Successful Interbike OutDoor Demo and Expo Reflect Resilience and Optimism of the Bike Industry

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - Sept. 29, 2009 - The Interbike OutDoor Demo and International Bicycle Expo, held in Las Vegas Sept. 21-25, wrapped up a successful week of product demos, launches, business meetings and events while reflecting the upbeat outlook of the bicycle industry as a whole.

“The buzz of business Interbike 2009and enthusiasm on the Interbike show reflected a resilient marketplace place determined to maximize opportunities in 2010,” said Andy Tompkins, Interbike show director. “Interbike provided a critical meeting place for more than 1,100 brands to connect with thousands of buyers, media, athletes and industry professionals to share ideas, garner business education and network as a community. Combined efforts of the entire industry made the show a resounding success.”

Interbike’s week-long trade event began with buyers and media testing the latest in road, downhill, cross-country, all-mountain, electric, and commuter-style bikes and accessory categories at Interbike’s Outdoor Demo, held Sept. 21-22 in Bootleg Canyon, Boulder City, Nev. Anxious to get the real product experience with 2010 bikes and accessories, overall attendance at the two day event increased over last year.

The attendance and enthusiasm of the dealers did not go unnoticed by the majority of exhibiting manufacturers.

Interbike Launches Revamped Web Site

Interbike Launches Revamped Web Site

The new design of Interbike.com highlights and expands on the site’s most-used features, and includes resources to help attendees manage time at the show

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - June 30, 2009 - Interbike today announced the launch of its revamped website, which includes expanded exhibitor resources, enhanced attendee show planning features and resources for the entire cycling industry.

The website has been launched with three months to go before the bicycle industry’s largest gathering in North America, the 2009 OutDoor Demo in Boulder City, Nev., September 21-22 followed by the Interbike International Bicycle Expo at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas, September 23-25.

“The new Interbike website is much more than a needed face lift - it truly enhances the user experience,” said Rich Kelly, Interbike marketing manager. “Primary goals of the redesign were to make the most widely used features easier to find and to provide richer and more in-depth exhibitor information and show planning tools so retailers can make the most of their time before, during and after Interbike. We also wanted to better integrate our social media efforts with our main website for a more interactive and community oriented experience.”

Interbike’s website now uses a contemporary design to highlight its most used features such as the newly enhanced exhibitor floorplan and directory, the events schedule and industry news. The homepage’s Product Showcase gallery links directly to the searchable Product Showcase itself, which features details of innovative products exhibitors will be debuting at this year’s show.

The Product Showcase and the enhanced exhibitor directory and floor mapping are part of the show’s new “Interbike Planner” tool. Exhibitors will be able to upload and enter detailed information about their company and offerings including photos, video and show specials retailers will be able to view while preparing for the show.

In addition, the revamped Interbike.com expands the cycling industry’s social networking with links to Interbike’s Twitter feed, Facebook page, Flickr account and YouTube channel. The Interbike Times blog is also prominently integrated into its homepage, along with news content from Bicycle Retailer & Industry News and news feeds from online bicycle news sites and advocacy partners. These homepage features make Interbike.com a central location for key cycling industry news, information and social networking resources.

New planning features on the Interbike website include:

  • A richer and more dynamic exhibitor directory
  • Enhanced exhibitor profiles with capability to include more company information, product information, images and video
  • Easier-to-use interactive floorplan map
  • A mobile phone optimized version of the website to allow easy access to the exhibitor directory and schedule from the show floor

Interbike has also expanded its online attendee resources to include a:

  • Password-protected area for attendees only
  • Detailed show planner to schedule and keep track of appointments, seminars and other events
  • Match-making system to help buyers find exhibitors offering products of interest to them.

Online retail attendee registration has been open since May. With today’s re-launch of Interbike.com, online exhibitor registration for Interbike 2009 is officially open as well. To register, please go to the Interbike 2009 Registration page. Registration is free to qualified buyers through August 19, 2009.

Interbike Opens a Portion of OutDoor Demo East to Consumers

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - April 6, 2009 - Interbike OutDoor Demo East, traditionally a trade-only event, will now be open to the public on Saturday Oct. 10 and
Sunday Oct. 11, 2009 at Roger Williams Park in Providence, R.I. The first two days of OutDoor Demo East, Thursday Oct. 8 and Friday Oct. 9, will be open to members of the cycling industry only. OutDoor Demo East

“Last year’s inaugural OutDoor Demo East gathered dealers and manufacturers for product demos, business deals and networking. However, we recognize these groups are just two of the three pieces of the entire cycling community mix,” said Andy Tompkins, Interbike show director. “Opening the last two days of OutDoor Demo East for consumer participation is a great way to incorporate that final piece.”

In addition to two new consumer days for product demos, OutDoor Demo East is contracted with GSD Event Productions LLC, a New England-based promotional firm, to produce the Providence Cyclo-Cross Festival, a USA Cycling-sanctioned professional and amateur cyclo-cross race event.

“Years ago we recognized Roger Williams Park to be, perhaps, the finest cyclo-cross venue in America. Securing this date, this venue, the support of this fabulous city and this partnership with Interbike, gives us a unique opportunity to create a really spectacular event,” said Richard Fries, marketing-communications director for GSD Event Productions. “Get your cowbells ready; this will be fantastic.”

The OutDoor Demo East event is still intended to be an important trade event focused on the needs of Northeast and Mid-Atlantic retailers and/or additional staff unable to attend the Interbike International Expo, held in Las Vegas. To that end, the National Bicycle Dealer Association (NBDA) will again bring its popular retail education Super Seminars to the event.

“A wide variety of seminars are being planned, with topics including sales, marketing, management strategies and industry trends,” said Fred Clements, NBDA Executive Director. “Each year the NBDA strives to bring compelling content focused on retailer-specific needs aimed at improving the bottom-line of all bicycle retailers. We look forward to doing so again for East Coast dealers attending OutDoor Demo East.”

OutDoor Demo East 2009 will run Thursday, October 8 to Sunday, October 11, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Roger Williams Park in Providence, R.I.

Interbike OutDoor Demo East is based on the Interbike OutDoor Demo held in conjunction with the Interbike International Bicycle Expo in Las Vegas and will include product testing, NBDA seminars, manufacturer technical clinics and networking events.

Interbike’s OutDoor Demo East Has Successful First Year

Retailers and exhibitors pleased with the energy, participation and organization of Interbike’s inaugural east coast demo-style even

OutDoor Demo East

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - Oct. 24, 2008 - Amid off-road and road demo courses, bicycle manufacturers, retailers and industry groups participated in two days of product demos, clinics and networking during Interbike’s first regional demo event, OutDoor Demo East, held October 21-22, 2008, at the Roger Williams Park in Providence, Rhode Island.”In hosting our first regional demo-style event, we had great support from exhibitors and strong attendance from east coast retailers,” said Andy Tompkins, Interbike’s show director. “Whether I was visiting a seminar, checking the trails or chatting with exhibitors in the expo area, attendees were pleased to see that OutDoor Demo East shared the same energy, festival-type quality and bottom-line value the industry enjoys and appreciates at the OutDoor Demo in Nevada.”

Presented by SRAM and Jamis Bicycles, Interbike OutDoor Demo East saw strong attendance from New England and Mid-Atlantic states, as well as retailers from Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin to name a few. Retailers from as far away as California, Florida and Oregon were also in attendance.

“Given the cost and time associated with taking an entire staff to Vegas for Interbike, I was pleased at the opportunity to attend OutDoor Demo East,” said Lee Rogers, owner of Philadelphia-based Bicycle Therapy. “It was valuable for the staff to test product and then meet up immediately to share feedback with each other. Between the demos, clinics and industry party, Interbike identified the most important elements of a demo event and created a great package that my entire staff could participate in.”

Brad Hill, owner and president of Goodale’s Bike Shop in New Hampshire, said his employees came back from OutDoor Demo East with rave reviews.

While only Hill and three of his staff were able to attend the 2008 Interbike Expo and OutDoor Demo events in Las Vegas, he was able to send 16 of his employees to attend OutDoor Demo East.

“Without a demo event local to the east coast, a fair amount of my employees would never be able to attend a trade event,” said Hill.

Preliminary figures indicate close to 700 retailers attended the inaugural event. The more than 60 exhibiting company’s booths, product displays, demo products and staff stretched across more than 60,000 gross square-feet of exhibit space in Roger Williams Park.

“We saw a lot of dealers we didn’t see out west,” said Steve Thomas, national sales manager for Jamis Bicycles. “It was good for us to get New England and Mid-Atlantic dealers under our bikes. They are an important market for us and they carry different categories and selections of bikes than western United States retailers do. We also brought our marketing and product development staff to OutDoor Demo East, so they could optain feedback from the attending dealers. It was definitely worth it for us to attend this event.”

Besides trying product from manufacturers like Cannondale, Felt Bicycles, Fox Racing, Giant, Mavic, Pedro’s, Specialized and SRAM, retailers also attended the Super Seminar series hosted by the National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) in the Roger Williams Park Casino.

“Holding our East Coast Super Seminars in conjunction with Interbike’s OutDoor Demo East was very successful,” said Fred Clements, NBDA’s executive director. “Dealer participation was incredibly strong with standing room only in all of our seminar sessions. It was great that Interbike and the participating suppliers brought the Demo to east coast dealers, and we look forward to partnering with Interbike next year.”

In addition to the NBDA seminars, Fox Racing Shox, Mavic and SRAM also offered technical product clinics to packed audiences during the two-day event.

“Despite very cold weather that affected attendance on the last day of the show, suppliers and retailers seemed to be very pleased with the event,” said Tompkins. “We need to get back to the office and discuss how we can make the event better. However, based on the feedback so far, it looks like the industry needs the event, so it will be on the calendar next year.”

Interbike Releases Latest List of Exhibitors for Upcoming OutDoor Demo East

Interbike Releases Latest List of Exhibitors for Upcoming
OutDoor Demo East

Show management, exhibitors and the NBDA ramp up efforts to provide valuable demos, clinics and networking opportunities for east coast dealer base

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - Oct. 13, 2008 - Interbike, producers of North America’s largest bicycle industry trade shows, today announced its latest exhibitor list for the inaugural OutDoor Demo East, to be held October 21-22, 2008, at the Roger Williams Park in Providence, R.I.

The current exhibitor list includes nearly 60 of the industry’s key bicycle, component and accessory manufacturers including Cannondale, Felt Bicycles, Fox Racing, Giant, Jamis Bikes, Mavic, Pedro’s, Specialized, SRAM, Highway Two, and Earth, Wind and Rider, among others. (The complete list of exhibitors is included at the end of this release)

The exhibiting company’s booths, product displays, demo products and staff will stretch across more than 60,000 gross square-feet of exhibit space in Roger Williams Park.

“Support for Outdoor Demo East continues to grow as manufacturers recognized the unique opportunity they have to reach east coast shop owners and staff who may not have been able to attend the Demo in Vegas this year,” said Andy Tompkins, Interbike’s show director.

Pre-show attendance information shows a strong concentration of regional buyers from Conn., Mass., Md., N.Y., N.J., N.H., Pa., and Va., with some buyers traveling from as far south as Fla., and as far west as Calif.

Exhibitors are putting their best efforts and product forward, capitalizing on the opportunity to meet with east coast dealers and buyers who may not have attended this year’s Interbike Expo and Outdoor Demo.

“For many years Specialized has shown our commitment to the industry by attending Interbike and Outdoor Demo in Las Vegas,” said Kathryn Grassl, USA event manager for Specialized. “We’re excited to extend this same commitment to east coast dealers by giving them the opportunity to demo our 2009 bikes a bit closer to home.”

Highlights from the Specialized demo fleet include the 2009 S-Works Epic (ridden to victory by Christoph Sauser at XC Worlds), the 2009 S-Works Era (World Champion Rebecca Rusch’s bike of choice) and Tom Boonen’s 2009 S-Works Roubaix SL2.

In addition to its demo fleet, Jamis Bikes is bringing a number of its show bikes from the Expo in Las Vegas. It plans to have no less than 40-50 models on display.

“Dealers often have limited time and a trip to Vegas to attend Interbike can be challenging for them,” said Carine Joannou, president and CEO of Jamis Bikes. “Outdoor Demo East is located in an ideal spot where hundreds of dealers are within a three-hour drive. We are pleased that we have an event on the east coast where dealers have the opportunity to see new 2009 product and test out the 2009 Jamis Bicycles.”

When dealers get their fill of demos, the National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) will present its Super Seminar series in the Roger Williams Park Casino, a restored 1896 Colonial Revival building. NBDA Super Seminars titles include The Retail Store Manager as Leader, How to Make ‘09 Turn Out Fine, Practical Methods and Systems to Increase Profits in Your Service Department, and Power Merchandising for Bicycle Retailers.

Mavic and SRAM will also offer technical product clinic during the two-day event. A highlight of SRAM’s 2009 line is sure to be their new Hammerschmidt transmission technology.

Providing a festival-like atmosphere, a DJ will be playing music all day and there will be a beer garden and concession stands for refreshment. On the evening of the first day, Pedro’s is sponsoring an industry networking party with free food and beer.

“Shop owners, staff and buyers who make the effort to attend Outdoor Demo East will not be disappointed,” continued Tompkins. “With the caliber of exhibitors and the effort they are making to connect with east coast dealers, attendees are guaranteed a valuable demo experience, top-notch technical clinics, and a great atmosphere for networking and spending time with the industry tribe.”

Just a few general comments about this year’s demo. First of all, I did not ride any bad bikes. The technology has advanced to the point that when you choose well you will get a good bike.Period. So the rest is just personal preference and what you want to use it for. Secondly, Bob is dead. They’ve got this one figured out either with good suspension design or good shocks. It just wasnt’ there on any of the bikes I rode (except one). Thirdly, because all the bike designs are so good, bike reviews often boiled down to component selection, bike set up, and sizing. And lastly, these are ride impressions, not comprehensive bike tests and I’m not the most observant person or the most sensitive to small nuances. I usually adapt quickly to small annoyances and differences and nothing really gets my attention unless it’s really different. This may be good or bad.

So with that, here it goes. I’ll try and be as tscheezy-like as possible and give you what you’ve been craving.

Day 1 Dirt Demo

Pivot Firebird

6” DW-Link All Mountain/trail

I was really looking forward to riding this bike. We loved the build quality, looks, and snappiness of the Pivot offering we sampled last year but were a little disappointed in the small bump compliance. I’ve since heard that a custom light-valved version of Fox’s RP23 has improved the Mach 5 considerably over what we experienced so assumed the Firebird would get the same treatment. As before, the fit and finish are top notch. The proportions and overall aesthetics of the frame are nice. Unlike others, I don’t find the bottom bracket area to be overly busy. All those CNC’ed pieces and anodized aluminum fasteners look pretty trick to me. Climbing was superb. It felt firm and efficient. Very little if any bob could be felt either sitting or standing with pretty much zero side to side flex while hammering. It felt light and nimble like a long legged XC mount. Here’s the knock. They set up the RP23 to get 1/3 sag and I let out air until I was getting closer to 40 to 45% sag and it still just wasn’t that plush. Sorry. I really wanted to love the 6” version of the Pivot but it skipped around on medium sized square edged bumps while standing on the descents also. To be fair I was still not getting full travel according to the rubber ring after descending but didn’t really dare set it for more sag. I’ve heard others report more plushness so maybe it was a setup thing. Wonder what a more linear shock like a DHX Air or Roco Coil would do for it. Also, I was the first person on this bike and the Fox Float 36 was a bit less than optimal too. In fact that was the case with all the Float and TALAS 36 forks I tried with the exception of one (on the El Guapo). They just felt kinda poopy and not that plush. Maybe it is a quality control thing… or perhaps a set up thing but I’ve set up plenty of Fox forks and think I know what I’m doing. I was getting proper sag and was running the compression damping all the way out (light)….. But still felt too firm.

I opted for the medium this year after my experience on the large Mach 5 feeling too big last year and the sizing felt about just right for me at 5”11.5”. I might’ve opted for a bit longer stem, but that’s just preference. The only other complaint I had with the Firebird was the ungodly loud chain slap. This bike was in serious need of a chain guide and padding on both the chain and seat stays. I never lost a chain but the noise sure was unsettling and unbecoming of a bike in this (or any) price range.

A reliable industry-recognized 4-pawl drive hub provides precision engagement and sealed cartridge bearings make for a smooth ride. The wheels require no truing as the hub is factory aligned and permanently bonded creating an extraordinarily convenient ride for today’s riders.

The TR3 wheels come in both carbon fiber composite and an advanced impact modified composite material. They are available in disc brake and caliper brake models. Plus, riders can personalize wheels by selecting from a range of vibrant colors. In addition the “Molded-In” color process ensures colors won’t chip.

“Our wheels provide long term value in a classic stylish look,” says Mike Thomas V.P of TAG Wheels. “The wheels are extremely easy to use, offer a great ride, and with MSRP starting at just $429 per set our TR3 wheels are affordable for any rider.”

TAG Wheels® will debut the TR3 wheels at Interbike in Las Vegas on Sept 24-26.

Distributors and Dealers are invited to Booth #6833 to see the new wheels and to learn more about TAG Wheel’s Special Interbike Incentives.
