Red Bull Rampage 2008 - The Evolution

October 4th, 2008 by Photo-John

The Red Bull Rampage is back and Mtbr is covering the event!

The last Red Bull Rampage took place in Virgin, Utah in 2004. It was the premiere mountain bike freeride competition at the time and is probably most responsible for the slopestyle competitions that exists now. It looked like the 2004 event was going to be the last and I’m psyched for the Rampage to be back. Even though there are now lots of freeride / slopestyle events, there’s still nothing else like the Red Bull Rampage, where riders can create their own lines on a big open course of mostly natural terrain.

I made it to the Rampage in time for Friday practice. The 2008 Red Bull Rampage Evolution course is in a completely new location. It’s still near Virgin, but it covers a lot more area than the old course and has more man-made slopestyle-type features. Riders have been testing the cliffs, monster jumps, and drops, looking for their lines, and putting on a big, though somewhat careful show. Today there are supposed to be two rounds of qualifiying and the serious riding will start. It should be awesome.

There’s one potential problem. A huge storm is moving in. It’s supposed to bring lots of rain and wind, and possibly even some snow. It’s raining as I write this. I’m not sure what the weather will mean for the competition. But I’ll be out there to find out.

Spread the word about the Mtbr.com Red Bull Rampage coverage and make sure to check back for more photos and news!

Glad you like it so far, Adam. I have hundreds of photos that need to be sorted. I will make a huge post when I can. There was a rain delay on Saturday (look for my other post on that subject), so I’m out here shooting on Monday. Yesterday I wasn’t able to process any photos. I should be able to post a bunch tonight, though. It’s been a cool event and yesterday’s qualifying was really good!
