I am up at Snowbird Ski and Summer resort for the 2010 Specialized Global Press Launch mountain bike presentation. Yesterday I saw the new Stumpjumper, the new Epic 29er, the new Safire and era women’s bikes, and the new 27 pound S-Works Enduro. I also got to ride the carbon S-Works Stumpjumper and the Epic 29er. I’m hoping to ride the Enduro today. I’m not going to be able to give you all the details on the new bikes right now because I have another presentation to run off to. But I will leave you with some photos of new bikes and the event here at Snowbird.
Here are a few photos of some of the 2010 Specialized mountain bikes for you. Yes - there’s more. I will be writing a more in-depth article after this event is over.

Here are some more pretty pictures of the Snowbird Ski And Summer Resort that I took when I arrived. I’m more used to seeing it in winter and I expect it’s the same for other skiers reading this. So it’s probably fun to see what it looks like in the summer.

I have a question regarding the 2010 line: We’ve seen photos from Sea Otter of the 29er Epic. It’s an M5 Aluminium frame with a tapered head tube, and a custom fork. Will we see something similar with the 26er Epics? A 26er Epic Marathon full alu frame with an E100 fork is my absolute dream bike.

I have a question about snowbird. I heard they built some new singletrack in gad valley. I see it on the new map as well. How is it? I also heard they built a bike park to try out some of the freeride/dh bikes. Is that true? I also see on the new trail map a “sports park” what is that?

i’m wondering the same thing as josh, please give us some info about any new trail that has been added or is currently in the works for the upcoming events. i really would like to see some freeride or rippin singletrack up there.

BTW will there be any horst-link improvement from traditional specialized fsr config this 2010? say more efficient than ICT..?

Thanks for the insight, what about the 2010 Epic? Are there any changes there, even with the pricing? We have all seen the 29′er Epic, but what about the 26″.

Ok, I’ve got some answers for your questions. Sorry I wasn’t able to get them to you sooner.
1) Kevin - There’s a 26-inch Epic with M5 tubing but it won’t be available with the E100 fork. The E100 fork is only spec’d on S-Works bikes. Part of the reason is the tapered head tube. The only aluminum frame with a tapered head tube is the Epic 29er. The reason it has the tapered head tube is to stiffen the front end of that bike.
2) Daan - The answer to your first question is, yes - Truvativ is making a spider so you can use the XX rings with the Specialized S-Works cranks.
I’m not sure what you’re asking with the other questions, though. If you’re asking about the tapered head tube, it’s only being used on one aluminum frame, the Epic 29er. It’s being used on that frame to give the front end of that bike more stiffness while maintaining the same bar height as a 26-inch Epic.
They haven’t given us complete bike specs, although I have asked. But the press kit I have says the Epic can have “complete bike weight as low as 21.5 pounds.” That’s the best I can do for you right now.
3) Josh - new Gaad Valley singletrack - they just started it. They’re building it right now. Not sure when it will be ridable. We couldn’t ride it. I’m hoping it’s good because Little Cottonwood Canyon could definitely use some more singletrack.
4) derry - I’m not sure how to answer your question about Horst link improvements. They refine and fine-tune the Horst link for each bike. For 2010 they tried to make the bikes feel more supple. One of the things they did to accomplish that is add cartridge bearings to the Stumpjumper linkage to make it smoother. I’m not sure how it compares to the ICT linkage, though. My understanding is that the ICT linkage is a Horst link. It’s just being tuned a differently from the Specialized Horst link.
5) Colby - I’ll try to get you some Demo photos tomorrow. They have it here, although they have a separate launch event for that bike and didn’t really tell us about it.
6) Conor - The new S-Works Stumpjumper has 140mm of travel, front and back. It weighs 23.4 pounds “out of the box” - that is without pedals. I rode it and was pretty goddamn sweet.

Have the fork internals of the S-Works Epic E100 and Stumpjumper S90 forks changed from 2009 to 2010 ?
The Epic’s 2010 rear shock is labeled both Specialized and Fox. Is it the same rear shock as last year, only manufactured by Fox, or has the rear shock been renewed internally?
Will the aluminum models also feature a rear shock labeled ‘Fox’, or is it only for the S-Works biakes?

Is the front fork on the new Enduro using a 20mm thru axle ? Also, is that fork a Spesh fork or a Fox fork or a combo-fork ?

Can you explain to me what the difference is between the rockhopper and the rockhopper SL? I can see the SL frame is resembels the stumpjumper but is it lighter, is it better, are they both going to be sold? I can’t find a decent answer on the specialized website or on forums. Furthermore I question or the lineup in Europe will be different the in the US (as was last year).
