Famous Moab Trails Put at Risk by Drilling Leases

IMBA urges mountain bikers to help preserve some of Moab’s most famous trails. A new Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plan would lease land parcels for oil and gas extraction near iconic trails such as Porcupine Rim, Amasa Back, Barlett Wash and Tusher Canyon, turning sections of trail into heavily used access roads. IMBA respects the need for domestic energy production, but believes Moab is better served by protecting its world-class recreational assets.

If these parcels are leased and put into production, the BLM will be required to provide adequate access in the form of roads capable of accommodating trucks and other large vehicles. Parts of these roads would be located on or near some of Moab’s most famous mountain biking trails.

IMBA believes the BLM should balance the need for energy production with the benefits of recreation and tourism. Please tell BLM officials to protect mountain biking and Moab’s sustainable recreation economy by withdrawing parcels near Porcupine Rim, Amasa Back, Barlett Wash and Tusher Canyon. The deadline for comments is Dec. 3.

Re: December 19, 2008 Lease Parcels: 180, 181,182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 196, 197 200, 217, 218, 219, 221, 222, 223, 224, and 225

Pursuant to 43 C.F.R. 3120.1-3, please accept this letter of protest regarding the proposed lease sale of the above noted parcels. I respectfully request that these parcels be withdrawn from the December 19, 2008 sale, for the following reasons:

I am a resident of ____________, ________. I have been to Moab/am planning to visit Moab, and have specific concerns about BLM’s upcoming oil and gas lease sale in Utah.

Moab’s Recreation Economy Part A: I understand that the recently released Moab Resource Management Plan (RMP) includes specific reference to the Colorado Riverway Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) which includes both the Porcupine Rim Trail and the Amasa Back Trail. The existence of this SRMA requires that the following parcels be defered as access to these parcels will violate the Visual Resource Management Objectives set forth in the RMP. Further, the loss of these two trails would greatly reduce my desire to visit Moab. Parcel numbers: 200, 217, 218, 219, 221, and 223

Moab’s Recreation Economy Part B: Tusher Canyon and Barlett Wash are both designated Mountain Bike Areas within the BLM Resource Management Plan and are closed to motorized travel except on designated routes. Oil and gas activity in this area will greatly detract from the desirability of these trails. The RMP does not include a site-specific analysis that addresses the impacts of oil and gas development included in these lease sale parcels. The BLM must conduct site-specific analysis before making these areas available for oil and gas leasing. Parcel numbers: 180, 181,182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 196, and 197

Moab Water Quality: I am concerned about the health and safety of both residents and visitors to Moab if drilling is allowed within the Moab Aquifer. The RMP specifically states that there will be no exceptions for oil and gas development within an aquifer. Parcel numbers: 224, 225

Parcels contiguous to Arches National Park: Due to the physical constraints of Moab’s unique topography the only access to these parcels would be through Arches National Park. Therefore, I request that these parcels be deferred. Parcel numbers: 217, 218

BLM acknowledges that the potential for oil and gas production is low in these areas, so why allow permanent scars of access roads and development to tarnish the landscape that provide a high quality of life to residents of Grand County and that visitors from around the world come to enjoy? A large portion of the Moab economy will be at risk if these parcels are not deferred. The BLM has discretionary authority to approve or disapprove mineral leasing of public lands. We request that the above listed parcels be withdrawn from the December 19, 2008, lease sale, and that these parcels not be re-offered in future lease sales.

Cyclist Launches Campaign to Help Give Wheels to Those Who Walk

Ultra Rob launches a charity campaign to help provide wheels of hope to those who walk, donating 10% of his website earnings to World Bicycle Relief.

Colorado Springs, CO (November 24, 2008) – Imagine having to deliver a life-saving message, crucial medicine or care for the sick in a nation – and having no way to do so but your own two feet.

Rob Lucas, otherwise known as Ultra Rob, knows just how much difference a bicycle can make. He’s beginning a charity campaign on November 24 and donating 10% of earnings from his website, http://www.ultrarob.com, to World Bicycle Relief until the campaign ends on Christmas Day. With his website listing over 200,000 cycling and outdoor gear products from over 60 online stores, Rob is confident his contribution to the World Bicycle Relief is going to make a big difference.

World Bicycle Relief has distributed nearly 50,000 bicycles since the initiative’s inception in 2005. That’s a lot of wheels supporting healthcare, education and economic development opportunities in poverty relief and disaster assistance situations. The organization has some big names backing its efforts, too, such as Johan Bruyneel, the mastermind behind 8 of the last 9 Tour de France victories, who sits on the Board of Directors.

Ultra Rob hopes to create a positive impact for bicycle recipients. He hopes to tap into the generosity of a current World Bicycle Relief supporter who will match donations dollar for dollar through the end of the year. “The money I raise will go farther,” Ultra Rob points out. “One bicycle costs only $134. It won’t take much to raise funds, and every dollar adds up to make a big difference. I’m really excited about this campaign and giving the gift of a better life to these people.”

Bicycles have impacted Ultra Rob’s life too. His love of cycling goes back a long, long way. “I’ve been competing for nearly 20 years. I’ve participated in the world’s toughest cycling event, riding 2,000 miles in eight days,” he notes. “I had the best equipment. There are people in the world who need to deliver life-saving medicine or care for the sick, and they don’t even have the most basic equipment to get where they need to be.”

ERGON:
What originally turned you on to, or how did you first hear about Ergon products?

OTE:
Bike Week 2006; on the rim of the Grand Canyon, PR guru Steve Boehmke asked if I would like to try these “strange looking” grips? He didn’t hesitate to actually put them on my bike as I waited to ride. I remember that I asked for my old grips as I was sure that I would take them off as soon as I had ridden them for a while… They have never come off and are still on that bicycle as well as on every bike I ride now.

ERGON:
What Ergon products do you stock? What tends to be the “hot” Ergon product for riding in the Fruita area?

OTE:
The grip that I started with remains our best seller; the basic flared grip in the large size (GP1). But the more traditional grip (GE1) is coming on strong and is my most common grip on my bigger travel bikes that I ride. We are also seeing the interest in the hydration systems (BD1 & BD2) growing rapidly.

ERGON:
You mentioned that customers that come into Fruita and rent mountain bikes at OTE request Ergon grips on their bikes. Is this true!? Are you now including Ergon grips on your rental fleet?

OTE:
The experience that led me to embrace the Ergon product is the base for the idea of putting them “in the hands” of other people who might think the idea is a little “strange” but as soon as they ride them they will easily become customers and advocates for the product. It allows us to help with Ergons Sales, our shop sales and the over all “Over the Edge Experience” that we are famous for providing. We want to be known as a shop that does more than just sell “stuff”; we are in business to enhance a persons life experience via their time on a bike and in our shop.

ERGON:
What is the feedback from riders on Ergon product? Any ride changing experiences?

OTE:
As I write this I am having a discussion with Fabian; a friend and BMC rep here in Switzerland. As he said “just put on an Ergon pack and its amazing”. This is the same story that I told with the grips; what Ergon is becoming know for is your ability to address simple cyclist needs in an effective yet simple way that creates a trust in Ergon’s approach to design and it’s perfect match with the riding experience. “Experience”; maybe that’s where Ergon and Over the Edge align so perfectly, providing a product that enhances a cyclists experience.

ERGON:
Fruita is one of the top ride destinations in the USA. Just because it is November, it does not mean the riding is slowing. Any tips for those heading your way in the coming months?

OTE:
The riding season in Fruita can go all year around with the awareness of this rule; when there is mud we do NOT ride. It is nearly impossible to do so at all and is certainly not possible to do without wrecking the trails and your bike and your “experience”. So always check in with us via website or even a phone call and we’ll tell you when things are wet and/or melting off. Thats when we all ride in Moab, sand is sometimes a good thing.

HANS REY: BROKEN BONES, THE GIFT OF MOBILITY, AND CITIZENSHIP

Ergon:
Heard that you had some pretty big news in the month of October. Care to share the details?

Hans:
Many big news this year, besides getting married last week to my beautiful soulmate Carmen, I have also received my US citizenship in October, and was able to vote at the recent elections.

Ergon:
The sport is very cyclic (pardon the pun!). Is it coming around stronger again in the US? Anything you feel making a difference?

Hans:
I think cycling is constant. Certain aspects come and go, but since there are so many benefits for riding a bike it will always be strong. The financial crisis, oil prices, and environmental issues we are facing currently only helps more people to discover some of those benefits.

Ergon:
The new GT looks very good, whose leading the charge at GT?

Hans:
Yes, I”m very happy and proud of the new GT line up. GT has gone through some major changes since the death of co-founder Richard Long in 1996, the current owners have worked hard to bring the brand back, its a team effort, everybody contributes their part and the bikes speak for themselves, if not, one just has to try one.

Ergon:
Do you feel the big bike companies are doing a very good job in bringing new riders, particularly kids into our sport??

Hans:
I think the bike companies are doing their part fairly good, I wouldn’t say they are doing a great job - it could be done so much bigger and cooler. One can not forget their is only so much a bike company can do, those companies are not as big and powerful than some might think. Its all good.

Ergon:
2008 did not start off exactly how you would have liked. Shattering bones in your leg and foot was your first major injury in a lifetime of taking chances…what have you learned about yourself and your body?

Hans:
Well you can say so, luckily I did get a big trip to Tanzania in, before I had a crash on my hometown downhill course in Laguna Beach. I had a very complicated pileon fracture on my left leg. It took almost 4 month to get back in the dirt and it might never be the same again. I got lots of metal in my leg, I still feel some stiffness and numbness from the nerve damage. The good news is, when I’m on my bike I feel and ride almost normal, but off the bike I feel it a bit more, especially when hiking up hills. One sure doesn’t heal as easy and fast with age, I’m glad I didn’t have to go through this injury earlier in my career. I also learned that it doesn’t take much to do much damage.

Ergon:
Along with riding, you have been heavily involved with your organization Wheels4Life. For those who are not aware of Wheels4Life, can you provide a quick run down of the benefits it provides to Third World countries.

Hans:
Wheels 4 Life (Wheels4Life) is a non profit charity that provides bicycles to people in Third World countries in need of transportation. Transportation is often unavailable or unaffordable in those places; having the gift of mobility can make all the different in a persons and their families life. The folks at Ergon have experienced the impact of this first hand by their involvement and support of W4L and our current film project in Tanzania.

Ergon:
This is your first year using Ergon products. Is there any one product that stands out and has enhanced your riding experience? How has it effected your riding style?

Hans:
On my adventure trips I have to often carry heavy loads in my backpack, that combined with riding technical demanding trails can be challenging and dangerous. The load distribution feels much better in those situations, the pack on my back feels actually lighter than it is, thanks to the flink link and the unique frame design.

Ergon:
Without a doubt, you have ridden in some of the most exotic places on the planet. If you could recommend one place that every mountain bike rider must ride during their lifetime, where would it be an why?

Hans:
It seems like the Alps have MOUNTAIN biking written all over them, I’ve been spending a lot of time in the Italian village of Livigno, its a mountain bike “el dorado” with lots of flowy trails.

Ergon:
Any big adventures or trips planned for 2009? Are you still climbing the big volcano in the Phillipines? Any worries about the ankle on these epic journeys?

Hans:
I have several trips in my plans, I’m not sure if all of them will work out, due to many factors from weather, permits, political situation, etc. I would still like to climb Mount Mayon in the Philippines, if its not spitting lava at the time. I’m also planning a trip with my friend and mentor Rick Ridgeway to Patagonia. We will also finish up our W4L movie project in Tanzania and I want to build the first official Flow Country Trail in Livigno. I will try to plan trips with less hiking sections due to my leg, its more fun on top of the bike anyways.

Giant, Race Face and partners build the sweetest kid’s bike ever.

VANCOUVER - November 21st, 2008 - Most 5 year old kids dream of riding a bike – it’s the first real taste of freedom.  Typically the bike doesn’t matter, as long as it has two wheels and can handle dropping a curb or two. But Riley is no regular 5 year old. This kid dreamed big - and sometimes when you go big, it really pays off.

Riley got on the horn and made a few calls to some bike industry guys he knew.  A few months later – voila! Riley had a full on custom dream machine with a roster of one-off parts that aren’t even available to fully sponsored riders, never mind a 5 year old ripper from California!

The whole project was almost two years in the making but the bulk of the work was done in about three months. The bike started with a stock Giant 20 inch MTX frame – a tight little ride but no disc tabs. This meant drilling and tapping the MTX to accept custom machined disc tabs.

The biggest challenge was finding a fork that could be set up for 20 inch wheels, getting the axle to crown height right but still be super plush. The guys at Marzocchi stepped up and created a one of a kind, custom Shiver. Everything about this Shiver had been re-worked, cut and machined to fit the bill. They had to get the ride height correct, as well as set it up for Riley, a 40lb rider at best. These guys thought of everything, from the custom decals to the exclusive titanium hardware. Did we mention the word custom yet?

From there this kid’s 2 wheeled Caddy picked up some serious momentum.  Hayes produced a killer set of Stroker Grams complete with composite levers and Ti parts – 160mm rotor on the front and 140mm on the back. MRP donated a composite Chainguide and Crank Brothers provided a headset. Kenda threw down a set of 20 inch Small Block 8’s and shifting duties are handled courtesy of an XTR light action trigger and an XT long cage rear derailleur (which has since been swapped out for a short cage version). A Dura-Ace road cassette gives Riley a nice 9 speed spread mated to a DT 370 rear hub. DT Swiss also provided a DT 440 front hub, all laced up to disc specific Alienation BMX rims.

Not to be outdone, Race Face rounded things out with a RIDE O degree offset seat post chopped to a svelte 3 inches, a D2 35mm 0 degree rise stem and of course, the piece du résistance, a completely re-engineered set of Atlas FR cranks. These cranks had to undergo a full on modification. They were carefully scaled down to retain the signature sweeps and machine cuts of the full size versions, yet still had to maintain all load bearing qualities in structural areas. Gently tapering the crank to its final 140mm length was a feat of engineering prowess, Race Face staffers’ spare time, and possibly a six pack thrown in for good measure.

The end result?  Let’s just say this may be the most dialled groms bike ever made. So if you’re in California and you see a 5 year old pulling a moto whip on a sweet Giant ride, it’s a good bet its Riley. He’ll be the kid with the bike all his bros (and bros parents) are drooling over.

Help Save Kids From Boredom and Protect the Future of Mountain Biking With High School Cycling Programs

Fullerton, CA - November 25, 2008 - - If you’re in Southern California this Friday after Thanksgiving, come burn your Turkey off for a good cause at the Fifth Annual Tour de Tryptophan/24 Hours of the Fullerton Loop.

Presented by no one, this fund-raiser commences at noon on Friday and finishes at noon on Saturday. As it is a fun ride with no rules, you can start or finish at any time. Do one lap, go home for the evening and do another in the morning. Or ride your brains out for 24 Hours. Seventeen laps seems to be the reigning record.

YOU MIGHT GET A T-SHIRT

The Fullerton Loop is an 11-mile network of suburban trails that pass through city parks, horse trails, hidden pathways and creekside wilderness. Originally pieced together by Richard Cunningham of Mantis Bikes and Mountain Bike Action fame in 1983, hundreds of people ride and train on the famed loop every week. This 24 Hour event was conceived as a celebration of the Loop, an excuse to burn off Thanksgiving dinner, and an opportunity to support a good cause.

This year’s proceeds will benefit the SoCal High School Cycling League, which will bring cycling to Southern California High Schools in 2009. Former beneficiaries of the Tour de Tryp have included the Tara Llanes Recovery Fund, CHOC Hospitals, and various other charities. The SoCal High School Cycling League is not even aware that they are the recipient of upcoming proceeds, so therefore are responsible in no way for this event.

Community Participation Encouraged

FOX Racing Shox - Warning against Fork modifications

To all FOX Racing Shox Users and Customers:

WARNING

It has come to the attention of FOX Racing Shox that certain individuals and / or entities are modifying FOX forks to accommodate mountain bike wheel sizes other than those having 26 inch nominal diameter. One such modification includes removing material from the lower leg cross bridge in order to fit a 29 inch tire in the fork. Such modification will ultimately separate the lower fork legs at the cross bridge (i.e. the weakened cross bridge will fracture) and may cause bicycle instability and crash that result in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

DO NOT MODIFY OR MISAPPLY FOX FORKS

NEVER REMOVE MATERIAL from any portion of a FOX fork. USE ONLY 26 INCH WHEELS with FOX 32*, 36 and 40 bicycle suspension forks. Those FOX forks are designed and tested for use ONLY with 26 inch Mountain Bike wheels / tires. Use of FOX forks with any wheel other than 26 inches and/or alteration or modification of any FOX fork will subject the FOX fork to loads and forces it has not been designed or certified to meet and will void all warranties. The FOX 32*, 36 and 40 models meet CEN and ASTM testing standards ONLY when used with 26 inch wheels / tires and are not recommended or approved by FOX Factory, Inc. for use with wheels larger or smaller than 26 inches, either as original equipment or aftermarket.

DO NOT RIDE ON MODIFIED OR MISAPPLIED FOX FORKS

Proper forks are critical to proper bicycle handling and stability. Improper function or failure of a bicycle fork while riding can cause a bicycle to become uncontrollable and result in a crash. Use of FOX 32*, 36 or 40 forks with wheels larger or smaller than 26 inches, or any other modification, may cause crashes that result in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. Never ride a bicycle that is, or appears to be, fitted with a FOX 32*, 36 or 40 fork that has been modified and / or fitted with any wheel larger or smaller in nominal diameter than 26 inches.

* DO USE THE RIGHT FORK FOR THE JOB

For those of you who want to ride on 29 inch front wheels with suspension, FOX offers the 32 F29 fork designed specifically for 29 inch wheels. The F29 is available in 80mm, 100mm or 120mm travel configurations and is ideal for tall wheel applications. The F29 is the only FOX fork available for use with 29 inch wheels and is clearly labeled “F29” on the right leg. The F29 should be used only with 29 inch wheels. As with all FOX forks, do not modify or misapply, or ride on improperly applied or modified FOX F29 forks.

DO CONTACT FOX

Do not modify any portion of a FOX fork and do not purchase or use any fork that appears to have been modified. Any FOX 32*, 36 or 40 model fork that appears to accommodate a tire larger than 26 inches in nominal diameter, such as 650b or 29 inch, should be avoided. If any doubt exists as to the originality or proper application of a FOX fork please contact a FOX representative.
