Mark Weir to Join World’s Best Riders in Kenya

October 31st, 2008 by adam

Wilderness Trail Bikes, Inc., a global leader in bicycle components, is proud to be send its PR manager and pro athlete Mark Weir to the Fabien Barel invitational, Urge Kenya

Mark Weir is joining a select group of the world’s best mountain bikers in a race down Mt. Kenya this February. The event, named Urge Kenya, is being organized by two-time downhill world champion Fabien Barel and Fred Glo of Tribe Sports Group. Only ten athletes will be racing this spectacular, ultra-endurance downhill event and all proceeds will be donated to ACORD, an international alliance working to promote social justice throughout Africa.

So far, the roster of invited riders includes Mark Weir, Brian Lopes, Fabien Barel, Wade Simmons, Ritchey Schley, Steve Peat, Julien Absalon and Anne Caroline Chausson, among others. The riders will spend three full days trekking to the 16,355-foot summit of Lenana Peak. Although each competitor will be assigned a Swahili guide, the riders must carry their own bikes. The hike up the mountain will serve as course inspection and the start order will be determined by each rider’s knowledge of the Swahili language, encouraging interaction between riders and guides throughout the trek. The voyage up Mt. Kenya will undoubtedly be a life-changing bonding experience for the group. The trip down will be a flat-out battle between the world’s best mountain bike pilots across a half-dozen ecological zones, including bamboo forests and Afro-Alpine chaparral. The

Fabien Barel and Fred Glo are visiting the area right now organizing the event and Mark Weir is anxiously awaiting his departure in late January. “It will be a once in a lifetime trip,” said Weir. “I just hope I can breathe at 16,000 feet.” Weir also stated that he’d be riding with a paper bag over his head to prepare for the thin air. In a more serious tone, Weir stated that, “this is an incredible opportunity to use our sport to help people that are less fortunate.” group will speed through the impressive landscape and finish in less than three hours.

The Complete Book of Cyclocross, Skill Training and Racing

Colorado Springs, Colorado

NEW Cyclocross Skills Book Now Available

Several years ago Scott Mares was frustrated with the only book on the market and started to put together drills and skills for cyclocross. Scott has been running the ACA cyclocross camps for 9 years with rider attendance from 60 up to 140 at a time. The camps have help produce more than a dozen national champions and even a Silver at the
Jr. worlds championships.

The name of the book is “The Complete Book of Cyclocross, Skill Training and Racing”. This book is available at www.cx-book.com October 17th this year. The book will retail for $20.00. The web site is full of information about the book and the author including a sample chapter from the book.

About the book

The book addresses different techniques of skill training and racing for
cyclocross. The book will also address different cross drills to promote skill and intervals specific to cyclocross. The book has over 200 detail pictures with specific arrows showing where to place your hands. The book also shows what NOT to do and why you should not do it.

Detailed descriptions will be given on these drills that have never been published before. The book explains each drill in a way that is easy to understand and implement.

Racing tactics and equipment are a big section in this book. In the racing section, I talk about different tactics and explain when and when not to apply them.

In addition, the book contains a few chapters on growing the sport. The ACA has been very successful on growing Junior Cyclocross through their camps and Mud Skipper program. The book gives detailed guidance on how to create and run your own cyclocross camp and junior cyclocross program.

Coming! The Perfect Bike Shop in the Middle of Cycling Paradise

October 30th, 2008 by adam

Cyclists from Southern California and all over the world visit the Palos Verdes Peninsula area to enjoy the great roads and trails and the amazing ocean views. PV Bicycle Center now adds another great reason to visit this part of LA’s South Bay.

Specialized Racing Bikes on Display at PV Bicycle Center

Oct 30, 2008 – The most difficult part of riding a bicycle in the Palos Verdes Peninsula is staying on the road. Not because the roads are poorly paved. They are beautifully groomed and maintained. Not because of irate motorists who don’t want to share with those who are motor-free. PV residents are well known as being at peace with runners, cyclists, and horseback riders. And not even because of the hilly, winding terrain, since most of the roads are wide and well banked. The difficulty comes because your are distracted by the unparalleled vistas and spectacular seaside panoramas, not to mention some of Southern California’s most amazing homes.

Now, adding to this idilic bicycle world is the newest Specialized Concept Store in the US, PV Bicycle Center. Into this extraordinary community comes a cycling store so beyond the ordinary that it is the perfect fit for its environment. The careful design and plan of this retail jewel could only have been accomplished by an artist. In this case a musician who could carefully craft a melody into the chords and rhythms of the concerto that was already in place. Enter Steve Bowen, stage left.

Until just a few short years ago, Steve Bowen was making his living on and off Broadway as a conductor, arranger, and editor of music ranging from rock to Gershwin, from Dixieland to Musical Theatre. His next debut will be bringing his off Broadway bike shop to the big time in the Peninsula Shopping Center.

“Our goal is nothing less than to have the very best bike shop with the best customer experience in all of Southern California,” Steve tells his staff for the umpteenth time. And PV BIcycle Center’s owners and crew have gone all out to meet that goal. Teaming with the cycling powerhouse Specialized Bicycle Company, no expense has been spared in creating this new venue. From state-of-the-art audio and video equipment to provide ambiance and information to the “best fitting facility in Southern California,” the store is beyond amazing.

When you enter the store you can’t help but be struck by the elegance and sophistication designed in by Steve and Specialized. “One of our main goals,” explains Steve, “is to make this facility as inviting to women as it is to men.” The colors and stylistic touches feel more like Nordtroms than a traditional male-oriented bike shop. But there remain plenty of elements to attract the testosterone crowd.

When you drop by, pay special attention to the ceiling treatment. See if you can spot evidence of a Grand Piano in the sky. Steve says it wasn’t intentional. Either way, it says everything about this new cycling waystop in the middle of bicycle paradise.

For more information about the grand opening the weekend of November 21-23 or directions on how to find this new cycling treasure, check out the website at http://pvbike.com

National Mountain Bike Oktoberfest: Racing and Riding for kids from 2 to 52

October 29th, 2008 by adam

Charlotte, NC – First-time racers, weekend warriors and pro-racers alike started their days early for National Mountain Bike Oktoberfest, held October 24-26, 2008. While volunteers from Cowbell Challenge Inc. finished checking and marking the courses At Fisher Farm Park in Davidson, NC, and setting up to check in the racers, seasoned racers began their pre-rides and first-time racers checked out the course and asked tons of questions. Spectators and support crews found some time to check out the new models from Cannondale, Specialized and Trek, and kids from 2 to 11 got their first taste of bike racing.

Friday dawned grey and chilly, but the threat of rain didn’t stop the competitors for the Friday NiteRider Short Track Race. 11 racers took to the course for just over 30 minutes of tight racing through the woods. Jeremiah Bishop (Trek/VW) took top honors with 17 laps in 31:57.1, followed by Diego (Bicycle Sport) with 17 laps in 32.10.9 and Nat Ross (Gary Fisher/Subaru) with 17 laps in 32.47.3.

Saturday morning brought a steady downpour before dawn, but the rain disappeared by the time the children took the field for Kids Kompetitions, sponsored by Cool Breeze Cyclery. “It is so much fun watching these kids hopping on their bikes and just getting out to ride for the sheer joy of it,” said Taylor Sullivan, Oktoberfest Race Director. Toddlers competed in a short race with running bikes provided by Strider. Cool Breeze staff officiated and presented the children with medals and special prizes.

The featured event, the Oktoberfest 8-hour Endurance race kicked off at noon, with an impressive starting lineup that included Oktoberfest partner Tinker Juarez (Monavie/Cannondale), Jeremiah Bishop (Trek/VW), Nat Ross (Gary Fisher/Subaru), Harlan Price (FT / IF pb Lionette’s), and Ernesto Marenchin (Speedgoat.com), balanced by a number of bikers competing in their very first endurance race. From the word “GO” a really tight race was on, and Nat Ross, hitting the course for the ODI, “Grip and Rip” whole shot win, also grabbed all five of the Specialized “King of the Mountain” climbs in the first lap. Ross, Price, Juarez, Marenchin and Bishop stayed close in the early laps, and after a few more hours Bishop and Price were riding each other’s wheels, trading first and second for the rest of the day. As course faded into darkness and the hours counted down to the final lap, a mere 8 seconds separated the Bishop and Price. At the end, Bishop crossed the line just 12 seconds ahead of Harlan Price. The top five finishes are:

1. Jeremiah Bishop (Trek/VW) 14 laps

2. Harlan Price (FT / IF pb Lionette’s) 14 laps

3. Tinker Juarez (MonaVie Cannondale) 13 laps

4. Ernesto Marenchin (Speedgoat.com) 13 laps

5. Nat Ross (Gary Fisher/Subaru) 12 laps

In the women’s race, Pua Sawicki (Team Mata) looked to be impossible to beat—with some of the top finishes of the year before coming out to Oktoberfest. At the start Pua‘s race pace matched the men’s and she looked ready to go for the whole shot over the men. In fact, she was the female winner of the ODI “Grip and Rip” first female on the course, and the Specialized “Queen of the Mountain”. Her husband Ron, reported that the course was really slippery on the first lap due to all the late night rain and earlier morning mist, and Pua fell in the single track section of the course. She came back strong and fast, finishing well ahead of the rest of the women’s field and most of the men’s field. Pua’s family, coming in from Hawaii, was there cheering her on as for the first time they watched her compete in mountain biking. Denelle Grant (Bike Factory Racing) and Blakely Sapsford (Guy’s Racing) rounded out the top three in the women’s field.

The deep blue skies North Carolina is famous for returned bright and early on Sunday, as the racers prepared for Time Trials. Racers set off in one minute intervals to cover four miles of existing, flowing single track in the fastest time possible. The results follow:

Open - Men

1 Jafer Beizer (Kudzu.com U23) Conyers, GA 17:46.4

5 Daniel Huey Cornelius, NC 21:55.7

6 Daniel Green Cornelius, NC 23:54.2

Masters - Men

1 Jack Crouch (Bicycle Sport) Charlotte, NC 19:22.2

The final event of the inaugural National Mountain Bike Oktoberfest was known as the “Beast” for good reason… three-quarters of a mile of running, biking, and obstacles. The modified cyclocross style race resembled “old-fashioned” cyclo-cross, challenging the skills of experienced and newbie riders alike as they raced for 30 minutes plus 1 lap. The results follow:

Masters - Men

1 Jack Crouch (Bicycle Sport) Charlotte, NC

2 Perry Lee (Bicycle Sport) Charlotte, NC

3 Mike Metz Matthews, NC

4 Randy Nance Cornelius, NC

Open - Men

1 Michael Nixon (SoBe Cannondale) Ft. Lauderdale, FL

“My hat is off to the volunteers and organizers of National Mountain Bike Oktoberfest,” said David “Tinker” Juarez, former Olympian and Mountain Bike Hall of Famer and partner for the inaugural event. “It was a huge effort that came together quickly, and as a racer, I can say it was a blast to compete in.”

Sponsors for National Mountain Bike Oktoberfest currently include The Right Words, Organic Systems, LLC, NiteRider Lighting Systems, Cool Breeze Cyclery, Cannondale Bicycles, Kenda Tires, MonaVieCannondale.com, ODI Grips, Specialized Bicycles, Anse Chastanet Resort in St. Lucia iBert Safe-T- Seats, Strider Running Bikes, Summit Coffee, Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine, Bicycle Sport, Tifosi Eyewear, The Cyclepath, Clif Bar, Hammer Nutrition, ByeKyle, and Cane Creek.

Truvativ HammerSchmidt Pro Review

October 29th, 2008 by sicklines.com

(this article originally posted at and courtesy of www.sicklines.com)

Truvativ HammerSchmit (AM)

It’s not every day that you get to ride something as unique as the Truvativ HammerSchmidt. What Truvativ has designed, a planetary gear system, is impressive to say the least.

What HammerSchmidt does on the surface is replace a double ring setup with a single ring one that offers the same gear range, but there are many more benefits to it. Read more inside.

While the idea isn’t new to the transmission world, it is impressive to see the idea implemented in a crankset to effectively replace not only the double ring setup, but also acts as a bashguard and a chainguide all in one. Before we delve into the details of the ride here is a run down of the two versions available for after market purchasing.

HammerSchmidt will come in two flavors, an AM and a FR Version.

All Mountain (AM)

  • Crank arm lengths are 170 and 175mm
  • Tungesten Grey finished arms made from AL 7050 TV
  • Versions for 68, 73, 83mm bottom bracket sizes
  • Gearing equivalent to a 22t/36t or 24t/38t
  • 15mm crank bolt

michal.prokop 09 Calendar

October 27th, 2008 by Gregg

While Michal Prokop is taking rest after successful surgery of his wrist injured during pre-Olympic qualification, together with photographer Rob Trnka and graphic designer Jan Mocnak they finalized Michal’s latest project… We’d like to introduce the unique calendar called michal.prokop09!

Tons of iron lifted in a fitness centre, kilometers on roads, days on trips, training plans, massages… enough for a talented sportsman to become successful, but too little to become a real professional. It does not depend on how his sport is big, but it depends on what all is he willing to do not to remain only a local hero…

Michal Prokop managed to step out of shadow of sports giants even before the flames went up over the Beijing. The life on pedals is his hobby and livelihood as well. Today, the twenty-seven-year King of the Czech cycling of 2006 and the factory rider of Author acquired all titles on his mountain bike and he even defended them again. Also, in 2006, only several months after a severe injury, he initiated the Czech national team of the track world championship on oval… As the double World and European champion and the double winner of the World Cup in fourcross, he has again found another great challenge in his highly successful carrier - nothing smaller than the BMX premiere at the Summer Olympic Games 2008 in the Chinese Beijing. He flies tens thousand miles in plane and spends hundreds of hours in car; he does not spent a lot of time at home.

One year of life of the most successful Czech biker and BMX rider was caught by the photographer Rob Trnka in the series of twelve unique pictures of the calendar michal.prokop09. Raw, black & white photos, sensitively processed by the graphic designer Jan Mocnak, offer neither attractive sceneries nor insane tricks. Least of all, they include egoistical posturing or nostalgic looking back to the Olympic year. It was not intended to amaze by a list of exotic destinations. Month by month, we can watch Michal at his training, ice skating race, care for his racing machine or his own body, behind handlebars, or on the road…

Michal Prokop comes with a project which does not want to astonish and that’s why it is worth attention. The outcome from sale together with the profit from auction of replica of the Michal’s Olympic Author machine is determined for the Fund of sportsmen at the Foundation of Tereza Maxova. The calendar in the A2 format will have its premiere at the Sport Life exhibition in Brno, where the mentioned auction shall take place.

WIENS AND ARMSTRONG BATTLE AT LEADVILLE 100

The Leadville 100 endurance mountain bike saw a battle between two very different Legends of cycling. Dave Wiens, the Topeak Ergon racer lined up for the race which he had already won 5 times in a row. Next to him was the new challenger – none other than the seven times Tour de France Champion Lance Armstrong. Neither of them was going to take it easy! With a record finishing time of 6:45:45 the victory went to the 43 year old Wiens. He had nearly 2 minutes lead on Armstrong. The new record beat his own previous record by nearly 13 minutes, putting a cherry on the top of the win for Wiens. “It was great to have Lance here to give us such a great race today, but I wont kid myself, he isn’t the same rider now that he was when he won the Tours. I don’t put myself in that league” the modest and down to earth Wiens said of the ride to his sixth win.

The course was 100 miles long and demanded everything of the riders. For Armstrong it was his first competitive race since his retirement following the 2005 Tour de France. His venture into the knobbly world wasn’t out of the blue, he had been extensively training in nearby Aspen, acclimatising to the altitude for two weeks. However, with only 20km to go, he turned to Wiens and told him “that’s it, I’m done. Go.” Despite Wien’s encouragement Armstrong dropped back and the final gap formed. A return to the race next year though was not ruled out.

For a blow-by-blow recap of the race check out the provided video link below! more >>
