BIKE EXPO a success right from the start

BIKE EXPO a success right from the start

• More than 5,000 international industry professionals
• More than 20,000 cycling enthusiasts on the public days
• Exposition focus: Urban Mobility, E-Bikes and Pedelecs
• Great response to side event program
• Exhibitors pleased with results

BIKE EXPO, the new cycling sports show from Messe München International, ended on July 26th, 2009 but already 2010 is the industry talking point as a result of the debut show’s positive success. Right from the start BIKE EXPO distinguished itself with a high level of international interest and the first two exclusive trade days saw more than 5,000 visitors from 42 countries taking in the latest product innovations and leading brand developments. During the weekend over 20,000 consumers attended BIKE EXPO at the New Munich Trade Fair, to find out about up and coming bike trends and to test the latest models demo tracks. With the theme “Cycling Trends for City and Nature” BIKE EXPO showcased 211 exhibitors from 25 countries over a total of 22,000 square meters of exhibition space, as well as 25,000 square meters of outdoor exhibits and event areas. Germany, Italy, Austria, the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan all had a strong exhibitor presence and visitors came from all over the world. A special spotlight at BIKE EXPO was on E-Bikes and Pedelecs, currently very much in trend. To cover the increasing demand as well as tap into new market segments, almost all large bicycle manufacturers now include E-Bikes and Pedelecs in their selection. Another hot trend the show highlighted was single-speed bikes, or Fixies as they are known, as well as city, fitness, and racing bikes, road, trekking, and mountain bikes. Components, parts and accessories were all featured strongly too and a number of tourism areas and associations also resented their latest cycling attractions.

Bike Expo Munich receives positive feedback

  • Prominent supporter: Lord Mayor Christian Ude endorses the new bicycle exposition in Munich
  • Preparations for the first BIKE EXPO in full swing
  • Website www.bike-expo.com available in three languages
  • Side event program to feature international music act
  • Three competitions planned as part of the Velonale

Munich, Germany, March 13th – Following the announcement of BIKE EXPO at the end of January, Messe München GmbH, the organizer of the new cycling trade show, has been receiving a multitude of inquiries. To date, the Consumer Goods Business Unit Team, also responsible for ispo winter, has received plenty of positive feedback – and not just from the industry. Lord Mayor Christian Ude is a prominent supporter of BIKE EXPO. In 2006 Munich’s Lord Mayor was honored with the “best for bike” award as the most bicycle-friendly personality of the year, and he welcomes the cycling initiative by Messe München GmbH.  “As a passionate leisure and day-to-day cyclist and in my function as the Lord Mayor of Munich I am very pleased that Messe München GmbH is launching a new significant bicycle trade fair in Munich - BIKE EXPO“, says Ude.

Meanwhile, the preparations for BIKE EXPO are in full swing. Exhibitor forms were mailed and the first booths spaces rented. The website www.bike-expo.com is available in three languages, German, English, and Chinese, and offers continuously updated information and news on the trade show. In addition, the project management secured a collaboration with Taipei Cycle, the world’s third-largest bicycle exposition held next week, which BIKE EXPO will attend with a special booth.

One of the biggest highlights of the BIKE EXPO will be the international BMX and mountain bike dirt jump contests. The world’s best riders are invited to show the trade show visitors their most spectacular jumps and tricks on a super-sized dirt course. These contests are just a part of the multi-faceted, unconventional side event program, which will lend BIKE EXPO its special atmosphere. It is planned to pack the Bike Expo days with a Junior Trophy, an E-Bike and mountain bike test course, cycling technique seminars and even more activities for pros, amateurs, and other interested visitors. The exposition project team is currently also negotiating with international music acts to plan a live gig that will heat up Saturday night.

The Velonale includes three competitions: Touring, a 40-km-long track for hobby cyclists; Renner, a 60-km-long trail for hobby racers; and Chrono, a 40-km-long track for individually timed and team timed racing (4-person teams) for ambitious cyclists. To date there has been a lot of positive response, which will likely culminate in the participation of several thousand cyclists at the event’s premiere.

BIKE EXPO – Cycling Trends for City and Nature July 23rd – 26th, 2009

BIKE EXPO – Cycling Trends for City and Nature

  • Premiere of Bike Expo in late July 2009
  • Preview of the latest bicycle trends
  • Public exposition with industry visitor preview days
  • More than 8 million consumers in Munich and vicinity

BIKE EXPO presented by Messe München GmbH from July 23rd – 26th, 2009 is a new, comprehensive platform for the bicycle market at the New Munich Trade Fair. With the theme “Cycling Trends for City and Nature” BIKE EXPO offers the latest trends from the bicycle industry. The concept includes industry visitor preview days followed by a public exposition. The exhibition space is designed particularly with industry professionals in mind, and divided into the subjects of E- and City-Bikes as well as Fashion and Components. Dirt- and MTB-Bike oriented consumers will find a specially designated exhibition in the outdoor and demonstration areas, complete with several extensive side event highlights, as well as a public cycling race through Munich’s East End.

BIKE EXPO is organized by Messe München GmbH’s Consumer Goods Business Unit, which is also responsible for a number of sports platforms, such as ispo winter, ispo china or the Running Order Show. This team is assisted by competent partners, such as PLAN B – organizer of the Sympatex BIKE Festival in Riva del Garda and Willingen, as well as the multi-leg mountain bike races Transalp and Trans Germany – will coordinate the side event program and outdoor expo, as well as service the mountain bike exhibitors in this area. Bike-event experts rasoulution organize the cycling scene get-together in the outdoor areas complete with mountain bike and BMX dirt jump contests, as well as an extensive evening program including DJ sets and live music. Last but not least, the sports marketing agency runabout will hold the ‘Velonale’, a 20-kilometer bike race for everyone on Sunday, July 26th, 2009, on the grounds of the New Munich Trade Fair, as well as a timed race for more ambitious cyclists.

Munich, a true cycling city, is predestined for a trade show with focus on cycling. The city lives and breathes the new bike culture: in addition to a well-established network of bike paths, the city and its outskirts also offer a multitude of bike trails for all disciplines and skill levels. Furthermore, Munich is the perfect trade show location thanks to its state-of-the-art exhibition center, optimal infrastructure, and extensive selection of accommodations in all hotel categories.

Industry Statements:

“The concept of a bike exposition, early in the year and focused on consumers is convincing. On one hand it accommodates our production cycle, and on the other hand we enjoy the contact to consumers. They provide us with direct feedback to our current designs.” (Peter Räuber, Maloja)

“The top trends for the near future are clearly e-bikes and dirt bikes. It’s great that Munich now offers the right platform these segments deserve,” (Thomas Buhler, Owner Radsport Buhler)
