COBB, CA – The first full state championships for high school mountain bikers took place on Sunday, May 17, at Boggs Mountain, Cobb, California, when 374 students from as far south as San Diego and as far north as Redding converged for the California High School Mountain Bike Championships, presented by Touchstone Climbing and Fitness.

“Once again these kids, and their parents, and the coaches leave me speechless with admiration. We now have more than 600 school kids competing in California high school leagues. The SoCal riders did just great, we can see there is a lot of talent already in that league. There is so much going on in high school mountain biking, but as the pinnacle of what we are doing, this event made me proud,” said League director and founder Matt Fritzinger.

New faces from the upstart SoCal League made their mark, getting all the way to the top of the results in some categories and showing that although the NorCal riders benefit from the depth and intensity of the competition they have created for themselves, the talent pool covers the entire state.

If the event had a theme, it was camaraderie. The intensity of the racing made it clear that everybody was riding as fast as they could, but the stories about riders stopping to help fallen colleagues, and the excitement for the success of others showed that this event was about much more than winning.

Apart from the state championships, the event at Boggs Mountain served as the final round of the NorCal series. The Drake Pirates team held onto the lead they had enjoyed all season to deservedly claim the Division I title, ahead of the San Rafael Bulldogs and Nevada Union Miners. “We made some adjustments this year to increase the commitment of the riders to the team. The kids adapated and it’s worked out really well for all our coaches. Right now I’m ecstatic and exhausted,” said Paul Chourre, head coach of the 34-rider Drake program, about 10 seconds before the kids dumped a cooler full of ice on him.

In Division II, the San Marin High School team finished strong to earn the title after a season-long struggle with Marin Catholic and the Monterey Bay Kingfishers, who took second and third respectively. “Winning was a goal for me this year, but I never really talked about it with the kids as I didn’t want to pressure them. We got so close last year, it was evident it was a possibility,” said Adam Nuyens, head coach of the 12-rider San Marin team.

The six-mile woodland loop through Boggs Demonstration Forest provided a broad ranging test of talent, suited best to the all-round rider with good bike handling skills. The trails were dry, the dust was up, and it was hot—somewhere in the 90s—for much of the day. The racing conditions were far from easy.

As they have done all season long, John Bennett of El Cerrito and the remarkable freshman Shayna Powless, an independent competitor, proved unbeatable in the Varsity division, although they were pushed hard by spirited rides from Nate Byrom and Christine Weir, both from Nevada Union. Both Bennett and Powless went home with the NorCal series win and the state championship. Another outstanding freshman, Bryan Duke of Salinas High, won the state championship and clinched the Junior Varsity Division I series with an impressive win, while in the Junior Varsity Girls, independent rider Ruth Winder took the series, but it was Courtney Crosta of Woodcreek who found herself on the top step of the podium for the first time this season after winning the state championship race. Andrew Taylor from the Contra Costa Composite team claimed the JV Division II series with a powerful ride that also sealed the state championship for him.

A great day for SoCal rider Peter Morris of the Newport Beach Composite team saw him win the Sophomore Boys Division II state championship, and is the first time, though surely not the last, that a high school state championship MTB title was taken home to the southern end of the state. The Norcal series winner was Carter Williams of Monterey Bay. Roman Brockley of Drake High won the Sophomore Boys Division I and state championship. Morganne Endicott of San Ramon Valley won the Sophomore Girls series, while Sofia Hamilton of Drake High became the state champion.

The Frosh category winners were: Isaiah Rapko of Berkeley High (Division I series and state championship); Herculaas Botha of San Marin High (Division II series and state championship); and Sofia Gomez Villafane of Los Gatos High (series and state championship).

SOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GETS VELODROME AND TRACK RACING PROGRAM

Cedar Glen, CA – Last night, with a 7-2 vote, the school board of Mountain Top High School approved the construction of the first ever high school velodrome and scholastic track program in America. The decision serves as a historic milestone in the main-streaming of competitive cycling in secondary schools across the state of California. While high school mountain biking has been picking up steam since 2001 with the formation of the NorCal High School Mountain Bike Racing League, track racing looks to be the next alternative for high schoolers eager for sports that suit their short attention spans.

“Mountain biking is an endurance sport and except for the occasional sprint finish, it favors athletes with slow-twitch muscles leaving young cyclists with the genetic gift of more fast-twitch muscles feeling devalued. I’m very pleased to see this new discipline brought into the schools,” commented Matt Fritzinger, director of the Northern California mountain biking program.

In what may draw some criticism, the velodrome will replace the astro-turf field and football program. MTHS’s Head football Coach, Don Boggs commented “I’m keeping an open mind here. After two losing seasons, I don’t get much say around here anyway. I’m also very impressed with the way cycling is addressing the problem of performance enhancing drugs.” Unlike professional football, which penalizes wealthy players with meager fines and has led to a vast abuse of steroids at the high school level, professional and amateur bike racers face 2-4 year bans from the sport.

School Superintendant, Jim Swift, said “I advocated for this as soon as I saw the cost-benefit analysis. A velodrome is going to cost $1.8 trillion whereas a stadium retrofit and new astroturf was going to cost us $1.9 trillion. That may seem like a small difference, but that’s actually $100 billion dollars. We can buy quite a few books and computers for that much money.”

Additionally, it appears that track racing will become a natural complement to the recently inaugurated Socal Interscholastic Cycling League that only includes mountain biking currently. Board president Quintin Easton commented, “I’m stoked -– we put the generic term ‘cycling’ in the League name because we planned to incorporate various disciplines into the League. This velodrome is a dream come true!”

Ride and Donate to the Fifth Annual Tour de Tryptophan/24 Hours of the Fullerton Loop

Help Save Kids From Boredom and Protect the Future of Mountain Biking With High School Cycling Programs

Fullerton, CA - November 25, 2008 - - If you’re in Southern California this Friday after Thanksgiving, come burn your Turkey off for a good cause at the Fifth Annual Tour de Tryptophan/24 Hours of the Fullerton Loop.

Presented by no one, this fund-raiser commences at noon on Friday and finishes at noon on Saturday. As it is a fun ride with no rules, you can start or finish at any time. Do one lap, go home for the evening and do another in the morning. Or ride your brains out for 24 Hours. Seventeen laps seems to be the reigning record.

YOU MIGHT GET A T-SHIRT

The Fullerton Loop is an 11-mile network of suburban trails that pass through city parks, horse trails, hidden pathways and creekside wilderness. Originally pieced together by Richard Cunningham of Mantis Bikes and Mountain Bike Action fame in 1983, hundreds of people ride and train on the famed loop every week. This 24 Hour event was conceived as a celebration of the Loop, an excuse to burn off Thanksgiving dinner, and an opportunity to support a good cause.

This year’s proceeds will benefit the SoCal High School Cycling League, which will bring cycling to Southern California High Schools in 2009. Former beneficiaries of the Tour de Tryp have included the Tara Llanes Recovery Fund, CHOC Hospitals, and various other charities. The SoCal High School Cycling League is not even aware that they are the recipient of upcoming proceeds, so therefore are responsible in no way for this event.
YOU MIGHT GET A T-SHIRT

The ride will start and end in the upper parking lot of the Courthouse in Fullerton at Harbor and Berkeley. You can show up at any time to donate $30 and receive the Ramones-inspired T-Shirt while supplies last.

SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League Hosts Cycle Fest 2008 Benefit Dinner

SoCal Interscholastic Cycling League Hosts Cycle Fest 2008 Benefit Dinner

Mega-Successful NorCal League Opens SoCal Chapter - High School MTB’ers Get Ready to Race! Seating is Limited - Act Now!

Toluca Lake, CA - November 10, ‘08 - - Saturday night, November 22nd will be the kick-off fundraising event for the Southern California cousin of the enormously successful NorCal High School Mountain Bike Racing League.

Held at the famous Ca Del Sole Italian Restaurant near Burbank, the Benefit Dinner will feature celebrity cycling speakers and hosts, a silent auction of impressive cycling and non-cycling related items, a fine Italian dining experience, and most importantly an opportunity to support the growth of a cycling curriculum throughout hundreds of high-schools in Southern California.

MEET MATT FRITZINGER

Founded in 2001 by Berkeley High School teacher Matt Fritzinger, the the NorCal League has grown to over 400 racers, at over 38 schools. The League provides resources for teachers, coaches, parents and of course the kids, to start their own Interscholastic Mountain Bike Team and compete against other schools in their region. “The success and support of the League in NorCal has been so great over the last eight years, that we’ve been able to really dial in our program as a template to get kids anywhere to be able to start Mountain Biking programs at their schools,” states Fritzinger. “We decided to expand our program South, and with the help of Founding President Quintin Easton have created the SoCal League.”

“We need people to come to this dinner to support, learn, and help expand our efforts to get kids riding bikes,” states Easton. “Our experience shows that the kids want to do it, and when we provide the infrastructure, they thrive.”

MASTER OF CEREMONIES GARY FISHER

Modern Mountain Bike Pioneer Gary Fisher will be the official MC of the night, providing quips and commentary of the various activities that will be taking place during the dinner and auction. “Having grown up racing bikes since I was a kid, starting a bike company when I got older, and continuing to ride as much as I can, I know the value of having cycling available as a sporting option for kids,” commented Fisher. “In the future they will ask ‘How did Bike racing become a major sport in the USA?’ the High School MTB league was what made the difference.” “

GUEST OF HONOR TONY CRUZ

Current BMC and former Discovery Channel professional racer Tony Cruz will be the Official Guest of Honor for the gala event at Ca Del Sole. “I’m so honored to be a part of this movement,” said Tony. “While the adult segment of cycling is booming, it seems to me that in general, the junior programs have not gotten the attention they need here in the United States. What the SoCal League is doing fits right into my mindset and future - creating an exciting, fun, positive outlet for kids through cycling. Come to the dinner and let’s make plans to create a thriving cycling culture for tomorrows Pro’s.”

CYCLE FEST SILENT AUCTION

A silent auction benefiting the SoCal League will be announced next week, and online bids will be accepted until the dinner on the 22nd, after which silent bids will be allowed. Make sure you are at the dinner to get the best chance on the best items while supporting the future of cycling in America.
