Fall Classic XC This is the perfect weekend to wrap up your mountain bike race season with one of the best Cross Country courses of the seasons, a free post-event meal on Sunday at the Riverwalk Center after the Cross Country race, and no on-site fees. The Circuit Race will take place at the Breckenridge Nordic Center on Peak 8 on Saturday, with the hill climb Time Trial following a few hours later starting from Carter Park. Wildflower Rush Sets the Stage for Nationals

Golden, Colo.– The fourth stop on the Mountain States Cup landed in Crested Butte June 19-21, where the wildflowers were rampant around the freshly cut singletrack and courses, and racers braved the elements in their last quest to qualify for USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships.

The cross country race on Saturday started with pristine conditions for the 7.5 mile loop. This course was new to even the locals of the mountain, and gave racers a taste of what pure Colorado singletrack really is like. By the time the pro race kicked off at 2:30 p.m., the conditions drastically changed, making it a challenging effort for the most prepared athletes on the hill. Andy Schultz (Durango, CO- Kenda/Tomac/Hayes), Macky Franklin (Taos, NM- Transparent Racing) and Jay Henry (Avon, CO- Tokyo Joes) battled it out to claim, first, second and third within 11 seconds of each other, despite the slick singletrack that otherwise would have been a fast, non-technical course.

The pro women faced the same conditions for three laps. Judy Freeman (Boulder, CO- Tough Girl / Scott) put a substantial lead on the pack finishing in 2:30:44. Jennifer Gerbasch (Avon, CO- Dale’s Pale Ale / Spot Brand) and Kelli Boniface (Steamboat Springs- Moots Cycles) came in third and fourth with a 2:41:46 and 2:44:59.

This was the first year a moutain cross course was built on Mt. Crested Butte. It was well received by all the gravity racers and brought a larger crowd than in years’ past. Pair that with a brand new downhill course, and the notoriously XC-centric venue became one of the gravity favorites overnight. Petr Hanak (Winter Park, CO) won the pro men’s mountain cross race againgst Joseph Backus (Mesa, AZ- Factory Staats) in the big final. Thomas Tokarczyk (Durango, CO- Jamis Bikes) and Michael Buell (Aspen, CO- Team Geronimo) took third and fourth.

Course conditions for the downhill changed throughout Saturday and Sunday, but despite the slick, muddy trails, racers still put down fast times for the downhill on Sunday. Chris Boice (Albuquerque, NM- Yeti / Fox National) won the men’s downhill with a 3:41:36. Brian Buell (Boulder, CO- Team Geronimo) and Joey Schusler (Boulder, CO- Yeti / Fox National) took second and third.

The MSC Photo Contest continues, and new posts are arriving every day at the MSC Photo Gallery at pinkbike.com. We are waiting for the final submissions to trickle in before we choose the final winner, but tune in to the homepage at racemsc.com to see the winner soon. Photos from USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships can be submitted into the MSC Photo Contest for the overall.

USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships will commence in exactly three weeks, where the best talent in the country will converge to battle it out for the official stars and stripes. The courses are now set and marked for cross country. Visit www.solvistanationals.com.

The Mountain States Cup will take a hiatus for the month of July, but will return for the fifth stop on its circuit, August 7-9 in Snowmass Village, CO for XC, SD, MX and DH. For any inquiries please contact us at info@racemsc.com or 720-407-6142.

MOUNTAIN STATES CUP GOES OUT ON TOP WITH MSC NO. 10 FALL CLASSIC

Golden, Colo. – Bigfoot crew members teamed up with Maverick Sports to bring the 10th and final stop of the MSC race series, the Fall Classic, to Breckenridge, Colo. September 6-7. The top riders of the season contended for the last of the series’ points to come out on top. And at 10,000 feet, they did, on some of the toughest courses of the season.
Saturday’s Circuit Race took riders on a 2.5 mile power trip through the Breckenridge Nordic Center. The course featured fast singletrack descents and a few short climbs through aspens, leaving riders breathless and spread-out at the start/finish line. The pro men crushed the five laps in about 45 minutes. Brian Smith (Gunnison, Colo.-Trek VW) pushed the pro/semi-pro field with a 41:45.4 and Travis Brown (Durango, Colo.-Trek) and Benjamin Sonntag (Durango) came sprinting in individually for second and third.
The pro and expert women raced together. Jennifer Smith (Gunnison, Colo.- Trek VW) matched her teammate’s finish with a 48:45.07 win, followed by Kelley Mattingly (New Castle, Colo.- Rocky Mountain Racing) and Jennifer Gersbach (Avon, Colo.- Dales Pale Ale Sport).
Day two of the event sent riders on a 14, 18 or 28 mile loop through the raw backcountry of Breckenridge. The day was beautiful with blue-bird skies and no wind. The mass-start left downtown 10 a.m. sharp, up Wellington Road and turned onto the trails for an adventurous ride— up the aptly named Heinous Hill, down the shale-covered Little French Gulch, and through premier sections of the Blue River Trail. Many of the sections were reminiscent of the Firecracker 50 course in reverse, but presented an even more challenging race with longer climbs and more technical descents.
The racing was fast and furious with some riders coming in bruised, scuffed and torn up. A great weekend to end on. The pro men averaged just over 14 mph on the demanding course. Franklin McConnell (Taos, N.M.- Team Devo) came across the finish line in first with a 2:03:19.4 with Smith and Kelly Meglky (Pro Women Cross CountryGolden, Colo.- Trek VW) sprinting for second and third respectively a minute later.
On the women’s side, Smith, Mattingly and Gersbach carried over their results from the circuit race to score first, second and third again.
The weekend changed a lot for the overall results. Low race scores were dropped and riders put everything out on the line move up in standings. Consistent finishes all season long drove Jay Henry (Avon, Colo.- Tokyo Joes), Brian Fuentes (Boulder, Colo.- Waltworks/Fuentes Designs) and Mitchell Hoke (Colorado Springs, Colo.- Tokyo Joes) to the top three for overall MSC Endurance Pro Men. Gersbach, Mattingly and Erin Huck (Boulder, Colo.-Tokyo Joes) finished solid top three for overall MSC Endurance Pro Women.
Co-Motion carried it’s tradition of winning the Overall Cross-County Team title for its sixth year running by a mere 28 points over Feeback Sports. Team Colorado Singletrack came in third.
Bigfoot Production is already putting the 2009 race calendar together and hopes to have a tentative schedule out by the end of this month. A huge thank you to all racers who participated and all volunteers who made this one of the most successful seasons yet. Thank you to Grace and Kim, who kept the registration flowing; to Chris Cawley and his on-mountain crew who created and maintained our courses as fast as we were shredding them and moving on to the next race; and to Mike McCormack who carried the MSC Series the last couple of years with Bigfoot Production and kept the series jiving.
