Race Face supporting Dirt Series Scholarships with Custom Crank Auction

VANCOUVER - May 29, 2009 - Along with all the fame and travel, the sickest part of being one of our Race Face team riders is getting fully customized RF components to ride. It’s more than just getting a mother lode of the most killer gear around, you get the most killer gear that’s been made just for you.

This year, we’re not going to offer up a spot on the Race Face team, but we are going to give you the chance to get something completely custom and ridiculously sexy, courtesy of the marketing crew at Race Face and our good friends at Altech Anodizing. We’re auctioning off six sets of sweet Atlas FR cranks in a rainbow of colours on eBay–two at a time, all summer long. The winner of each auction will have the back pocket of the left crank arm custom laser etched with the message of their choice. Make it whatever you want, just remember this is a family show boys.

It’s not like the money we raise is going into our beer fund for Metal Fridays down in the engineering department, either. We’re donating all the cash we raise through these auctions to the Dirt Series Scholarship program. In the last 8 years, the coaches of the Dirt Series have travelled far and wide from their home base in Whistler to teach new MTB skills to women and men. They’ve taught beginners how to roll, intermediates how to rip, and have helped rippers go bigger than they’ve gone before. This year they’re hosting 17 camps, including five co-ed events, from Southern California to Alberta.

Even though sponsorship from companies like Race Face helps keep Dirt Series camp entry fees as low as possible, there are still deserving mountain bikers who just can’t afford it. Those riders can apply for a Dirt Series Scholarship to have their camp fees waived so they can learn from the best without having to go into hock or skip any meals. All proceeds from these custom crank auctions will be donated in support of this program.

Each new auction will be announced on the Race Face and Dirt Series websites. First up, heavy hitters — Rum Red and Agent Orange Atlas FR Cranks battle it out for the bigger payday. Bidding opens May 29 closing June 6, 2009. So figure out what you want your custom cranks to say and then go bid on a pair. You’ll be the envy of your buddies when they drool over the sweet, coveted prize Race Face custom made for you and, as if that’s not enough incentive, we’re throwing in a ‘Get Outta Jail Free’ card with your better half. What better way to justify your online purchase than by saying “But baby, I did it to help send someone to school!”.

Atherton Racing Extended May 09

Animal Commencal

This image is one of the few of Dan at Andorra, Sven Martin got this shot on the upper section of the Vallnord course the very run Dan crashed and broke his shoulder. The big over the bars crash Dan suffered in downhill practice put pay to him retaining the number spot he won in last years 4X.

Episode two goes live on MPORA.com on Friday 29th June. Subscribe here to download the Atherton Project to your iPod.

US OPEN

Gee headed on a whistle stop trip to the US to take on the formidable US open. The demanding track at the Diablo Freeride Park isn’t one to be taken lightly as Gee found out in both early practice sessions – a couple of over-the-bar crashes on one of the many technical rock sections left Gee with a bit to work out for Sunday’s finals.

As if we hadn’t already seen enough rain this season, yet another downpour arrived just hours before the final. With not one practice run on the wet course, things were going to be pretty hard going for all. Gee made a few errors on his run but his time of 2.32.72 was just two seconds off the win and good enough for 2nd place.

TEAM UPDATE

As if one ‘broken’ Atherton wasn’t enough, Dan joined sister Rach on the treatment table following a crash during downhill practice in Andorra. He is recovering well despite breaking his scapular (shoulder) and hopes to be back on the bike in time for Fort William.

Rach is recovering well following the operation on her damaged shoulder nerve. She is due to have her stitches out on the 28th May and is already itching to get back on the bike. A more in depth description of the operation can be read on Rachels blog – although this isn’t for the faint hearted… http://animalcommencal.tv/rachel/blog

WORLD CUP STANDINGS

After an agonisingly close result in Andorra, Gee now sits in 4th position in the overall UCI Nissan World Cup standings. He is just 36 points behind second and 163 points behind leader Steve Peat however with the next World Cup event on home soil, Gee is looking to better his 2nd place at last year’s Fort William event to take him closer to the overall lead.

With Dan missing Andorra he is now 200 points a drift off the lead in the 4X however he plans to be back on the bike for Fort William so expect him to be on the gas chasing down his first win of the year.

RED BULL REPORTER

The UK stop of the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series is fast approaching! As part of the Red Bull Reporter Project, Red Bull is giving a budding sports writer a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal to the UK’s most exciting sporting family with special access to the Atherton’s pit area. Capture all the excitement as UK favourites Gee takes on the exhausting ‘Fort Bill’ downhill course and brother Dan goes for glory in the 4X.

SUMMER TRAINING DAY DATES ANNOUNCED

Despite a super hectic schedule, the Atherton’s have managed to find time to offer two exclusive Training day dates this summer. July 4th will see the popular Fundementals course return to Llandeglla Forest in North Wales, if you want to improve your general riding skills and learn off World Champions then this is the course for you.

Following this on the 5th June will be the popular Race Clinic, Dan and Gee will run you through their secrets to success as well as helping you improve your technical skills and race craft.

IMBA Announces Historic Opportunity for New Mountain Bike Access in Marin County, California

IMBA Announces Historic Opportunity for New Mountain Bike Access in Marin County, California

California State Parks has announced a proposal to open a singletrack trail for mountain biking in Marin County, on the shoulders of Mt. Tamalpais. The agency plans to allow bicycle use on the 4-mile Bill’s Trail segment, and is soliciting public comments on the project. The commentary period ends on 6-26.

“I’m urging mountain bikers across the country to send comments in support of this project,” says Mike Van Abel, executive director of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). “It’s hard to imagine a more important location than Marin, where mountain bikers have worked incredibly hard to regain access to the very trails that helped bring our sport into the world.”

This landmark opportunity is the direct result of more than three years of partnership building with the parks department by IMBA California, Access4Bikes and the Bicycle Trails Council of Marin. A successful opening of Bill’s Trail will set the stage for bicycle access to several other singletrack trails in Marin, which is widely considered to be one of the birthplaces of modern mountain biking. Despite its historic role, Marin has seen precious few opportunities for mountain biking open to the public in recent years.

IMBA issued a call to action, asking mountain bikers to tell California State Parks that they support the decision to open Bill’s Trail to bicycles.Within 24 hours of posting the alert, IMBA has recorded nearly 1,000 comments that have been submitted in favor of mountain bike access.

A small number of local hiking and equestrian groups have vowed to fight against any new access for mountain biking in Marin County, despite plentiful evidence that well-designed trails can be successfully shared by various user groups, and that mountain biking is a sustainable, low-impact form of recreation.

“I think that, broadly speaking, the community of trail users in Marin is ready for this,” says IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward. “We have seen great success with our volunteer mountain bike patrol program there. Mountain bikers care deeply about protecting the gorgeous trails and natural areas in Marin, and we will continue working with like-minded groups.” According to Ward, outreach programs such as Share the Trail are creating stronger relations between user groups, and the outlook for increased mountain bike access in Marin has never been brighter.

Located within the Mt. Tamaplais watershed in Samuel Taylor State Park, Bill’s Trail winds through native ferns, wildflowers and hazelnut trees. It averages a reasonable 7-percent grade, and its six switchbacks provide riders with multiple views of the surrounding landscapes. While it is expected that bike access on Bill’s Trail will be limited to alternate days at first, the parks department states that this stipulation will be open to further review.

California State Parks is expected to announce opportunities for bicycling on other nearby routes in upcoming months. The Diaz Ridge Trail, which runs through Mt. Tamalpais State Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area property, is scheduled to receive a major reroute this summer. This project could produce shared-use singletrack joining State Parks and National Park Service properties.

May 28th, 2009 by adam

Life Cycles and Devinci Cycles teams up!

After more than two years of filming Life Cycles, the Stance Films crew was heading northern Quebec (Canada) to the Devinci Cycles factory. The plan was to take some factory shots and they got more than they expected!

Video of carting (http://www.stepdownproductions.com/cart.html)

The crew was in Devinci’s headquarters for the week, filming, riding, karting and much more! So you will definitely see some nice shots of the factory in this more than anticipated movie. You’ll also be able to see young gun Evan Schwartz form the Devinci Factory team ripping some trails in his segment. There’s also going to be some ‘’behind the scenes’’ material of the Factory on the bonus DVD of Life Cycles where you’ll see how the crew was able to create the shots in Life Cycle.

Stay posted for more news of this movie, which is going to redefine the mountain bike film scene.

Tour de Peninsula Family Bike Ride Returns to Bay Area

May 28th, 2009 by adam

Tour de Peninsula Family Bike Ride
Returns to Bay Area

Online Registration Now Open for Family Fun Event

Press Release, For Immediate Release

SAN MATEO, CALIF. (May 20, 2009) – After a one-year hiatus, the Tour de Peninsula recreational bike ride and family social gathering will return to the Bay Area on Sunday, August 2, in scenic Coyote Point Park, San Mateo.

A highlight of the Bay Area social calendar for nearly 20 years, the Dirty Shirt ride is back – same as it ever was – with a great new location, a variety of bicycle routes to suit every type of cyclist and full day of family outdoor activities. Proceeds benefit the San Mateo County Parks Foundation and Bicycle Sunday – car-free biking on Canada Road.

Registration is now open at www.supportparks.org/tdp.

Bicycling

The Tour de Peninsula offers four fully-supported route options on beautiful courses designed to suit everyone from young children and first time riders to serious cyclists. The rides – Kids, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced – will take riders on popular Peninsula bike routes that visit numerous San Mateo County Parks, with breaks at rest stops and scenic sites along the way. Route options include:

  • Kids/Family Route – 1-3 miles on bike trail in Coyote Point Park
  • Short Route for beginner to intermediate cyclists – 20 miles
  • Long Route for intermediate to experienced cyclists – 31 miles
  • Metric Century for advanced cyclists – 63 miles

Family Events and Activities

The Tour de Peninsula is more than just a ride – it’s a fun, social outdoor experience for the whole family. After the rides, participants will gather at Coyote Point’s Captain’s House Picnic Area, a beautiful location nestled in a shaded eucalyptus grove, for a day of family activities including:

  • The Coyote Point Museum for Environmental Education, open at no charge to all TdP participants and their families. www.coyoteptmuseum.org
  • MagicMountain, an award-winning playground with 6 slides and play features for toddlers through teens
  • The Bike Skills Demo Area, a short course of entry-level bike challenges for kids, provided by San Francisco Urban Riders
  • Live band entertainment
  • Picnic tables and grills (bring your own food and beverages, or purchase from concessions on site)
  • Networking and lively conversation with other Bay Area residents and families

Benefit

Apart from providing a great day out in beautiful scenery, the main purpose of the Tour de Peninsula is to raise funds for the San Mateo County Parks Foundation and Bicycle Sunday – car-free biking on Canada Road.   The San Mateo County Parks Foundation funds projects that restore habitat, provide environmental education, improve trails, support volunteer efforts, and encourage recreational use of parks. Since its founding in 1998, the Foundation and its members have provided millions of dollars for San Mateo County parks.

History

Having unexpectedly grown out of Mark Simon’s newspaper columns about an imaginary bike ride, the Tour de Peninsula was founded circa 1991 by Mr. Simon and his friend Rick Sutton (Sea Otter Classic founder). With catch phrases such as “no pain, no pain,” and, “It’s not a race, it’s a ride,” the event was a semi-spoof of the Tour de France and ran through the campus of Stanford University. An instant success, 150 riders showed up with beaten-up old bikes and were told cheating is OK. People took short cuts and made frequent stops for donuts, taking up to three hours to ride a 15-mile course. Over the years, the ride continued to grow and in some ways became more reverent (although some people still dust off their old clunkers for it), but the jovial spirit has continued. Dirty Shirts are still seen among all the spandex and sport-wool.

Registration

Rates: Kids 11 and under are free. 13-16 year olds are $20. Adults 17 and over are $40. Registration includes TdP t-shirt (no t-shirt for complimentary registrations 11 and under).

Deadline: Participants are encouraged to register online by July 31, by visiting www.supportparks.org/tdp.  Ride-day registration is also available for an additional $5, beginning at 6:30 am.

Questions: Contact tdp@supportparks.org, 650-321-1638

Volunteer

The 2009 Tour de Peninsula needs enthusiastic volunteers to help out. To sign up, complete and submit the form at www.supportparks.org/tourform09.html.  We will send you everything you’ll need to prepare for the day including when and where to show up, what to wear and more. Volunteers get lunch, a Tour de Peninsula crew T-shirt and San Mateo County Parks Foundation hat.

Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids Launched; 150 Underprivileged Kids to Get Free Bikes on June 6th

May 28th, 2009 by adam

San Diego, Calif. (May 26, 2009) There will be a lot of smiling faces at the National City Boys & Girls Club (in San Diego County) on June 6th. That’s when Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids will be distributing 150 bikes, helmets and locks to needy children in the non-profit foundation’s first bicycle give-away.

“It’s going to be so much fun watching 150 children get free bicycles,” says Dan Gindling, president of Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids, a 501 (c) (3) foundation. “For many of the kids it will be the first bike they can call their own. I think Kimberlee would be very proud of what we are doing in her name.”

Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids was created to honor Kimberlee Caledonia, an avid cyclist who died of brain cancer in 2008. Kimberlee loved to ride bicycles and she loved to teach, so paring bicycles with children into a non-profit foundation that bears her name is a perfect combination.

In addition to the bikes, helmets and locks, the children will receive:

- Safety and riding instruction from the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition.

- Tips on fixing a flat from Randy Clark, a well-known San Diego cycling coach.

- Free basic service for six months courtesy of numerous San Diego County independent bike dealers including the Bicycle Warehouse chain and South Bay Bicycles.

- Free Tour de France cycling caps courtesy of Pace Sportswear.

- Loads of Door Prizes.

Says Theresa Davis, Area Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego:Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids has been a Godsend to the kids of the National City community. In these tough economic times, many children from the National City School District do not have the means to purchase a new bike, now they will not only get a free bicycle but a helmet and lock as well.”

Preceding the bicycle give-away, on Friday, June 5th from 6 to 10 p.m. Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids will be hosting a bicycle assembly party. The event is open to pre-assigned volunteers and media only.

What: Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids - free bicycles, helmets and locks to 150 underprivileged children

Where: National City Boys & Girls Club, 1430 D Ave., National City, CA 91950

When: Saturday June 6, Noon - 3pm

About Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids

Established to honor Kimberlee Caledonia, a talented and avid cyclist from San Diego who died of brain cancer in 2008, Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids distributes free bicycles, helmets and locks to underprivileged 2nd graders. The 501 (c) (3) organization will annually distribute free bicycles to underprivileged children. For more information, go to www.kimsbikes.org.
