Jared Graves Triumphant at the 2009 Australian National Championships!

January 30th, 2009 by adam

Canberra, Australia (January 28, 2009) - In just his first race as a Nema factory rider, Jared Graves captured the 2009 Australian National 4X title! After a 4-year drought, Graves was overjoyed to have recaptured this title.
“I haven’t won one [in 4X] since 2005,” said Graves. “I was a touch late on the gate, but I got the gas down and just really tried to rider smooth with elbows wide!”
Graves’ win strengthens his chances at claiming the World Championship 4X title later this summer on this very course!
Graves followed up his stellar performance in 4X by claiming Silver in the downhill event. Graves narrowly missed the DH title, by three-tenths of a second, to Mick Hannah.

Big mountain superstar Mike Kinrade inks a 2 year deal with Race Face.

January 30th, 2009 by adam

VANCOUVER – January 29th, 2009 - Race Face Components Inc., one of North America’s leading producers of high-end mountain bike components, apparel and protection, is proud to announce the signing of pro shredder Mike Kinrade to the team. Using Race Face’s Atlas FR cranks, high performance clothing and a brand new line of protection, the Kinradical one will be crushing it well into 2010.

“We’re delighted to have Mike on board” says Race Face’s Julian Coffey. “Kinrade has ridden Race Face components for many years, and given his progression, we definitely felt it was time to take things up a notch! Mike has a history of really pushing the boundaries, and for us that’s always a great fit. In addition to shredding with the best, he’s also a super classy guy with a fantastic work ethic and initiative. Add in the never ending onslaught of ideas and product feedback and you’ve got a winning combo – great for new product development as well as for the Race Face brand in general.”

The resurgence of big mountain meets slopestyle riding couldn’t be timed better. Kinrade, a veteran of the extreme scene, is the only rider to compete in all five Red Bull Rampage events. Years of building gnar in the high alpine led to a very convincing 4th place at the 2008 Rampage, and 2009 is shaping up to be a banner year for the man who was homegrown in Nelson, BC.

Known for building remote but incredibly sick lines, Mike also has a sharp eye for film and imagery in general. His experience behind the camera lens as well as in front of it provides him with some very unique insight into how to produce the best results from film and photo shoots. Video, especially online, has been a large part of Race Face’s history, and will be an even bigger part of the component manufacturer’s upcoming campaigns in 2009. Keep an eye out for some exclusive footage of Kinrade and other Race Face riders in the very near future.

“Representing Race Face is a big honor for me” says Mike. “These guys have been pushing mountain biking for a long time now. Back when every other component company thought there was no point in making the gear and components that are mandatory with today’s riding, Race Face was behind us all the way.

Years ago I used to watch riders put pop can shims in their cranks so they could keep using them, but the Race Face North Shore FR cranks never had problems. This was 10 years ago, and things have only gotten better. Riding for them is like being a part of history, I’m stoked, what more can I say!”

Santa Cruz Bicycles - Driver 8!

January 29th, 2009 by adam
Here’s our new bike. We call it the Driver 8.

It has 8 inches of next-generation VPP rear wheel travel. It also has enough room to raise or lower the seat through a 7-inch range. It’s got a 1.5″ head tube, an 83mm wide bb with ISCG05 mounts and 150mm rear spacing with a Maxle thru-axle. So, just what kind of bike is it supposed to be?

8″ of next-generatoin VPP travel

Mud flap shock cover.

We designed the Driver 8 to be a general duty, daily driver gravity hauler. It is a super tough, super versatile bike that is ideal for a life at Whistler. It’s a damn good long travel high speed trail bike (Wait, is that freeriding, or all-mountain high speed trail riding? What about low speed, sphincter pinching gnarl? Does it speak with a Canadian accent? Man, this gets confusing…)

12mm Maxle rear thru-axle

83mm bottom bracket with ISCG 05 mounts

Anyway, it’s a kickass park bike, more lively and poppable and jumpable than the V-10. And it is also a very handy downhill race bike, probably a better race choice for most riders who aren’t World Cup pros on most courses that aren’t World Cup courses. But it can still plow through big rocks and huge drops with the best of them. 8 inches of travel is still a whole lot of cushion for the pushin’…

When the seat is slammed all the way down (7 inches of up and down adjustability, remember?), it is in a similar fore/aft location to the seat on a V-10, but can be run even lower. However, due to the angle of the seat mast, when the seat is raised up as far as it will go, the pedaling position is about the same as that of the Nomad, which is a pretty good location to kick at the cranks and point a bike uphill.

7 inches of up and down seat adjustability

With regard to that “general duty, daily driver” comment, we’ve gone heavy duty with the VPP links. The upper link is carbon fiber, insanely strong, and pivots on four beefy radial contact sealed cartridge bearings. The lower link gets grease ports for easy service, huge 15mm pivot axles with the same trick locking collet head feature as the Blur LT, Nomad and new Blur XC, and it swings on EIGHT angular contact bearings. All bearing sets, top and bottom, are encased in a further set of lip seals and labyrinth washers to further combat the ingress of dirt. The bike comes with its own grease gun, and you won’t need a personal mechanic to deal with any of that.

Carbon fiber upper link with 4 radial contact sealed bearings

Easy service grease ports

You can call it a freeride bike, if you’re into that. You can call it a park bike. You can call it a downhill bike. It can do all that, and more. We’re sticking to our guns. We call it the Driver 8.

Rocky Mountain Bicycles Donates Custom Painted Frame for Brent Thomson Medical Fund.

January 29th, 2009 by adam

Rocky Mountain Bicycles Donates Custom Painted Frame for Brent Thomson Medical Fund.

Vancouver BC -Rocky Mountain Bicycles (RMB) is pleased to announce the donation of a custom painted mountain bike frame for auction, all proceeds will go to benefit the Brent Thomson medical fund. The Auction will begin Thursday January 29th at 5 pm PST.

Brent Thomson, Godfather and Trail Master of Bootleg Canyon (bootlegcanyon.org) suffered a heart attack last Saturday while riding the trails that he has famously cut into the mountains surrounding Boulder City, a stones throw from Las Vegas, Nevada.

When Brent Thomson’s heart attack and surgery came to the attention of the people at Rocky Mountain Bicycles, we knew we had to do something to help Brent and his family. We went to work painting one of our Classic Element Team frames. We also wanted to create a beautiful and eye catching piece in the hopes of attracting as much attention and money as possible for Brent’s medical fund. The result is a truly one-of-a kind, amazing looking frame.

Brent recently underwent the second Quadruple bi-pass in his life. Sixteen years ago he had the same surgery performed due to an unusually high hereditary cholesterol build-up. Unfortunately, we have learned that in post-operative care, Brent experienced a stroke and is currently recovering from that as well.

Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park is an extensive network of World Class Downhill and Cross Country mountain bike trails located in Boulder City, Nevada. The area has been written up in magazines around the world and IMBA (the International Mountain Bike Association) has certified one of the XC trails as an Epic Ride, a title given out only 18 times so far.

This area and its designation are a crown jewel for the cycling world and we at Rocky Mountain bicycles wish to thank Brent for his hard work. All of the proceeds of this auction will go directly to getting Brent up and back out there to continue creating and maintaining this awesome area.

Good Luck Brent and get well from the folks at Rocky Mountain Bicycles
