Boulder Cycle Sport to host World Bicycle Relief Grassroots Awareness event April 16

BOULDER, Colo. (April 7, 2009) – The lights will be shining bright on April 16 as Boulder Cycle Sport, 4580 Broadway – Unit B, hosts an after-hours event in support of World Bicycle Relief and its Grassroots campaign.

“This is a chance for us to give back a little bit to a great organization,” says Brandon Dwight, owner of the shop. “It’s an opportunity to get the fantastic Boulder active sports community involved in raising awareness about The Power of Bicycles and the impact a bike can have on someone’s life.”

The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with a chance to learn more about the program from World Bicycle Relief Grassroots head Katie Bolling. Then Boulder resident Kurt Refsnider will detail his Grassroots efforts leading up to and racing in the 2,780-mile, self-supported 2009 Tour Divide this June. Refreshments will be served.

“Hearing Kurt’s inspirational story as he trains for the Divide will be amazing,” according to Bolling. “While his event is obviously pretty extreme, it’s just one example of the types of fun things folks can do on behalf of World Bicycle Relief.” Bolling said groups throughout the country are walking, running, riding and taking part in other activities that tell the World Bicycle Relief story.

World Bicycle Relief was founded by SRAM Corporation in 2005 and is supported by many leaders in the bicycle industry. Siren Bicycles ‘Teams’ with World Bicycle Relief; Endurance MTB Brand Finds New Home in Tucson

TUCSON – (JANUARY 19, 2009) – Siren Bicycles, a boutique builder focused on the endurance mountain bike market, has partnered with World Bicycle Relief to field Team World Bicycle Relief-Siren for the upcoming season. The team will be aboard production softail Song SL bicycles, riding to raise awareness of World Bicycle Relief’s programs and mission.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work of World Bicycle Relief,” said Siren Bicycles founder Brendan Collier. “Siren is all about seeing the bicycle as a sustainable mode of transportation, and World Bicycle Relief is dedicated to providing bicycles in support of healthcare, education and economic opportunity.”

Collier also announced the relocation of Siren Bicycles to Tucson, Arizona. The location in central Tucson offers space for design and fabrication of both production and custom/semi-custom mountain bike frames, in addition to an upcoming “city bike” project focused on an affordable and sustainable bike design for urban use.

The partnership with World Bicycle Relief is part of the organization’s “Grassroots” campaign, in which athletes and teams support its work by serving as ambassadors. “Teams like World Bicycle Relief-Siren are out there every day, on the roads and trails, raising awareness,” according to Katie Bolling, head of the Grassroots program. “Using our logo on their jersey and with our educational materials, individuals and teams can speak knowledgably about our work in underdeveloped regions of the world.”

The team consists of Pro endurance racers Dan Brennan, Todd Carpenter, Brad Majors and Chris Strout, and amateurs Craig DeAmbrose and Stephen Janes. Between them, the riders have scored several top results in recent seasons, including a podium and several top-10s in the 24-Hour National Championships; national and regional wins in 12- and 24-hour events; and strong finishes in National Ultra-Endurance (NUE) races.

For 2009, the team will open the season at the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo, near Tucson, and will go on to contest national and regional races including select NUE events and the 24 Hour National Points Series.

Johan Bruyneel joins World Bicycle Relief Board

image0146.jpg

CHICAGO (May 29, 2008) – Johan Bruyneel, the most winning Sports Director in cycling history, has joined the Board of Directors of World Bicycle Relief.

Bruyneel is the mastermind behind eight of the past nine Tour de France victories, including Lance Armstrong’s record-setting seven straight yellow jerseys (1999-2005), and Alberto Contador’s heroic ride to his first Tour de France win (2007). Bruyneel is currently General Manager of the Astana Cycling Team.

“Serving on the World Bicycle Relief Board is an opportunity to give back to the world through something that has given me so much in life” Bruyneel said. “To the world’s poor, time lost to walking destroys much of their productive day. A bicycle represents a leap in efficiency that magnifies everything they do. We often forget that the bike is used for more than sport; for many people it’s an invaluable part of everyday life.”

According to F.K. Day, president of World Bicycle Relief, “Johan’s proven leadership and management at the highest levels of competitive cycling will help us accomplish our mission of serving the transportation needs of the poor.”

Bruyneel is a Tour stage winner himself, and has documented his winning formula in the forthcoming book We Might as Well Win. He currently resides in Madrid, Spain, with his wife Eva and daughter Victoria.

World Bicycle Relief was founded by SRAM Corporation in 2005 and is supported by many leaders in the bicycle industry. World Bicycle Relief specializes in large-scale, comprehensive bicycle programs by providing supply chain management, technical knowledge and logistics expertise to poverty relief and disaster assistance initiatives. To date, nearly 50,000 new bicycles have been provided as part of a completed program in Sri Lanka and several major current projects in Africa.
