KONAWORLD (March 5, 2008) – Coming off an impressive 2007 season, Kona CLUMP riders Andreu Lacondeguy, Paul “Bas” Basagoitia and Grant “Chopper” Fielder automatically qualified for the 2008 Nissan Qashqai Challenge (NQC). The five-event series will take place from April through May at five different European venues with the Grand Final slated for London, UK.

In its second year, the series features urban mountain bike freeriding boasting a $250,000 prize purse for the riders who prove they are the most “urban-proof.” Based on last year’s results, the three talented CLUMP riders were among 15 competitors that automatically qualified for this year’s contest. “Bas” led the way for the CLUMP boyz finishing second overall (behind winner Darren Berecloth), while Lacondeguy took fourth overall and Fielder nabbed 14th.

The Nissan Qashqai Challenge 2008 will consist of five contests in Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the UK. With the help and feedback of the NQC riders committee, Nissan have made several changes to the 2008 format including the addition of Open events. By splitting the series into two Opens and three Challenge events, Nissan has opened-up the contest to a wider range of riders while also allowing the top-15 riders from the 2007 series the opportunity to focus on peaking for the final three Challenges and Grand Final.

During the first two stops in Milan, Italy and Madrid, Spain, 10 riders will be given the opportunity to qualify for the final three Challenge events in Munich, Germany, Paris, France and London, UK. In addition to those 10 riders, the top-15 of last year’s NQC overall ranking will join them in the final three Challenge events. In total, there will be 25 of the world’s best mountain bikers showing off their savvy skills as they eye the title of freeride champion of the year.

Course builders from around the world will work together to provide an individual touch to each of the events. Keep an eye out for new buffed-out tracks sculpted of dirt and wood. The courses are sure to set a new standard in the sport.

Migrating South - Darcy Heads to Cali for the Winter

It’s February. Normally at this time each year I am skiing or sitting in a cold, damp university classroom - but not this February. This February (thus far) has been full of sun, skateparks, bikes, and beaches. Why you ask? Because I’m in California!!!

image-011.jpg

I decided to escape the dreary Vancouver Island winter this year and come down to the land of lap dogs, bleach blondes, and vanity (yep, I’m in LA) to see if I could spend more time on my bike than I could at home (which is bound to happen because it’s too cold to ride at home).

So far it’s been working out great. I drove down with my friend Toni and we took a few days to see the sights and some friends along the way in Portland, San Francisco, and Morro Bay. Although I’ve done that drive a few times, I always forget how long it really takes. I’m dreading the trip home for that reason alone!

Anyways, I’m here now and I’ve been insanely busy since I first rolled in. I first went to visit my sponsors who are based out of Cali - Oakley and Etnies - and then began my mission. Ride till I drop!

image-02.jpg

The first weekend I was here my friend and I went to Woodward West. I’ve never been there before but I think ‘mind-blowing’ would be the right word to describe it! It was snowing like crazy up there, but thankfully we could ride indoors. I switched between my 26″ and 20″ bikes and had a lot of fun on the ramps and in the foam pit. I learned a ton and acquired a few bruises to prove it!

In LA, I have some friends with sweet hookups to skateparks in the area that are supposed to be skate-only, but somehow we are allowed to ride there! Because of that, I’ve been riding my BMX twice a day. So fun! My mountain bike friends all have “real” jobs so I’m going to have to wait until the weekend to ride trails…I can’t wait! I miss dirt.

Well, I have to get my day sorted. Let’s see. . .where to ride? What Mexican food stand to eat at afterwards? So many decisions!

Sending sunshine from California!
