Absalon and Peraud Win Gold and Silver at Olympics on Hutchinson Piranha Tires

Absalon

Both Choose Ultralight Tubeless Ready Technology for Victory

Beijing, China - August 27, 2008 - - Orbea Team riders Julien Absalon and Jean-Christophe Peraud both chose Hutchinson Piranha 2.0 Tubeless Ready tires to launch their attack on the World’s best mountain bike racers on the dry, hardpacked and technical course at the third-ever Olympic MTB races at Laoshan, Beijing, China last weekend.

ABSALON SECURES SECOND OLYMPIC GOLD
The tension was visible on the start line. Riders knew that a good start would be essential on the narrow and selective course. From the beginning, Julien and JC positioned themselves in the lead group and paid close attention to their competitors. Absalon launched his first attack early in the second lap to break-up the front group, then relaunched again in the middle of the second lap which formed a group of four, containing two Swiss riders and Peraud. Jean-Christophe set-up his attack at the end of the second lap and settled into his position.

After eight laps of effort, at about eighteen kilometers an hour average, the Hutchinson riders finished one-two on a course that had evolved from way-too-easy at test races earlier in the year, to one of the most technical courses in Elite racing history.

PIRANHA ULTRALIGHT SEMI-SLICK
Both riders chose the Hutchinson Piranha 26 X 2.0 Tubeless Ready tires (at 480 grams) with Fast’Air latex sealant. The Piranha Tubeless Ready tire is the lightest tire of the Hutchinson MTB performance range. The system merges the advantages of tubed tires (extreme lightness) with the enormous advantages of Tubeless (comfort, performance and grip).

TUBELESS READY
Piranha Tubeless Ready tires can be mounted Tubeless using a Hutchinson Fast’Air inflator, or with an inner tube if necessary. It’s a terrain specific high-performance tire that was obviously the best choice for the Olympic course.

Trips for Kids Founding Director Receives Jefferson Award

August 28th, 2008 by Gregg

Marilyn Price’s vision and commitment honored
For Immediate Release

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Aug. 27, 2008 - Trips for Kid’s (TFK) founding director, Marilyn Price, recently received the widely-recognized Jefferson Award for community service for 21 years as the driving force behind the organization.

On the local level, the Jefferson Award spotlights ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward. TFK is a non-profit organization that provides mountain bike outings and environmental education for kids who would not otherwise be exposed to such activities. The organization teaches lessons in personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness through the simple act of having fun.

Through Price’s tireless stewardship, TFK has grown from her original idea in 1988 to a 64-chapter international organization which has served tens of thousands of disadvantaged, young people in the inner-cities. Most participate in mountain bikes rides in nearby parks and wild lands, while others learn bike repair and maintenance through earn-a-bike programs. Hundreds of adult volunteers say they receive as much from TFK experiences as the kids do. The San Francisco Chronicle and the local CBS affiliate station KPIX featured stories about Marilyn’s initial vision for TFK and her long-term dedication to its expansion and its mission.

More information about TFK and its mission can be found at www.tripsforkids.org. More information about the Jefferson Awards, administered by the American Institute for Public Service, a national foundation that honors community service, may be found at its web site www.jeffersonawards.org.

About the Jefferson Awards

Angel Fire’s trails are among the fastest and most technically challenging in North America, a fact the top riders in the world can testify to after the UCI World Cup held here in 2005. This will be an extreme challenge to find out who’s the toughest.”

The Red Bull Burner will start at 9:00am and finish in the dark at 9:00pm. Winners will be determined by total number of laps in the twelve hour period. Riding after dark will require the use of approved front mounted bike lights. Three of Angel Fire’s top bike park downhill trails will be utilized simultaneously for the event. It’s definitely going to be an amazing scene to watch. We hope to mark this event as a do-not-miss end-of-season DH mountain bike tradition for years to come, much like the 24 Hours of Moab has become on the endurance side.”

Alison Sydor and Rocky Mountain Bicycles Raise $35,000.00 Dollars in Auction for Cancer

August 28th, 2008 by Gregg

For Immediate Release
August 27,2008

Alison Sydor

Vancouver B.C. - Rocky Mountain Bicycles donated a custom painted pink road bike to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Cyclist Lance Armstrong made his fifth appearance in the Calgary area on Friday along with Alison Sydor and the very special carbon fibre 2009 Rocky Mountain Solo RSL90.

Their efforts were well rewarded as the custom pink Rocky Mountain road bike raised a whopping $35000 at auction.

Alison Sydor came to the Rocky Mountain Team with the idea a few months ago, and thanks to the help of Patrick Leclerc and the graphics department her idea came to fruition.

Alison’s former coach and mentor Karen Strong celebrated a year of being cancer-free by cycling with four of her protégés. Karen rode with four “girls” she once coached - Alison Sydor, Kelly Anne Erdman, Maria Hawkins and Sara Neil - all of whom have rallied around her since she was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in June 2007

“It’s not often in your life that you will meet someone who will do everything to help you do your best,” says Sydor, who is originally from Alberta but now lives in Vancouver.

Rocky Mountain Bicycles would like to congratulate everyone involved in the event.

Three Day Trips in the Chilcotins - Aug 2 - 4 2008

Photos by Sharon Bader, Lee Lau or Chris Kelly. Words by Sharon Bader. All Rights Reserved

Well. We’re back. Despite me wanting to take a break from the Chilcotins it tends to keep drawing you back. This time we’ve come with more people who have become addicted to the alpine - Dave and Trevor. Two of our skiing buddies from Lillooet (Kevin and Chris) joined us as well! Initially we were going to camp at Spruce Lake Wilderness Adventure’s guest ranch but since there was a bear in the area ripping apart their fridges we figured it would be better to camp in a more populated area. Fortunately there was still space in the Freiburg Forest Service Campground which was free and right by the lake! So that is were we camped for these three rides. After about a 30 minute drive from the campground we park at the access to Taylor Basin and start to climb. If you are unsure where this area is in BC click here. More information and links are at the bottom of this report if you want more information.

WTB RIDERS OUT FOR BLOOD AT SSWC

August 27th, 2008 by adam

image0152.jpg

image0218.jpg

Mark Weir, Rachel Lloyd, Jason Moeschler. These WTB-riders aren’t single speeders. They don’t even own single speeds. But when the Single Speed World Championships came to Napa, California—Team WTB’s home turf—Weir, Moeschler and Lloyd converted their everyday bikes into one speeds and set their sights on winning.

When the dust settled, the WTB team achieved nearly all of its goals. WTB/Proman rider Rachel Lloyd destroyed the women’s field, easily taking the win. Weir crossed the line seconds after WTB-sponsored team Giant rider Carl Decker. Moeschler placed fifth.

More than 400 racers descended on Napa’s Skyline Park for the event. The race started with a lemans-style run to the bikes and three laps on a rugged course that included steep climbs and steeper descents. Crazy costumes, wild antics and immense heckling were ever present. Both Lloyd and Decker both won SSWC tattoos. Weir and Moeschler stood out as much as riders clad in elaborate costumes, as both riders chose to ride “all mountain” suspension bikes for the occasion. Weir rode a six-inch travel Santa Cruz Nomad and Moeschler raced a Blur LT.
