t bunny-hop, and got to the bottom and wadded it up.” Kirt laughed it off to the crowd’s amusement as he picked himself up and rode away.

Kirt will have his All-Ride Academy kids at Sea Otter in just a few weeks, joining up with the Syndicate downhill squad of Steve Peat, Greg Minnaar, Nathan Rennie and Josh Bryceland.

Felt Bicycles signs Mountain Biker Darren Pokoj

March 31st, 2008 by adam

logo12.jpg

Edewecht, Germany (March 28, 2008)-Felt Bicycles is pleased to announce that mountain bike rider Darren Pokoj (AUS) is the newest member of the 2008 Felt Team. The 21-year-old Australian caught a lot of attention during various worldwide contests over the last two years.

A young pro, Darren displayed his enormous potential numerous times last season including a huge presence at the Nissan Qashqai Challenge in Madrid, Spain, while at the same time demonstrating his very personal style. Many say that nobody can do nosedive 360’s - aka: “down under threes” - like he can. Darren began in BMX 12 years ago and later he got into mountain bikes. He became a successful DH and 4X rider, winning various national and international 4X and DH competitions in 2004 and 2005. In 2006 he also focused on freeride and slopestyle competitions. Along the way he won the slopestyle at the Red Bull Trailfox, becoming the “Vienna Air King,” and later placed 5th at the Adidas Slopestyle and 6th at the Red Bull District Ride in Italy - even with a broken ankle!

Darren is not only talented but he has shown he is one of the most versatile riders. Whether he’s riding downhill, dirt, slopestyle, street, park or just freeriding, Darren has a flair and style few can match.

Felt produces a wide range of fat tire bikes for each of these different disciplines and given the company commitment to athletes and performance, it is a perfect fit for both Darren and Felt. Darren joining other new 2008 Felt mountain bike team members Joscha Forstreuter (GER) and Cam Zink (USA).
Right now, Darren is enjoying the down-under summer on the Gold Coast of Australia and beginning in April he will spend most of his time in Europe targeting all the major international contests.

WHISTLER BLACKCOMB TRANSFERS OWNERSHIP OF GRAVITY LOGIC

March 31st, 2008 by adam

logo11.jpg

Gravity Logic Employees Will Assume Ownership and All Assets

WHISTLER, BC, March 28, 2008 - Whistler Blackcomb has made the strategic decision to transfer ownership of Gravity Logic, an internal business operation offering a variety of mountain bike design, development and educational services, to three of Gravity Logic’s original employees.

Effective today, Tom Prochazka, Dave Kelly and Rob Cocquyt will assume ownership of a newly created, independent company under the name Gravity Logic Inc (GLI).

Whistler Blackcomb established Gravity Logic almost two years ago and in that short period of time has worked on more than 20 projects in over a dozen different countries. An annual mountain bike educational symposium called the Gravity Logic Forum was also developed.

“Since its inception, the interest in Gravity Logic has been overwhelming and has met, or exceeded, all of our expectations. It has grown to the point where it can more effectively achieve its original objective of acting as a catalyst to grow and develop the sport of mountain biking by becoming a stand alone company,” says Dave Brownlie, President and COO of Whistler Blackcomb. “We are thrilled to have come to an agreement with Tom, Dave and Rob to make this all happen without missing a beat.”

Whistler Blackcomb has also agreed to a five year contract during which GLI will supply trail design and layout services to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

“Tom, Dave and Rob, have been a key part of what has made the Whistler Mountain Bike Park the most successful lift-accessed mountain bike park in the world. Our agreement with GLI will ensure we are able to continue to tap into the best people in the business and keep our bike park at the forefront by providing the world’s most progressive riding experiences,” Brownlie continued.

Under new ownership GLI will continue to offer design and development services to ski resorts, summer resorts, municipalities and land managers from around the world.

“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to build on the solid foundation that has already been established,” says Tom Prochazka of Gravity Logic Inc.. “Having the chance to run our own business designing and developing progressive, high quality riding experiences is a dream come true for all of us.”

Jeremy Roche, one of Gravity Logic’s original members, has accepted a new position as Whistler Blackcomb’s Summer Business Development Manager which includes overall responsibility for the execution and development of the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festivals in Whistler and Winter Park, Colorado. As a result, he will not be involved in the new company.

Similarly, Rob McSkimming, Whistler Blackcomb’s VP of Business Development and Gravity Logic’s initial Managing Director will no longer have a role in the business.

“Both Jeremy and I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in launching and developing Gravity Logic. The worldwide response has been amazing. I am confident that Tom, Dave and Rob will continue to set the standard for mountain bike park design and development,” says McSkimming. “Even though we will not be directly involved, we still strongly believe that developing more great riding experiences is key to growing the sport.”

Gravity Logic Inc. will continue have its operations based in Whistler. GLI can be contacted through www.whistlergravitylogic.com

MRP launches patented XCG Series of impact guards for cross-country bikes

March 28th, 2008 by adam

logo10.jpg

Building on their integrated guard patent*, MRP will begin shipping a new, innovative series of components designed to protect chainrings and cranks from damage due to the occasional rock or log encounter. The XCG guards consist of a replaceable polycarbonate Skid direct-mounted to a 4mm thick alloy back plate.

“Lots of cross country riders don’t want to give up their big ring in exchange for a crank-mounted bash guard, nor do they want to add a large, heavy bash ring on top of an outer chainring. With an XCG, you can keep the big chainring on and not worry about damaging it on obstacles. The XCG is light weight, and costs a lot less than replacing a high quality 44T ring, so it’s a great accessory for the fast and technically aggressive XC rider or for any rider looking to protect their investment”, says Paul Aieta, VP of Sales and Marketing for MRP.

image0121.jpg

The XCG Triple and XCG Single install easily on any XC frame and add no rotational weight to the drivetrain. OEM deliveries of the XCG Series begin in April, with aftermarket introduction soon following.

XCG Triple
· Protects triple crank outer rings up to 44T
· Raised upper profile catches chain from inboard drops
· Bottom-bracket mount or ISCG
· Weight: 100g
· MSRP $49.95

XCG Single
· Protects chain rings up to 36T
· Great for single-speed setups
· Bottom-bracket mount or ISCG
· Weight: 90g
· MSRP $44.95

image027.jpg

*US Patent #7066856

MRP is a small, rider-owned company based in Grand Junction, Colorado. With countless World Cup and World Championship victories, MRP has been the choice of champions since 1996. MRP’s patented chain guides and patented integrated bash guard technologies put them at the top as the leader in smooth, silent, reliable chain retention and drivetrain protection.

JET 9 Production Update
2008 R.I.P. 9s in Stock NOW
Website Changes
Rigid Forks
Niner Bikes is Hiring!
From the Founders
IMBA Limited Edition m.c.r. 9 frame and Niner Rigid fork
Niner IMBA schemeCongrats to Chris Weber of Vermont! Here is his explanation of the paint scheme:The Panels with the squiggly lines have a story behind them that I am sure IMBA would appreciate.

The Down Tube Panel with Niner written on it would be a trail map of the Kingdom Trails (an awesome VT trail system IMBA worked on). The top tube would have a trail map of a trail IMBA worked on in the Rockies (Ive never been there so I have no idea what trail it would be). Seat Tube Panel would be a California trail that IMBA worked on (youre seeing a pattern I trust…). The Panels on the fork could be a trail in Canada and another in the South (Pisgah???). The Red line illustrates the actual trail on these maps.

Now the idea is to show that IMBA HAS had a HUGE impact on ALL our trails no matter where we are, and why not celebrate the fact that you could be a Hermit singletrack hound in VT, a Hucker in BC, or a BIG mountain rider out west, IMBA looks out for ALL of us and we should in turn support them!

Chris Weber

===================================We will be making some slight modifications to the layout. We are going to have the IMBA logo moved to a more prominent position and the Pedal Damn It will be changed to Join Damn It.

Now to be fair more than one person sent in an entry like this but Chris’ was first and also captures the essence of what we were looking for. So he will be seeing his paint job riding around at the IMBA booth at Sea Otter and will be receiving a free frame and fork for his efforts.

Our thanks to all who entered the contest. We had many cool paint jobs to choose from and entries from all over the world.

These 25 special edition custom painted m.c.r. 9 frames & forks will be available in June.

Pricing will be $1,078.00 for the frame and fork.

Again thanks to all of you for helping us support a great organization like IMBA.

Thanks,
Chris & Steve

JET 9 Production Update
Niner JET 9Okay, so were not going to beat around the bush on this one. The JET 9’s will be delayed again. It’s always something, right?Well, the frames are almost finished, actually, the frames ARE finished and ready to go. Now its a delay in the linkage thats clogging the works. We are really putting everything we have into making the JET 9 not only the best functioning bike we can design, but also the best looking rig that were capable of. In that effort, we were really pushing for a mirror polish finish on the linkage and we were unhappy with the level of mirror we were achieving with standard polishing and clear ano. So, months ago, before production, we started testing chrome plating. This is not the chrome plating from your 1981 Mongoose BMX bike that just flaked off after a month, this chrome plating has been refined and is amazingly thin (about .01mm thickness). It also doesnt come off. We literally dragged the test linkage through the streets to see the effect on the chrome plating, and although it did scratch, it never flaked, no matter how much abuse we hammered into it. We dented, bent, banged and otherwise destroyed the chrome plated test linkage, and it just grinned and kept shinning. It seems that the worst thing you can do to it is touch it, and put your finger prints all over it.Niner crome platingThat being said, we decided to go with this chrome plating for production, and wanted you to get your frames and be totally blown away with and surprised by the mirror finish on the Jet 9 linkage. Well, some things dont go as planned. The plating process is taking longer and becoming more difficult to achieve than we had first expected. We are getting them all done it is just taking time to do it right.

We know youre probably pretty eager to get your hands on the new frames, and were just as miffed about it as you are. Were doing everything in our power to rectify the problem and deliver the Jet 9s with the beautiful linkage we set out to deliver. Again, we know, another delay. We apologize sincerely, we expect to have frames to your local Niner Dealers around April 28th. This is the final stretch, we’re almost there, please hang in there with us.

If the delay is an issue please contact Ryan ryan@ninerbikes.com.

We have had a lot of calls about the compatibility of the FOX F29 and the Jet 9. We did extensive testing of early prototypes of the FOX F29 in both the 80mm and 100mm versions while we were in development. (Thanks FOX!!) We can happily say the F29 will work brilliantly with the Jet 9. We do recommend you use the consumer version with the 44mm offset verses the Gary Fisher OEM version at 51mm. Rock Shox Reba and all other current 80mm-100mm travel 29er forks will work as well.
