SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Nov. 11, 2009 - For the second year, Ellsworth Handcrafted Bicycles Inc. of Ramona, Calif., is sponsoring a Trade-In Program to help Trips for Kids (TFK) fund more mountain bike rides for disadvantaged youth around the world. Ellsworth customers who donate complete bicycles to TFK by December 31, 2009 are eligible for a $500 discount on an Ellsworth full-suspension bike or frame.

“The bikes Ellsworth customers donate to Trips for Kids will be sold through our Re-Cyclery Bike Thrift Shop, giving them another life,” said Marilyn Price, founding director of TFK. “The proceeds from the Thrift Shop sales help fund the Trips for Kids chapters around the world, helping them serve more young people in their communities. We are very grateful that Ellsworth has joined with us to make the most of this season of giving.”

Those interested in participating in the trade-in program can donate any fully-built bikes to TFK through any authorized Ellsworth Bicycles dealer. They can redeem their trade-in credit at the dealer location to use towards the purchase of an Ellsworth Bicycles full-suspension bike or frame, including the Truth, Epiphany, Glimpse, Evolve, Moment, Rogue and Dare. TFK will sell the trade-in bikes at its Re-Cyclery Bike Thrift Shop in San Rafael, Calif. The proceeds from these sales will help fund future youth mountain bike rides through TFK’s 66 chapters across the United States, Canada and Israel.

“Ellsworth’s trade-in program was a huge success last year and drew a lot of support for Trips for Kids,” said John McPartlan, Ellsworth Bicycles sales and marketing manager. “We’re excited that in the first few weeks of this year’s Trips for Kids holiday promotion we are experiencing such an overwhelming response from our customers. They are as eager to support Trips for Kids as we are!”

Trips for Kids Israel and Northern Virginia Chapters Meet in Washington D.C.

Trips for Kids Israel and Northern Virginia Chapters Achieve Heightened Cultural Understanding During One-Day Event in Washington, D.C.

San Rafael, Calif. and Springfield, Va. - May 7, 2009 - Eleven young riders from the Trips for Kids Israel and Northern Virginia chapters met on Monday, May 4 in Washington D.C. to participate in bike and cultural education workshops and a presentation about how embracing diversity helps to achieve success in life.

Though the joint bike ride initially planned for the event was canceled due to rain, the kids benefited greatly from their time together. Translators facilitated introductions between the two groups before they competed in a hand-off relay that fostered collaboration. The group then participated in a joint presentation about diversity in bike riding, a discussion comparing two mountain bikes and a hands-on discussion about bike maintenance. Each rider received a book about safe bicycling and tire levers donated by REI.

According to the local Trips for Kids leader Julie Childers, the Israel and Northern Virginia riders’ excitement about their cross-cultural passion for mountain biking made them eager to plan a meeting in Israel. “They started with a love of bikes in common, and they all learned a great deal, made some new friends and exchanged emails,” she confirmed.

The Trips for Kids Israel trip was underwritten by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington’s “Partnership 2000,” a program dedicated to creating relationships between Israeli and North American Jewish communities on an individual, organizational and community level.

Trips for Kids to Host 11th Annual “Brews, Bikes and Bucks” Party

Quality drinks, food and mountain biking celebrities make this event the most fun
cycling enthusiasts can have without being on a bike!

San Rafael, Calif. - Nov. 11, 2008 - Trips for Kids’ annual “Brews, Bikes and Bucks” party will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 at the Broken Drum Brewery (1132 Fourth Street, San Rafael, Calif.) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The popular event features local beer, terrific raffle prizes, delicious food and the chance to hobnob with famous mountain biking pioneers. Admission is free and all proceeds benefit Trips for Kids, the award-winning, Marin-based non-profit that has improved the lives of disadvantaged kids through trail rides and earn-a-bike programs for more than 20 years.

Now in its 11th year, this fundraiser has become a much-anticipated tradition. Mountain biking legends likely to attend include Gary Fisher, Tom Ritchey, Joe Breeze, Ned Overend, Scott Nicol, Jacquie Phelan, Otis Guy, Ross Shafer, Charles Kelly, Mert Lawwill and Chris Lang.

“Many of us take for granted the pleasure of getting out in Marin parks and wild areas and enjoying a bike ride. That simple experience isn’t available to everyone, though - especially to a number of vulnerable, inner-city kids,” says Marilyn Price, Trips for Kids founder. “Our goal has always been to help set that straight a little bit. This fundraiser lends a big hand by supporting our entire program!”

Bike-related prizes will be raffled throughout the afternoon. The grand prize will be a dual suspension Jamis Dakar XCR Sport mountain bike (MSRP: $1,475) donated by Jamis Bicycles. A silent auction will include other items such as a 2009 Marin Bikes Alpine Trail 29er mountain bike.

Advance raffle tickets are on sale at the Broken Drum Brewery and at the Trips for Kids’ Re-Cyclery Thrift Shop in San Rafael. Raffle tickets will also be available at the event. Ticket holders need not be present to win. All event profits will benefit Trips for Kids.

Trips for Kids Establishes First Overseas Chapter in Isreal

A community group in Israel gears up, taking inner-city kids
mountain biking through the Judean plains

TFK Israel

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Nov. 6, 2008 - Trips for Kids (TFK) today announced a significant milestone with the formation of its first overseas chapter - Trips for Kids Israel - Samson Riders Bicycle Club (TFK Israel-SRBC).

Located in Beit Shemesh, Israel, Trips for Kids’ newest chapter provides disadvantaged Yehuda Plains youth a chance to experience the joy and challenge of mountain biking in nature, something they would not typically be able to enjoy.

“The Samson Riders Bicycle Club is very excited to become part of the Trips for Kids family!” said Renee Halpert, communication coordinator for TFK Israel-SRBC. “Many children and youth from our region will reach new heights of success because of this important association.”

TFK Israel-SRBC was created on the foundation of the community group, the Samson Riders Bicycle Club (SRBC). One of SRBC’s exceptional programs, Riding for Co-Existence, brings Israeli Jewish and Arab youth together to ride, learn about each other, break down social barriers, discover new interests and respect the land.

“We believe that with the support of TFK, we can continue to expand this program to involve youth from these and other ethnic communities in the planning and implementation of rides for their peers,” Halpert said.

Across North America, and now in the Middle East, Trips for Kids chapters take low-income, inner-city and otherwise at-risk youth out of the city for mountain bike rides, which often turn out to be “the rides of their lives.”

A simple concept with rich dividends, Trips for Kids chapters have touched the lives of nearly 50,000 young people during its more than 20-year history. Trips for Kids’ organizes mountain bike rides to help youth have fun while gaining confidence, riding skills, a greater appreciation for the natural world and exposure to the lifelong benefits of exercise.

Each TFK Chapter is distinct, with different staffing and volunteer levels depending on the type and size of its program. Some chapters have been started by organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs, Police Athletics League and cycling clubs. Several have evolved from public and private non-profit organizations committed to serving underprivileged youth, e.g. charter schools, treatment centers and public health agencies. While the communities served by each chapter are unique, the youth share a common need - they are low-income kids facing an array of personal challenges.

Bikes for Kids Fundraising Events Raise $10,000 to Purchase Bikes for Children in Utah

Derek Parra, sponsors and University of Utah and Brigham Young University cycling enthusiasts helped this non-profit achieve fundraising success with its Dinner Auction and Red vs. Blue Time Trial.

SALT LAKE CITY - Sept. 24, 2008 - Bikes for Kids Utah, a non-profit 501(C)3 organization that annually provides 1,000 new bicycles to underprivileged Utah children, today announced the combined fundraising efforts of its annual Dinner Auction and time trial event raised $10,000.

“Bikes for Kids Utah had, yet again, a successful year,” said Debbie Reid, founder of Bikes for Kids Utah. “Whether it was through donating items for the auction, purchasing seats at the dinner or riding in the time trial up Traverse Ridge, we are so grateful to all the community members who came out and supported our efforts to provide new bikes for Utah children.”

Bikes for Kids Utah Dinner Auction
The Bikes for Kids Utah Dinner Auction was held at La Caille on Wednesday, September 17. The fundraiser had dozens of items for the 180 guests to bid on, including a weekend getaway at Snowbird Resort, dinner and brunch at La Caille, a private bike ride with Eric Heiden and a session of speed skating at the Olympic Oval with Derek Parra.

Parra, the first-ever Mexican American to win a medal in the Olympic Winter Games, spoke at the Dinner Auction about the confidence cycling gave him to pursue skating and the positive influence it can be in the life of a child who has the opportunity to own a bike.

“Whether it is confidence on skates, or confidence on a bike, learning something new gives kids the opportunity to be challenged and have personal success,” Parra said after he reflected on the confidence-building experiences he had on his bike as he was riding to his skating training sessions.

Parra continued, “I promised my daughter that I would buy her a new bike as soon as she learned to ride her first bike without the training wheels. The first time she got on that new bike, she rode it from Draper to Taylorsville without falling, a three hour ride. It really hit me that her first cycling experiences are preparing her to live a confident and successful life.”

Red vs. Blue Time Trial
To raise funds for Bikes for Kids, close to 80 cycling club and team members, alumni and fans of Brigham Young University (BYU) and the University of Utah (Utah) gathered at Traverse Ridge for a three-mile hillclimb time trial with an elevation gain of more than 1,300 feet and 10 percent to 12 percent grades in some locations.

According to Millisecond Sports Timing, which averaged the top 10 speeds of each university’s official cyclists, Utah cycling team won the team race with an average time of 18 minutes, 39 seconds. BYU’s club followed with an average time of 20 minutes, 13 seconds.

However, when including the schools’ fans and alumni in the average, BYU finished the race in 22 minutes, 4 seconds and Utah finished in 22 minutes, 21 seconds.

The Utah cycling team was awarded a $1,000 cash prize to help with its future racing efforts and BYU was awarded the O.C. Tanner Cup for the fastest overall time, including fans.

“As a cycling club, it was exciting to race against the team from the University of Utah,” said Patrick Davis, president of the Y Cycling Club. “We even had tryouts to select the 10 fastest members for the race.”

Joel Hsia, University of Utah cycling team president, was excited about his team’s success and the cycling support the event generated.

“For the majority of the team members, it was their first time on the course,” Hsia said. “It was great to have a change of scenery and exciting to race the BYU riders. This event really demonstrated the strength cycling has in Utah.”

Michael Romero of the Bad Ass Coffee Co. racing team faced Traverse Road as confidently as he hopes the Bikes for Kids recipients will approach the opportunity to own a bike. “Hello hills!” Romero said to introduce himself to his cycling challenge for the day. “My name is Michael. I’m here to conquer you.”

Romero started building his cycling confidence as a child. “I first learned how to ride on a bike that probably cost around 50 bucks,” Romero said, “If I can give a kid a new bike, helmet and lock for that same price, I want to donate what I can to make that happen.”

The next Bikes for Kids Utah event will be the annual bike giveaway scheduled to take place on May 30, 2009.

Marilyn Price’s vision and commitment honored
For Immediate Release

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Aug. 27, 2008 - Trips for Kid’s (TFK) founding director, Marilyn Price, recently received the widely-recognized Jefferson Award for community service for 21 years as the driving force behind the organization.

On the local level, the Jefferson Award spotlights ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward. TFK is a non-profit organization that provides mountain bike outings and environmental education for kids who would not otherwise be exposed to such activities. The organization teaches lessons in personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness through the simple act of having fun.

Through Price’s tireless stewardship, TFK has grown from her original idea in 1988 to a 64-chapter international organization which has served tens of thousands of disadvantaged, young people in the inner-cities. Most participate in mountain bikes rides in nearby parks and wild lands, while others learn bike repair and maintenance through earn-a-bike programs. Hundreds of adult volunteers say they receive as much from TFK experiences as the kids do. The San Francisco Chronicle and the local CBS affiliate station KPIX featured stories about Marilyn’s initial vision for TFK and her long-term dedication to its expansion and its mission.

More information about TFK and its mission can be found at www.tripsforkids.org. More information about the Jefferson Awards, administered by the American Institute for Public Service, a national foundation that honors community service, may be found at its web site www.jeffersonawards.org.

Increased Environmental Awareness from Salesforce.com Employees Benefits Trips for Kids and Underserved Youth in San Francisco

image0135.jpg

SAN RAFAEL, CA - July 24, 2008 - After months of riding their bikes to work as part of an employee-led initiative to help reduce their carbon footprint, salesforce.com employees raised $10,000 and chose Trips for Kids (TFK) as their charity of choice.

On July 11, 2008, a group of dedicated salesforce.com employees joined young people from Kung Fu Grocery - an inner-city, low income martial arts school, TFK volunteers, staff and Board members for a ride through the Tennessee Valley area of the Golden Gate Recreation Area to present the generous check. The group absorbed the fanfare and views, as well as showed their appreciation for TFK being selected as the program’s charity beneficiary.

“At a time when fuel costs are soaring, biking to work is an environmentally friendly, cost effective and health promoting activity,” said Marilyn Price, founding director of TFK. “Trips for Kids is thrilled to be the chosen recipient. This money will be used to take underserved youth on mountain bikes rides.”

Salesforce.com, one of the Bay Area’s leading high-tech firms specializing in Software-as-a-Service, found a way to benefit youth, boost employee fitness and make an environmental impact. Forty employees worldwide participated in the community initiative. Utilizing salesforce.com technology to log the miles employees rode, the Salesforce.com Foundation contributed one dollar for each mile. Salesforce.com has been a long-time supporter of Trips for Kids.

“I joined salesforce.com not just because of the company and its products, but also because of the Salesforce.com Foundation’s relationship with the community,” said Perry David Tennyson, a salesforce.com employee. “Growing up in San Francisco and being a cyclist made this the perfect opportunity for me to participate in. That salesforce.com gave one dollar to a non profit for every mile I rode to work each day made me extremely proud.”

Trips for Kids is a 20-year-old national non-profit based in San Rafael, California. Its programs give underserved youth a chance to experience the joy and challenge of mountain biking, while learning valuable life skills and an appreciation for the outdoors. There are currently 64 Trips for Kids chapters across the United Stated and Canada.

Trips for Kids to hold Youth Mountain Biking Pre-Conference Workshop at the 2008 IMBA World Summit

tripsforkids_logo1.jpg

TFK partners with IMBA to host a full-day conference for TFK chapter leaders and interested attendees prior to the IMBA World Summit

San Rafael, Calif. - May 14, 2008 - Trips for Kids National (TFK) today announced it is hosting a Pre-Conference for TFK chapters in conjunction with the 2008 International Mountain Bicycling Association’s (IMBA) World Summit taking place in Park City, Utah, this coming June.

The TFK Pre-conference is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2008, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Park City Marriott, and is for current TFK chapters and those interested in starting a new TFK chapter.

“Trips for Kids is honored to partner with IMBA at its upcoming World Summit,” said Marilyn Price, founder and director of TFK. “Many TFK chapters consist of IMBA members, and IMBA clubs are natural vehicles to start TFK chapters, so it made sense to meet together before the conference to share ideas and best practices.”

The TFK Pre-Conference Workshop will address how to start and promote a program, respond to challenges, use the bicycle as an education tool and guarantee the long-term success of an individual chapter. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 18, there will be a facilitated workshop for TFK and other youth biking groups.

“The goal of adding youth topics to the IMBA Summit agenda and including Trips for Kids in the session is to identify barriers, find solutions and ultimately inspire more youth biking programs around the globe,” said Mike Van Abel, director of IMBA.

To that end, Quality Bicycle Product’s Advocacy Director Gary Sjoquist requested that QBP’s sponsorship of the IMBA World Summit be directed toward making Summit scholarships available to Trips for Kids chapters.

“With more than 60 chapters nationwide, it made sense to use our sponsorship funds to help get these folks to the Summit,” said Sjoquist. “Kids are the future of mountain biking, and both IMBA and Trips for Kids are helping get kids on mountain bikes and out on the trails.”

The 2008 IMBA World Summit begins immediately following the TFK Pre-Conference on Wednesday, June 18, and ends Saturday, June 21. Price and TFK Chapter members are also participating in panel discussions concerning mountain bicycling and trail stewardship among youth during the Summit.

To RSVP for the TFK Pre-Conference, call 415-458-2986 or send an email to national@tripsforkids.org.

TFK’s Bicycle Thrift Shop booth sold merchandise to and formed
new partnerships with
Sea Otter attendees and participants

San Rafael, Calif. - May 6, 2008 - While attending this year’s Sea Otter Marketplace Expo in Monterey, California, Trips for Kids (TFK) made a profit selling surplus merchandise from the Re-Cyclery Bike Thrift Shop and met up with the bicycle industry to raise awareness of TFK programs.

“Because Sea Otter attracts a lot of racers, families and out-of-town visitors, it’s a wonderful opportunity to shine the spotlight on our local programs and our national expansion,” said Marilyn Price, founder and director of Trips for Kids. “I talked to several attendees who are interested in starting a TFK chapter!”

With generous product and monetary donations from bicycle manufacturers and organization supporters, the fourth year of attendance for Trips for Kid at the Sea Otter Marketplace Expo netted substantial proceeds. These funds directly support TFK programs which include daylong mountain biking adventures, Earn-a-Bike programs and 63 chapters across North America.

TFK’s attendance at the Sea Otter Expo also resulted in new partnerships for the organization. A professional photographer dropped by the booth and agreed to shoot photos for TFK on a pro bono basis. In addition, the authors of Adventures of the Great Chiweenie drew huge crowds to the TFK booth with an adorable canine companion. They generously offered to donate a percentage of their book’s proceeds to TFK.

The Trips for Kids Re-Cyclery Bike Thrift Shop is located at 610 Fourth Street, San Rafael, Calif.
