New Cannondale RZ 120 and RZ 140

June 30th, 2009 by Gregg

The ever popular Rize is now called the RZ. New for 2010 is the RZ 120 (120mm of rear travel) and the RZ 140. Why the name change? It was actually due to a trademark issue that involved another company outside of the bike biz (note: the change came very recently so you will hear and see these bikes referred to as the Rize in the videos and these photos). The name may be changed, but everything you loved about the Rize is back and even better.

Ride Impression:
I personally tested at length, a Rize 1 last year ( http://reviews.mtbr.com/blog/cannondale-rize-pro-review/ ) and I got to test the RZ 120 at River Run in Sun Valley, ID. The RZ 120 rides as if it were 140. I didn’t get a chance to ride the RZ 140, but I’m sure it also rides as if it has more travel.

The rear suspension is now better matched to the plushness and stiffness of the Lefty Carbon Max (one of the lightest and best tracking forks ever). The rear stays efficient on the climbs and still plush on the descents, even under braking.

In these two videos, Double D (aka Doug Dalton, Cannondale R&D) shows us the highlights of the RZ 120 and RZ 140:

Info about the 2010 Cannondale bikes coming soon.

Scott USA 2010 product launch

June 30th, 2009 by Gregg
Scott Genius 20 at River Run - Sun Valley, Idaho

Scott Genius 20 at River Run - Sun Valley, Idaho

In this video, Adrian Montgomery of Scott USA goes over three new 2010 bikes: the Scale 29er, the Voltage freeride full suspension, and the Genius 20:

Highlights:

Scale 29er

  • hydroformed aluminum frame
  • 69.5 degree head angle
  • MSRP approx. $1699

    Voltage freeride full suspension line

  • developed with slopestyle and freeriders
  • 140 to 180mm rear travel
  • forged and machined linkages
  • features interchangeable dropout system (quick release, thru 12, maxle)
  • ridden by Timo Pritzel and Lance McDermott

    Genius 20

  • lightweight carbon fiber all mountain bike 150mm travel
  • handelbar mounted twin lock system (full travel, 110 mm, or lockout) lockout front and rear at the same time
  • equilizer shock
  • lightest 150mm travel bike in its category

    Ride Impression:
Besides taking pictures and video, I also had a chance to actually ride the Scott USA Genius 20 at the Bike Press Camp held recently in Sun Valley, Idaho. I only rode 1 run down from the top of the lower lift at River Run. The trail is all singletrack, very flowy with a lot of switchbacks. The dirt is mostly well groomed, with an occasional root and small rocks. There is nothing really steep or technical about this trail, so my ride impression is limited by the easy nature of the terrain. I did almost zero climbing on this bike.

The rear suspension design is very supple and allowed me to stay seated a lot more than on other bikes with less travel. This was a very good thing for me, as this ride was the last one after a full day of running around covering every manufacturer at the event, riding 22 miles on the road, and doing 1 previous run. If I had more time on this bike, I would have liked to have dialed in the front fork a bit more, to match the plush rear end, but both performed extremely well.

I did not have a chance to reallly tryout the dual lockout feature, other than tooling around the resort at low speed. It was very easy to reduce travel or fully lockout both shocks.

For the amount of travel that this bike has (150mm) and with such a supple rear end, this bike pedaled uphill suprisingly well (for the short climbs that I did do, mostly out of the saddle). I did not notice much bob while climbing in the middle ring, nor did I notice any stiffening of the rear suspension under braking.

I wanted to try more varied trail conditions, but I did not want to miss the last shuttle back to the resort after a long, full day of riding. Thus, I would have to wait another day to see how this bike performs in other conditions.

The dirt line has been adapted for 2009: A huge sized “Suzuki Air Time Line” beats like all of the jumps seen before in contests worldwide. The Oakley Sick O award, a Crankworx wildcard as well as 10,000 Euros overall prize money will make the riders go big. The iXS European DH Cup, including the Austrian Downhill Championships, and a packed side program will entertain all the gravity fans.

Every year the Out of Bounds Weekend is an important event in the European freeride schedule. Unlike other great events that had to be canceled, because of a lack of sponsors and their commitment in the mountain bike scene, Leogang’s freeride festival is setting new standards in 2009. The riders are also giving their tribute to the Out of Bounds Weekend. Over 60 riders from 16 different countries will travel to Leogang even just because of the legendary 26TRIX dirt jump comp:

    Nils Örnjäger (SWE)
    Andrew  Taylor (USA)
    Greg  Watts (USA)

The riders have to be prepared: a second even bigger “Suzuki Air Time Line” has been built for 2009 to launch them higher than ever into the Austrian sky. It will be exciting to see, who got the biggest balls to jump that line and which tricks will be shown on the two super-sized doubles in this section of the course. No question, it will pay out to show your skills and craziest tricks for sure. It’s not only the Oakley Sick O Award that is waiting for the sickest move of the comp, but also a Kokanee Crankworx Slopestyle Whistler wildcard is given to the one who wins the 26TRIX! OK, Andreu Lacondeguy, Ben Boyko, Andrew Taylor, Greg Watts, Benny Korthaus, Amir Kabbani, Darren Berrecloth, Graham Aggasiz and Trond Hansen are already on the rider list of the upcoming Crankworx, but the next best one in the final results will get a ticket to Canada and his chance to compete at the most well-known slopestyle comp of the year. Be sure, the guys will go crazy to reach that goal.

The 26TRIX will be split up in a qualifying and a final day: qualifications are scheduled on Friday 10th from 2:00pm as well as the Saturday 11th features the semifinals (2.00pm) and the grand finals (5:00pm). Be prepared to watch fifty riders battling for their way into the finals.  In the semi finals, 32 riders will have two runs to show their best stuff, the better one counts. The best 15 of them make their way into the finals, which consist of three runs for each competitor. To guarantee the visitors the best hardcore 26-inch action, only the best run counts and determines the winner of the 26TRIX. For all spectators and also the riders Leogang will feature for the first time the Live judging, so the points of each run will be shown right after each rider’s run on the scoring board.

But the Out Of Bounds Weekend is not only about the 26TRIX. Austria’s biggest freeride festival has a well packed overall program:

Thursday: open 26TRIX training all day long
Friday: 26TRIX training from 9:00am, Qualifying 26TRIX and training iXS EU DH Cup from 2:00pm, and from 8:00pm big BBQ party with pros and the legendary Bunny Hop contest, where everybody can measure his bunny hop skills with the pros (no attendance fee, but 200 Euros prize money for the winner)
Saturday: from 9:00am on: Training 26TRIX, at 1:00pm an open air gig of the Austrian Reggae band “Die Zuagroasten”, from 2pm: seeding runs iXS EU DH Cup and semi finals 26TRIX, as well as from 5:00pm the grand finals of the 26TRIX. The big prize giving will be from 7:00pm on which will announce all the winners from Saturday: first the winners of the Wings for Life Raffle, then the Oakley Sick O Award, and the 26TRIX winners and at the end the new Crankworx wildcard owner. Afterwards a signing session gives you the chance to have a small chat with the riders and to get your personal autograph.  From 8:00 pm on, the big “de Buam” party will rock the Sportarena Leogang, right next to the Gondola station. Last year more than 1,000 people partied hard, some even till the early morning hours.
Sunday: from 12:30pm finals iXS European DH Cup and Austrian DH Championships, and followed by the prize giving.

The racers, who are competing at the iXS European Downhill Cup in Leogang, will face a course with a length of 2.3 kilometers and a vertical drop of 480 meters. Bikepark Leogang’s downhill track called “Speedster” is known as a technically very challenging one. But not only pro riders are meant to take part. Also amateurs are welcome to register on: www.ixsdownhillcup.com.

Don’t miss this unique festival and contest set-up! Diversified and hardcore mountain bike action is guaranteed!

    June 30th, 2009 by adam
No Dust, No Ruts, No Brake Bumps or Lift Lines.
The private clinic has been a popular request, so we gave the people what the people wanted..  We had so many people asking about single day small group functions, that we had to ditch our original “open jams” and replace them with reservation only private instruction, and/or, small group programs.   Remember, any questions can be answered by a simple email.  (info@nwsof.com)

    1 DAY CLINICS

BMX and Freeride Jams are now Private Clinic and Instruction Days. If you would like information on private clinics and small group ripping, email (jaymo@nwsof.com).

The private clinic has been a popular request, so we gave the people what the people wanted..  We had so many people asking about single day small group functions, that we had to ditch our original “open jams” and replace them with reservation only private instruction, and/or, small group programs.   Again, if you are interested in a private group day, drop jaymo an email.  (jaymo@nwsof.com)

The private jam is great for a few reasons.   The terrain is very safe and well built.   It is groomed and maintained daily.   The venue is staffed and has certified medical attention at all times.   There are bathrooms, water and food available.   You also have terrain specifically designed  to aid in progression of your skill set.   For example;  hit the foam pit, then take your trick out to the jumps.

Private Camps and Group Functions: We have the ability to design private group functions, parties, sessions, events, races, and just about anything related to cycling and our venue.   Guided Trail rides around the state of Oregon are in the mix as well.   All it takes is a phone call or an email (jaymo@nwsof.com).

Open Jam day clinics: This is a rad-donkulous opportunity to shred our well groomed park.   Show up and ride with an instructor.  A 3 hour private session with the NWSOF staff is only $199. Private Jams include up to 3 riders at no extra charge and are 3 hours in length. Riders can choose to learn a variety of skill sets in our private freeride park. Additional riders (after first 3) are $20/pp. This is a great way to get some learning done in a safe, private and meticulously maintained freeride park.

Email jaymo@nwsof.com for current availability if the following dates do not fit you your dream schedule.

    May 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, (30, 31 Cancelled)

    June 14, 15, 24, 25

    July 4, 5, 14, 15, 24, 25

    Aug  3, 4, 12, 13, 14, 15

The rest of the summer has been filled with classic multi day camps.   These camps are all inclusive, and include everything to make your time spent at the NWSOF perfect.   We offer transportation to and from PDX, great food, actual coaching (not just hanging out with pros), progressively designed terrain, cozy lodging, camp fires, demos, guest appearances and trail rides.   The list could really become endless.   Keep in mind, our venue is totally private.   There is no public access of any kind.   When you show up at the NW School of Freeride, it is just you and crew!   Our jumps and lines do not get chatter bumped.   The lips don’t get worn out.   And most of all, there is no waiting in line!  It’s kinda like your own private utopia of shred.
