Freedom Riders Movie Trailer

March 31st, 2009 by adam

The Freedom Riders Story

Gravnetic and KGB Productions and its partners for the film Freedom Riders, does not promote illegal trail building, rather we encourage riders to work with local land managers to create and promote sustainable trails.

Freedom Riders a core group of riders who evolved from covertly building rough and unsustainable trails, to creating a precedent setting relationship with the Forest Service and creating some of the best Freeride trails in the country.

Welcome to Freedom Riders a look at the evolution of the sport and the progression of trail building in this country. From its days as an activity reserved for the few who rebelled against the spandex clad status-quo, to the multimillion dollar, mainstream sport that it is today, see the true inside story on a group of riders that would never see their passion die.

They are the Freedom Riders…

On the morning of July 12, 2008 a large group of dedicated Mountain bikers gathered at the base of Teton Pass. Everyone was dressed to work and the atmosphere was festive. There were tents set up with food from local restaurants, soda, tools and fulfillment in the air. Representatives from the US Forest Service walked around and mingled with the riders. The mission for the day was to add a new massive dirt jump to Lithium–one of the handful of trails in the National Forest dedicated and with a purpose: sustaining the tail systems for downhill mountain biking.

Jump back eight years, a small group of passionate riders meets at the top of Highway 22 the infamous Teton Pass under the cloak of darkness. They stand at the top of a trail, etched roughly into the side of a forty-degree slope. The trail is informally called Ritalin and is the epicenter of an ongoing battle between “the Fed’s” and a rebel group of locals who are dedicated to experiencing the sport of freeriding. These trails are illegal and only the secret squirrel knows of their existence let alone how to navigate through the terrain. Conflicts between armor clad, gladiator “down-hillers,” and other multi users including: cross-country mountain bikers, hikers and horseperson are commonplace.

The Freedom Riders craft their trails, when anyone who would otherwise object is unaware, at speeds that would make the average trails person shudder.

Freedom Riders Film World Premiere At

JACKSON HOLE, WY. (March 31, 2009) - Freedom. We all want it. We all deserve it – especially when it comes to riding our bikes.

Freedom Riders, the latest high-definition mountain biking film from Jackson, WY-based KGB Productions and Gravnetic, will hold its world premiere on Saturday April 18, 2009 at the Sea Otter Classic at the Embassy Suites in Seaside, CA. from 7-9pm. The premiere will be screened at the IMBA California Benefit Party with proceeds to benefit the biking advocacy organization. Tickets cost $10 at the door and there will be a huge raffle featuring loads of killer prizes. IMBA, who’s mission is to create, enhance and protect great trail experiences for mountain bikers worldwide, is a partner for the Freedom Riders premiere, as well as the 50 venue nationwide tour that will commence after Sea Otter.

“We’re super excited to have IMBA as a partner for the Freedom Riders project and given all the hard work and advocacy they put into furthering the sport of biking it’s truly a natural fit,” says KGB co-founder Sam Pope. “The film shows how important trails are to the mountain biking community and how a dedicated group of riders followed their passion to create history.”

Freedom Riders is the Dogtown and Z Boys of mountain biking. The film artistically captures the evolution of freeriding from stealth trail building to forging a working relationship with the U.S. Forest Service to establish the first-ever downhill specific trail in Forest Service history in the Teton Pass area of Wyoming. The film showcases the freeriding subculture in North America from where it was to where it is now by highlighting how the sport has obtained its legitimacy in the public eye.

Freedom Riders provides a compelling story of a group of individuals who never let their passion die while looking at the rich culture and history behind the sport. From old-school footage of Tom Richey and Gary Fisher to the time, hours and sweat it takes to build a trail to hucking and ripping down singletrack, Freedom Riders isn’t your typical bike porn film, it tells a story – an important one for any bike lover. The film with also feature an original soundtrack by Grammy Award nominee Luke Reynolds of Astral Kids.

CRC Team Bikes

March 31st, 2009 by adam
Well after a hectic week of dealing with UPS and customs and Dave and Jason working around the clock building all our bikes they are finally built and I have to say I have never seen better looking bikes. They look fantastic and most importantly very fast! Chain Reaction Cycles have done a great job of getting our graphics done this year to fit the frames, Clayton at Manitou had us some custom blue Dorado graphics made, Hope have made us the blingest matching team blue brakes with the riders names on the levers. The Mavic wheel sets just look so trick, the new Easton Havoc 750 bars are wide enough for the new school but with the same great shape of the older bars. The new Intense frames have come out just as we asked. Jeff Steber has made us the best bikes I think Intense have ever built. After riding for 2 days over the weekend Matt Simmonds said - “The new Intense EVO feels much lighter faster and with the new adjustability we can get the perfect set up on any course”
INTENSE EVO
TAZER 4X
I would like to say a big thank you to all our sponsors on behalf of the whole team for getting us all our parts and gear to us in time for leaving for South Africa today.

Cowbell News and Updates:

March 31st, 2009 by adam

Cowbell News and Updates:
Before a race entry fees go up on April 1st for the Cowbell Marathon Race, here is your reminder, save the day and notice about the fee increase. And sorry, it’s not an Aprils Fool joke either. So, save ten bucks on the Cowbell marathon.
The Marathon Race will be starting in Downtown Davidson, works its way through the neighborhood towards Fisher Farm Park. The mileage to the Fisher Farmers Park is about 6 miles and once in the park there will be a 9 mile loop for 5 laps. So, as of right now the race will be 51 miles.
New class added; Multi-team of four racers, as of now it is all we are keeping it all in one class. When there is more that 4 per gender or co-ed teams signed up, we’ll separate them out. That means for the race there has to be 4 teams of all female, 4 teams of all male and 4 teams of co-ed, before we start to separate them out. I guess one lucky person on the team gets to do an extra lap
As you may know the Cowbell Marathon race offers equal payout. That’s right pay the same entry fee, do the same course and train just as hard and why not pay out equally. The pay is in the Pro-Open class the breakdown of the payout is for the top 5 of $500, $250, $125, $60 and $30.
The US Cup Series, Kenda Cup East and West are going on strong out West. The Cowbell Summer Solstice XC race is part of the excitement this year. Get the youth racers involved with the Specialized Pay Back, for the first 10 youths that register online will receive a $25 VISA gift card. Just like the Cowbell Marathon Race, the Cowbell XC Race will be paying out equally to the ladies and the guys. The breakdown of the equal payout is $245, $190, $140, $120, and $95 in the Pro class. A new class has been added for the XC Just For Fun, a race just for fun doing about half the course for the love of the sport and being supportive of mtn bike racing.
The Kenda Cup East Series:
For the US Cup Series News and Updates:
The Homewood Suites is the Official Headquarter Hotel for the Cowbell Race weekend, rates and meal deals coming soon about where to stay and eat while in Davidson. Please check out what is going on in Davidson, NC; www.ci.davidson.nc.us
There are few other races coming up:
The 6hrs of Warrior Creek is this weekend. These guys and gals really know how to build some really good mtn trails. http://www.bmcc.us/6wc.htm
The first 100 mile race of the NUE 100 series is coming soon, the Cohutta 100 and the Big Frog 65, good race to start with, flowing single track and nice views after the gravel climbs. http://www.newleafadventures.com/cohuttahome.html
PMBAR, sold out, but well worth checking out. http://www.pisgahproductions.com/
Dirt, Sweat and Gears 12h race, what a shindig of race this is and well worth the trip to enjoy 12hrs of racing. http://www.dirtsweatandgears.com/

Trek Racing Season So Far…

March 30th, 2009 by adam

Trek Racing Season So Far … Seven Wins and Counting!

(Waterloo, WI)

Trek’s racing programs and its flagship models, the Top Fuel and the Session 88, are having a bang-up season so far. Just six weeks since Rene Wildhaber took the Trek Remedy to a definitive win at the Urge Kenya enduro downhill, Trek has captured a U23 Pan-Am title, a stage win at Cape Epic, and two consecutive wins at the Maxxis Cup.

Mathias and Lukas Flückiger win Stage 7 photo: Gary Perkin

1st Place Absa Cape Epic Stage 7; 8th Overall
Trek World Racing’s cross country brothers Mathias and Lukas Flückiger rode their team-edition Top Fuel 9.9 SSLs to victory during Stage 7 of South Africa’s Cape Epic. After finishing second place in Stage 3, the Flu brothers rode hard despite mechanical setbacks to finish a respectable 8th place overall. Not bad for a first ride on not just the Top Fuel 9.9 SSL, but also their first full suspension experience, during a race that was deemed their “training ride” from the start.

Bart Brentjens and Chris Jongewaard take 2nd Overall

1st Place Absa Cape Epic Stage 6; 2nd Overall
Claiming what could be considered the “most consistent” ride of Cape Epic, the Trek – Bart Brentjens Mountain Bike Racing Team claimed second place overall aboard Trek’s OCLV Carbon Elite 9.9 hardtail. At a feathery 1100 grams, the frame with the world’s first no-cut seatmast was the right tool for Dutch marathon legend Bart Brentjens and Chris Jongewaard. Trek – Brentjens also claimed second place in Stage 5 and victory in Stage 6.

Emily Batty is U23 Pan-Am Champion

1st Place U23 Pan Am Games
Emily Batty can claim to be the most photographed athlete in Trek’s arsenal, but now the 21 year-old Canadian of the Trek Store Toronto Team also has a prestigious title — that of U23 Pan American Champion. Emily finished a solid seven minutes ahead of the competition aboard her Top Fuel WSD.

1st Place Maxxis Cup #1 and #2
Trek World Racing’s Tracy Moseley hasn’t missed a beat with her Session 88. Her pre-season race wins prove that aboard a new platform with world-class geometry and suspension, she will be the one to watch this coming season. In Vaigo and Gouveia, Tracy smashed the field and put in times that would put many an elite male rider to shame.

1st Place New Zealand National Championships
Trek World Racing’s Justin Leov nailed it on his home turf to overcome former teammate Sam Blenkinsop and claim the New Zealand National Champion title aboard his Session 88. In what is fast becoming a winter training grounds for the world’s fastest downhillers, Justin ruled the roost. Regarding his race bike — “My Session never missed a beat all weekend, and with the weight being so low, it helped me carry speed through the slower sections.”

René Wildhaber wins Urge Kenya

1st Place Urge Kenya
In the fast-evolving category of enduro downhill, Rene Wildhaber of the Trek Racing Cooperative took first place aboard his Remedy. Known as “Mr. Mega Avalanche” for his consistent and dominating performance in the popular mass-start European downhill events that often take hours to complete, Rene rocked the “ultimate gravity adventure” on an unknown course. Of his Remedy, “I am convinced of the high quality…”

###
About Trek World Racing
Driven by the belief that the crucible of competition is the ultimate proving-ground for its bikes, Trek is proud to be the title-sponsor of the Trek World Racing team, helping fuel the team’s ambition as it pursues victory in both gravity and cross country events. Owned and managed by 23 Degrees Sports Management, the team and its six riders will be officially launched in South Africa on April 8th. At that time, a team website will go live.

About Trek – Brentjens
Trek and Bart Brentjens have had a long-standing relationship. When Team Dolphin dissolved at the end of 2008, Bart proved he’s not only one of the world’s most prominent marathon racers, but he’s also a great organizer. Consisting of five riders, the team will take its Elite 9.9 OCLV hardtails to World Cups and Benelux races.

About Trek Racing Cooperative
With support from JBL, Fox and Shimano, the Trek Racing Cooperative exists to focus individual athletes both international and domestic on their respective disciplines that don’t require a team structure. Also called the “Co-Op,” the program supports racers of all disciplines—from Enduro DH to Ultra Endurance. The roster consists of Rene Wildhaber, Chris Eatough, Jeff Schalk, Ross Schnell, Brian Smith and Jenny Smith, as well as a host of 25+ athletes who race at the top of their regional class across the United States.

About Trek Store Toronto
Team Director Steve Neal knows that Canada has immense talent when it comes to mountain biking. Together with Trek Store Toronto owner Barry Near, the two have pulled together a group of athletes that will race Trek Top Fuels across Canada and at World Cups. With Emily Batty posting the first win, expect more from teammates Pete Glassford, Mical Dyck, Eric Batty, and Adam Morka.

About Trek Bicycles:
Headquartered in Waterloo, Wisconsin, Trek Bicycle Corporation is a global leader in bicycle design and manufacturing. From its first mountain bike in 1983 to the introduction of the world’s first concentric-pivot full suspension system—the patent-pending ABP suspension design—Trek continues to pioneer mountain bike technology that is simple, robust, and efficient.

Vans Warner SPD compatible shoes

March 30th, 2009 by adam

Intro
BMX racing is one of the sports that helped build Vans into a household name in the late 70’s and throughout the 80’s. With the natural progression of BMX racing and now downhill mountain bike racing requiring specific footwear, it became apparent not everyone can pull holeshots or win a downhill race on a pair of skate shoes anymore.
We decided to design a shoe that would meet the demands for BMX racing and mountain biking, not only in function, but with style as well. You don’t have to look like you’re wearing slippers from the future or tap dance shoes anymore in order to get the performance that these sports demand.
We’ve gathered the best riders in each discipline to help us develop and test our shoes to make sure they not only perform for the top of the podium, but also look stylish while getting you there.

Warner
The Warner is the first choice in style, comfort, and performance for SPD compatible shoes for today’s BMX racers and mountain bikers alike. The Warner utilizes our lightweight gum rubber “Off the Wall” tread pattern molded to our performance driven SPD compatible outsole. We’ve internally relieved material from key points on the SPD compatible plate to keep it light yet stiff over the mid foot area while providing flex in other key areas. The upper infuses a blend of weather resistant synthetic leathers and vented ballistic nylon mesh with a removable hook and loop adjustable tension strap. Our self centering gored tongue keeps debris out of the shoe while the molded EVA foam sock liner ensures that your feet stay comfortable and supported all day.

Availability
• Limited availability starts April 2nd 2009
• MSRP - $90.00 US
• Men’s US sizes 6-13 available with half sizes

Long Weekend of Festivities Planned for 2009 Sea Otter Classic

March 27th, 2009 by adam

LONG WEEKEND OF FESTIVITIES PLANNED FOR 2009 SEA OTTER CLASSIC

Monterey, Calif. (March 26, 2009) – Cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to excitement and high energy fun this April. The Sea Otter Classic, a four-day celebration of sport, has a multitude of events, activities and action planned for a long weekend of fun, family and community, April 16-19, 2009.

Action All Around and Up Above

At any one time, spectators in the Sea Otter Village can enjoy 360-degree views of races and activities going on around the venue, including games, parties, contests, costumes, team autographs, personal conversations with the pros, product demos, beer and BBQ, live music and bargain bins and samples in the Expo.

The action will even be overhead, as teams of specialists do flips and stunts in various shows and events around the venue. And on Saturday and Sunday, as part of the midday ceremonies kicking off the Pro racing on each day, the action will also be in the sky, as the U.S. Navy will conduct an F-5 fighter jet flyover! Following the flyover, spectators will enjoy the Presidio of Monterey Air Force Honor Guard followed by the sights and sounds of the Monterey High School marching band and international flags representing all our athletes as they parade and play music around the Sea Otter Village.

Ryan Leech
Photo: Ian Hylands

Ryan Leech, a well-known specialist in “trials” riding (a technical aspect of cycling which includes balancing, on a bicycle, on a variety of obstacles), brings his incredible tricks to Sea Otter each year. Spectators won’t believe their eyes when they see Leech balancing on something barely wider than his bike tire, all the while chatting away with the audience on a wireless microphone.

“I’m excited to once again contribute to the great atmosphere at the Sea Otter Classic,” said Leech. “I like to push my show riding to leave the audience feeling psyched to go out and ride bikes, whatever style that may be.”

More wow-inducing biking entertainment will be in the form of the GT Airshow, featuring 10 world-famous BMX freestyle athletes performing aerial stunts 20-30 feet above the ramps. The GT Airshow is located near the Sierra Nevada Beer & BBQ Garden.

And when the Airshow takes a break, spectators can turn their attention to the Dual Stunt races, where two athletes compete side-by-side on 400-foot-long courses of 10-foot-high platforms, ladder bridges, wooden obstacles and jumps. Jeff Lenosky, freeride pioneer and former trials national champion, designed the man-made course to be challenging.

“When people look at the course, they should think, there’s no way someone can ride that,” said Lenosky. “Between the kind of obstacles these guys ride and the head-to-head race element, this is an event that will knock your socks off.”

The Buzz in the Air

“Excitement in the air” was never truer than at the Sea Otter Classic, where announcers call the races on Sea Otter Radio, and live music gives a beat to the action around the venue.

One of the things that makes Sea Otter such an extraordinary experience is the buzz that permeates the event, as everyone involved is there to celebrate their passion for cycling – even the guys in the band.

“The first year I raced at Sea Otter, I fell in love with the festival,” said Stephen Wilson of Juan Nebulla Productions, who produces the live music show. “Afterwards, I approached the organizer about adding a music element to the world-class event, and last year we organized two full days of music, ranging from acoustic solo acts to rock to hip-hop. I raced again, as did some of the other musicians, but luckily the music was better than our racing!”

Heaven for Kids: Kids races, Egg Hunt and Kids rodeo, Carnival, Skipper.

When the kids have energy left and you don’t, head over to the Kids’ Carnival, which includes large, inflatable bouncy houses, a bungee jumper, a climbing wall, interactive games, and more.

The Kids Bike Zone, which is conveniently located near the Sierra Nevada tent, offers another concentrated area of activities for future Sea Otter racers, including the Kids Bicycle Playground, Kids races, and two of Sea Otter’s most popular events, Sea Otter Egg Hunt and Kids Bicycle Rodeo.

The Kids Bike Zone designed for kids 10 and younger, is a fun place for our littlest cyclists to gain confidence on their bikes and just have fun. And it’s not just fun for kids! Even non-parents will appreciate the huge, proud smiles of tykes as they progress from riding in circles to riding over boards and teeter totters.

The Sea Otter Egg Hunt has been entertaining the 8-and-under set for more than 10 years. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 10 am, Skipper leads a search for “hidden” eggs filled with prizes.

And once they have their eggs, they can participate in the Kids Bicycle Rodeo, designed to help instill a love of bikes from an early age. In this activity, children aged 10 and under will be having so much fun, that they won’t realize they are also learning basic safety and riding rules.

And of course, there are also Kids Bike Races. Every racer is a winner, and every winner gets a medal to proudly wear, just like the pros. Kids nine and under will race on a course designed just for them in the Kids Bike Zone. A new addition this year is a race for kids aged 10 to 12, on the same slippery, technical course raced by professional short track racers.

Best of all, every one of these activities for kids 12 and under are free!

Product Demo Area and Ride Zone: Try Before you Buy!

One of the best parts of Sea Otter is the opportunity for consumers to talk directly with reps from their favorite makers of cycling and outdoor gear. Now Sea Otter has added an entire area not only to talk tech with the reps, but to try out the equipment on the spot, and then try out the competition! With over 25 exhibitors set up for product demos, it also means the opportunity to learn new skills with better equipment.

There is ample space and time to do the testing. A short mountain bike loop and road bike course are marked, and the Sea Otter Classic Ride Zone provides a variety of terrain for dirt riding. The Ride Zone consists of a variety of features designed by legendary freerider and premier trail builder Randy Spangler. Obstacles are set up for riders of all levels, including a pump-track, two small rows of tables, a cross-country loop with bridges, switchbacks, rock gardens, and water crossings.

Get on your bike and ride!

For those who prefer pedaling at a slower pace, Sea Otter offers wonderful rides along some of Monterey’s most beautiful roads and trails. Participants on these rides take home not only great memories, but often, new friends!

Bicycling Magazine Road Bike Tours are perfect for the family to experience together. Two routes of different distances include views of Monterey Peninsula’s green hills and spring flowers, and pro athletes riding along offering tips to participants. Click here for more information.

Mountain Bike Magazine Off-Road Tours offer access to some of the most beautiful singletrack and fireroads of California, at a pace comfortable for participants of all ages. Registration includes the option to support IMBA California, a non-profit educational association that organizes advocacy and trail building efforts statewide and strengthens California’s mountain bike clubs. One of the most special aspects of Sea Otter is its role as a meeting place for friends, families, teams, and industry people, of all cycling disciplines. Cycling clubs from all over the west coast that have always organized group trips, camping, and race or ride participation can now add another gathering spot to their list. This year Sea Otter opened up a “Club Zone”, where 1clubs will have their own space to prepare their bicycles, relax and tell stories about their races and rides – just like the pro teams! This means a great opportunity for the public to learn about clubs in their region and join these cycling communities.
