ERGON TEAMS UP WITH BOULDER MOUNTAIN BIKE ALLIANCE

The Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance is a very involved cycling entity in Colorado. For 2009, Ergon is becoming more and more involved with causes similar to the BMA and the Valmont Bike Park. So, what is going on with Ergon and the BMA?

Well, on Friday, Feb 6, the BMA is having its Fourth Annual Gala Banquet in order to raise funds for trail building and group mountain bike events. Recently, Ergon’s Sonya Looney went to a fund raising event for the Valmont Bike Park, which is sure to be one of the coolest bike parks in the World!

Ergon donated 2 pairs of GX2 Carbon grips, 1 BD2 Backpack, and 1 autographed Team Topeak-Ergon jersey by Dave Wiens’ for the banquet’s silent auction which will use the money raised to fund the BMA and parts of the Valmont Bike Park. The Valmont Bike Park Fundraiser was a great place to mingle with other people involved with the cycling industry. Ergon was pumped to hear numerous people praise the grips!

Ergon is very excited about the Valmont Bike Park and to be a business partner of the Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance. Members of the BMA in 2009 will have access to some excellent Ergon deals. Join BMA to find out more! more >>

24 HOURS IN THE OLD PUEBLO DEDICATED TO DAVE WIENS

Epic Rides is honored to announce Dave Wiens as our dedication recipient as we celebrate a Decade in the Desert at the 10th Annual Kona Bikes 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Known to many in the world of knobby tires as “Wiensy”, Wiens will be the guest of honor and a speaker at the Exchange Tent Dedication Dinner on Friday, February 13th!

Dave, the consummate good guy of mountain biking, has been successfully representing the industry since the early 80s. He was most recently highlighted after his win at the 2008 Leadville 100 Race Across the Sky, which is arguably one of America’s most difficult endurance events. Dave rode Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong off his wheel while claiming his 6th consecutive Leadville win.

The Vanilla Gorilla, as he’s known by friends, currently resides in Gunnison, CO with his wife, fellow-mountain-bike-hall-of-fame inductee Susan Demattei-Wiens, and their three children.

Epic Rides invites you to kick off your Old Pueblo weekend on Friday evening with the Vanilla Gorilla and some of his friends as we enjoy a warm dinner prepared fresh by Blue Banjo BBQ inside the exchange tent and get to know Dave’s thoughts on the past, present and future of mountain biking.

admits one; the evening will kick-off with a social hour at 6:00p on February 13th, dinner and guest speakers at 7:00p (we’ll even tuck ya in around the campfire after 8:30p). Each ticket includes dinner, some drinks and casual Sonoran style entertainment.

Dinner limited to the first 150 people. more >>

A MEDICAL PERSPECTIVE

A Case of Mountain Biking Induced Wrist Injury and its Improvement by New Biking Technology

Arthur Audie Smith MD

University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville Tennessee

I have been an avid road and mountain cyclist for about 25 years. For the last decade, I have been competing in the XTERRA off-road triathlon series as well. Unfortunately, about 7 years ago, I began developing a severe pain in the lateral side of my wrist that at its worst would keep me from riding my bike. I soon had to give up any and all racquet sports such as golf, tennis or softball as well. On some days I was unable to play my piano and began to become very concerned that this would affect my work since I am an anesthesiologist at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Eventually, I was evaluated by several hand specialists whom at first found nothing to explain the pain. They then recommended an MRI. Dr. Anthony Allen, a hand radiologist at the University, found what is termed pisotriquetral osteoarthritis which is indeed a condition that can be attributed mountain biking. This should not be confused with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Dr. Allen, adds his comments: Audie’s MRI demonstrated fairly severe pisotriquetral non-acute arthropathy. The remainder of the wrist was largely normal. This presumed overuse injury (as well as a number of other wrist injuries) has been reported in bicyclists, but especially off-road enthusiasts, in the literature (1) . Further, its occurance appears to be more widespread than previously known.

Even thought I am a physician, I have great reluctance for trying medications or surgery unless less intrusive methods have been tried. I , therefore, attempted to get relief through physical therapy, chiropractic and massage. However, all were without improvement.

I also attempted to modify my bike grips by using softer grips as well as adding extra layers of cork ( even to my mountain bike grips), different padded gloves, longer travel forks, etc. again without improvement.

One day while getting my bikes worked on at a local bike shop, I saw the Ergon grips. My first impression was that the shape made sense but if the material wasn’t flexible, it wouldn’t help. No one in the shop had used them so they couldn’t give me first hand information about their effectiveness. I bought them anyway and was surprised that in my very first outing, I had remarkably less pain in my wrist after a 2 hour ride. Now that I have been using them for about 3 years, I do not find my bike time limited by wrist pain. I regularly do 12 hour mountain bike races( the Hill of Truth race) and continue with the XTERRA races. (over 50 total….so far)

Although, I am still aware of my injury, I have yet to experience the debilitating pain that was present prior to my use of this product. In addition to outfitting my own bikes with the Ergon grips, I also have given them as gifts to various friends.
