KONAWORLD (Dec. 9, 2008) - Racing in his home state of Oregon, Kona-FSA Factory CX Team rider Ryan “Tree Farm” Trebon plowed through soupy mud, rain, the finishline and a few celebratory beers en route to winning the final race in the US Gran Prix of Cyclo-cross Series on Sunday in Portland. With the win, Trebon finished out the Series in second-place overall with 191 points. Trebon had a solid shot to win the overall Series title, but an unfortunate last minute slip in Saturday’s race cost the prolific rider precious points.

Greeted by unseasonable sunshine and hordes of cheering ‘Cross fans that lined the course Saturday, Trebon spent most of the Elite men’s race locked in a tactical battle with Cannondale riders Tim Johnson and Jeremy Powers. Heading into the final lap in good striking position for the win, Trebon slipped twice that paved the way for his competitors. Trebon finished third.

On Sunday, with rain turning the course into a swampy mess with thick, soupy mud making for classic Pacific Northwest ’Cross racing conditions, a determined Trebon avenged his mistakes from the previous day and absolutely smoked the rest of the 53-racer field, handily winning the final race of the Series. The win sealed a second-place overall finish for Trebon in the Series. Teammate Barry ”Really Big in Japan” Wicks took sixth in the race three minutes behind Trebon (seventh overall in the Series with 94 points) and Eric Tonkin cruised across the finish a couple laps back after a tough race.

In the women’s Elite race on Sunday, Wendy Simms battled through the greasy conditions to finish fifth in the 28-racer field. Simms took sixth overall in the Series with 108 points.

Another note: Kona Sales Rep Dale Plant finished third on Saturday in the men’s CX race.

The Factory CX Team (AKA Orange Crush) will head to Kansas City, MO. for the US National Championships this weekend.

A well-known place for Trebon.

Kona’s Trebon Battles In Boulder

- Second And Third-Place Finishes Keep ‘Cross Rider In First Overall, While Wicks And Tonkin Flex Muscle Too -

KONAWORLD (November 3, 2008) - By racing hard in Boulder, Colorado last weekend, Kona-FSA Factory Team CX Team rider Ryan Trebon is still number one. Competing in the fifth and sixth events in the UCI North American Trophy ‘Cross Series at the Boulder Cup, Trebon, who was not only battling the countries top racers but also a nasty flu-bug, took second and third in both of his cyclocross races to maintain his overall first-place series ranking.

Racing in warm, dry and dusty conditions on Saturday at Boulder Reservoir, Trebon kept pace with eventual winner Todd Wells for most of the race up until the final sandy “beach” section where Wells pulled away. Trebon played his cards right, maintaining second place ahead of Tim Johnson who was battling Trebon for the first spot in the overall series. Trebon’s teammates Barry Wicks took fifth in the race while Erik Tonkin nabbed 11th in the 67-rider field.

“He had the separation out of the beach section, and I kinda sat-up and watched Tim, because I was thinking about the series,” Trebon said. “There is a pretty big point difference after first and second, and I wanted to make sure I was in front of him to buffer my lead. Who knows what will happen tomorrow or in Southampton, but I would like to win the series. But this weekend I have to be more defensive than I would like to be, but as s*** as I feel I am happy with second place!”

On Sunday, feeling even sicker than he did the previous day, Trebon held on to third place behind winner Johnson. With the venue changing to Harlow Platts Park in South Boulder, the new course involved more grass, less sand and more rolling hills. Tonkin took eighth place and Wicks grabbed 11th out of 72 riders.

“My body just locked up with four laps to go,” Trebon said. “It was the same thing as yesterday, but I suffered more today. The last two laps I just suffered a lot.”

The final races of the series take place on Nov. 22-23 in Southampton, New York. Trebon is in first place overall with 270 points and Johnson is second with 260.

- Wicks, Trebon And Simms Show Power At Second NMBS Event; While Kindree Nabs Bronze At Pan-Am Championships -

KONAWORLD (April 7, 2008) – Making their mark both stateside and in South America last weekend, Kona Factory Team riders proudly stood atop the podium in Fountain Hills, Arizona and the Pan-Am Mountain Bike Championships in Venezuela.

Competing in three races last weekend at the McDowell Mountain Park in the second NMBS event, team riders Barry Wicks, Ryan Trebon and Wendy Simms all secured top-three finishes in at least one race. Kris Sneddon also competed and finished in the top-15 in all of his races.

In the first race of the weekend, the Super D time trial, riders attacked the seven-mile course that consisted entirely of sandy fire roads, loose washes and three significant climbs. Simms took third in the pro women’s category with a time of 18 minutes, 27 seconds. Trebon led the men, finishing third with a time of 16:20 – only 25 seconds behind the winner – while Wicks took 12th and Sneddon grabbed 15th.

On Saturday, Wicks and Trebon tag-teamed the technical short track course which featured “The Hill” – a steep, loose sandy climb that only a few riders were able to muscle up on their bikes. Battling with Geoff Kabush to the finish, Wicks missed first place by one second, while Trebon captured third a mere 25 seconds back of Wicks. In the women’s race, Simms (who is the current Canadian National Cyclocross Champion) rode in the lead pack for most of the race until a crash cost her valuable time. After an intense and exciting sprint to the finish versus Australian National Champion Dellys Starr, Simms took fourth; 33 seconds behind winner Katerina Nash.

“I looked over my shoulder to see where Georgia [Gould] was and I buzzed Katerina’s rear tire,” said Simms of her crash. “It was my own fault.”

In the final race of the weekend, the three-lap Elite XC, Wicks and Trebon started strong but didn’t have the gas to hang in the lead pack to the finish. Wicks took fourth place with a time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, 49 seconds, while Trebon finished the race with a flat tire. Sneddon held on for 11th place.

South of the border in Venezuela, Factory Team rider Neal Kindree represented Team Canada at the Pan-Am Mountain Bike Championships. Racing in a field of 30 elite riders on Sunday in the U-23 category, Kindree started off the hot race by getting trapped behind a pile-up crash within the first 300 feet. Not to be conquered, he spent the ensuing seven laps climbing his way up to the lead pack on a long, non-technical and dusty course. Kindree finished in third-place taking the bronze medal. He also automatically qualified for the World Championships in Italy in late-June.

“It was really cool to see all the competition and what was going on in the mountain biking world outside Canada and the U.S.,” Kindree said. “It was a unique experience for sure.”
