Every year just before the Sea Otter Classic, many bicycle manufacturers launch new bikes and products and lucky media outlets (like us) get to attend these product releases and pass on the information to you. More often than not, we get to ride the new hotness, too! Mtbr attended the Global Launch of a brand new carbon 29er hardtail from BMC called the teamelite TE01 29.
Although their presence in the US in stronger in the road cycling category (Cadel Evans won the 2011 Tour de France for Team BMC and perennial bike celebrity George Hincapie also rides for BMC Racing), that will soon change with bikes like the teamelite TE01 29. BMC has been making 29ers for a couple of years now including the alloy version of the teamelite as well as the full suspension speedfox FS29. BMC’s knowledge of carbon fiber is strong and a lot of what they learn from making high end carbon road bikes crosses over to making high end carbon 29er hardtails.
But the teamelite TE01 29 was built new from the wheels up utilizing 29er geometry developed by BMC themselves and many hours of computer analysis, durability and compliance testing on machines and riding (and racing) of prototypes. In regards to the BMC 29er geometry the bike features a short chain stay, low bottom bracket, slacker head angle than normal and a low stack height.
This new bike was developed with 3 main requirements:
The frame weighs 990 grams and is designed for 100mm travel forks. The All New teamelite TE01 29 from BMC will be available in the US end of May (it is an early release 2013 model) and will retail for $5499 (with XO spec).
The BMC teamelite TE01 29 comes with a 3 year warranty on the frame and if you register your frame online, BMC will extend the warranty to 5 years. They also have a crash replacement policy.
We have not yet ridden this bike, but will soon and we will update the information here with our initial ride impressions, so stay tuned!
