Over $20,000 in Bicycle Art Featured at the 2009 Bike Art Spectacular November 7th in San Diego

San Diego, Calif. (October 21, 2009) Bicycle art from all over the world will be on display and for sale at the 2009 Bike Art Spectacular, a fundraising event for Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids. The event will take place on Saturday, November 7th from 6-9 pm at San Diego’s Quilt Art Vision Gallery.

Jennifer Garant, a well-known artist from Palm Desert, Calif., says: “I received an email from Dan of KBK asking if I could donate a painting for their art auction. As I started to read about Kimbelee’s life and loves it touched me very much only to go into full tears hearing about her passing in March 2008 from brain cancer. Every child that KBK touches with its bike give-away program provides these children hope in sometimes bleak situations. I do not think that there is anything more important than to give the gift of joy and hope. I love the saying: ‘No one ever dies as long as there is someone to remember them’. For me the question was not can I donate art but how could I not donate.”

The Bike Art Spectacular will feature bicycle-themed art from Israel, England, Australia, Canada, and the U.S. The art will be displayed and sold at the reception on November 7th. In addition, the reception will include a silent auction, door prizes, drinks and appetizers. Remaining art not sold at the reception will be featured in a special eBay auction from November 9-16.

The donated art will feature original paintings, limited-edition prints, hand-embellished giclees, sculptures, photographs, recycled art, T-shirts, jewelry and cards which carry retail values from $5 to over $5,000.

“We’re gearing up for a fantastic event, says Dan Gindling, President of Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids. “The artists have responded with lots of great bicycle art. It’s going to be a really fun evening.”

Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids to Host Bike Art Bash in San Diego; Foundation Calls on Artists’ Donations

San Diego, Calif. (July 1, 2009) Bicycle and art aficionados will get their chance to view and bid on great bicycle art at the Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids Bike Art Bash. The art will be premiered in San Diego at a gala reception in early November then auctioned on eBay. All proceeds will benefit Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids, which distributes new bikes, helmets and locks to underprivileged 1st - 3rd graders.

“Kimberlee loved bicycling and she loved art, so we’re combing the two to raise money for Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids,” says Dan Gindling, Kimberlee’s husband and president of KBK. “In just a couple of days of solicitation we’ve already secured about a dozen outstanding works of bike art. The Bike Art Bash is going to be an exciting event.”

Much of the art will be one-of-a kind original pieces and will include paintings, sculpture and art created from found/recycled material. Also, auctioned will be bicycle prints, posters, and jewelry. The KBK Bike Art Bash will be heavily promoted throughout the bicycle industry.

“We are calling for artists to help get kids on bikes by donating a piece of art to the auction,” says Gindling. “Their donation will not only help put smiles on children’s faces, but because KBK is a 501c3 non-profit foundation the selling price of the art will be tax deductable to the artists.”

The KBK Bike Art Bash gala reception date and venue is still being planned. The deadline for receiving art is September 15th.

For those artists wishing to donate to the Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids Bike Art Bash, please e-mail dan@kimsikes.org, or call (619) 692-1313.

First Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids San Diego a Huge Success; Will Grow to Four Cities in 2010

San DIego, Calif. (June 10, 2009) Not content with 150 children’s smiles in San Diego, Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids will expand in 2010 and conduct its bicycle giveaways in four cities: San Diego, Houston, Indianapolis and Boston. The foundation will team with the Boys and Girls Clubs in each city and plans to distribute 250 bicycles, helmets and locks per location.

“Going into last week’s event in San Diego, we decided that we wanted Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids to have a national reach,” says Dan Gindling, President of Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids. “Kimberlee rode and raced her bike all over the country, why not grow the event into other cities.”

Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids was established to honor Kimberlee Caledonia, a talented and avid cyclist who died of brain cancer in 2008. This past Saturday, 150 underprivileged San Diego 1st and 2nd graders received brand new bmx bikes, helmets, locks and cycling caps from the foundation.

Weeks before the event, the children were given the essay question: “What would you do with a new bicycle?”. Their answers were graded with the winning children awarded a certificate good for a free bike, helmet, lock and cycling cap. (Those kids who were deemed deserving a bike received a certificate no matter their essay answer.)

The San Diego event began with a bike build on Friday night, where 30 volunteers built 150 bmx bicycles. Final quality control was performed by Speedplay President Richard Bryne, and Dave Grylls, Olympic bike racer and Pan Am and U.S. National cycling champ. Then on Saturday, the giveaway began with each child receiving their goodies plus a bicycle riding safety lesson.

“It was a wonderful, heart-warming event,” says Theresa Davis, Area Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. “To see the kids beaming when they got their bikes was uplifting. We can’t wait until next year’s event.”

Says Gindling, who was also Kimberlee’s husband: “We will be getting photos and copies of the children’s essays up on the KBK website (www.kimsbikes.org) real soon. Some of the essays are funny, some sad, others poignant.”

San Diego, Calif. (May 26, 2009) There will be a lot of smiling faces at the National City Boys & Girls Club (in San Diego County) on June 6th. That’s when Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids will be distributing 150 bikes, helmets and locks to needy children in the non-profit foundation’s first bicycle give-away.

“It’s going to be so much fun watching 150 children get free bicycles,” says Dan Gindling, president of Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids, a 501 (c) (3) foundation. “For many of the kids it will be the first bike they can call their own. I think Kimberlee would be very proud of what we are doing in her name.”

Kimberlee’s Bikes for Kids was created to honor Kimberlee Caledonia, an avid cyclist who died of brain cancer in 2008. Kimberlee loved to ride bicycles and she loved to teach, so paring bicycles with children into a non-profit foundation that bears her name is a perfect combination.

- Safety and riding instruction from the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition.

- Tips on fixing a flat from Randy Clark, a well-known San Diego cycling coach.

- Free basic service for six months courtesy of numerous San Diego County independent bike dealers including the Bicycle Warehouse chain and South Bay Bicycles.
