Mountain Bikers Fight for Access on Marin County Trails

September 9th, 2009 by Gregg

This is a really good news feature about mountain biking access in Marin. Pro Mountain Biker and Marin resident Mark Weir talks about the dangers of mountain biking in Marin and the troubles in trying to get equal access to trails for mountain bikers.

It is great to see our cause getting main stream press in such a format as the nightly news.

As a Marin County rider, I thought this video presented a pretty fair and balanced critique of the problems facing the local bikers. I’d like to add that if the Marin County Open Space Department would authorize the building of new, legal trails, overseen by environmental experts, which are bike-specific and don’t damage the eco-system, then this would be much less of a problem. However, the Open Space department refuses to let bikers build or use trails - an “all or nothing” approach that is ridiculous and doesn’t work. It simply forces riders to ride illegal trails, because the illegal trails are the only ones that are built to be fun and exciting for serious riders - most trails in Marin are wide, designed for hikers, and boring. Just my two cents.

This is a good win for mountain bikers. The media and public opinion are starting to look at us as a legitimate access group.

We are presented as the victim here subjected to booby traps. Also, it presents our case well when the City won’t even hear the proposal for a pump track.

It’s a step in the right direction. Bravo to KTVU and the reporter Mike Mibach.
