Steamboat Springs, Colorado - March 10, 2008. Come out west and race with us in the Rio Stampede at the Steamboat Ski area. Legendary climbs and aspen-studded single track await you for this test of skill and endurance. Race either 12 or 6 hours with a team or solo. Not in the best of shape, get your work pals together and race in the corporate division.
Now in its 5th year, the new format replaces the established Rio 24 hours of Steamboat. “We are looking for ways to get more people involved,” says veteran event promoter Katie Lindquist. “We believe the format change will attract a great field of competitors creating an experience to be remembered.”
Shaking up the endurance racing scene organizers say will allow participants to ride it all in one day!
“The only change from the 24 hour race is the clock,” says co-director Brad Cusenbary. “We are the same organizers with the same great sponsors holding this race at the same spectacular venue. Festive, faster and local, you can’t go wrong!”
Classes include solo, duo and 3-person as well as a corporate division. After the race an awards party will be held at the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, downtown Steamboat Springs. “We are hosting a huge prize drawing and category winner recognition ceremony as well as food and drink specials for everyone. With over $10,000 in cash and prizes, we guarantee a great celebration after a full day of racing and fun,” says Lindquist

I do not really understand how cutting the race in half is going to get more people involved. We used to be known as the toughest 24 in north america now it is just another 12 hour race…pretty lame if you ask me (and a lot of others).I geuss this is the route all of steamboat is going…streamlined and dumbed down for the m asses.

Regarding Sharkey. Since you don’t have to train so hard for all 24 hours of steamboat maybe you can work on your grammer. 12 hour races are bringing more solo and duo teams to these events across the nation. It allows 9-5ers the oppritunity to compete. 24 hours is hard to train for when you have a family and career. PS. It takes way more energy to hate than smile. Cheers.

Agreed…Man up and return the 24 hour race. Wah, wah! i work 9 to 5, i have a family, i have a “career”, i wear a skirt, blah blah! Join the club pal, training hard is part of racing regardless if its a 2 hour or 24 hour race. Ride fast and leave the wankers at home!

I’ve competed in several of the rio races in different categories including the the 12 hour division they already have. What is the real reason the race has been shortened? Could it be the new ski area owners (Intrawest)? Could it be the base area reconstruction taking place where the race is held? Could it be the base area homeowners that have repeatedly complained about the noise at 3am?
I’m just curious what prizes they will give out for the 6 hour category. Maybe the organizers will revert to the prize they gave out for the first year’s winners….a cookie. Literally a cookie.

jah,
maybe instead of correcting the grammar of another person’s thoughts you should spend more time on a bike. The 12 hour option has always been there and 6 hours just seems a little silly. There is no hate, all previous races have been great events thrown by great people. No i do not have a family (that is a choice YOU made) and i wish i had a 9-5′er. My career has me busy from about 7 am til 6pm so it is sometimes hard for me to fit training in as well, but on those days i just smoke some grass drink some beer so i get used to the dehydration and delerium felt in a 24 hour event. All i am saying is that it was always a 24 and now i would not be surprised if many people that came to race previously will pass because it is only 12 hours.
P.S.- please correct this and get it back to me.

I apoligize to sharkey for my grammer comment. I was not having a good day. It seems I’ve started a hate column. Anyway, I had competed at the first 2 at steamboat and many other endurance events. I wasn’t wah wahing about my situation. Actually, I don’t have a family, my wife and I travel and ride our ass off. I was just trying to say that these events are really hard to get going and alot of them suffer. Shorter events have seemed to draw more people. I also didn’t mean that they should have gotten rid of the 24 hour race. So again, I apoligize. We are all mountain bikers, we should all be getting along.
