CLIF Kid® Announces Five Finalists to the Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs, August 27th at Madison Square Park in NYC
Creative Kids Reconnect with Outdoor Play in National Contest

EMERYVILLE, Calif., July 19, 2011 – CLIF Kid®, maker of organic snacks for active kids, announces finalists for the Backyard Game of the Year. Given that more kids play computer games than swim or ride a bike1, CLIF Kid asked kids across the country to reconnect with outdoor playtime by inventing the most creative backyard game. Kids and their parents from 43 states took the challenge. On August 27th, the five finalists will unveil their game at Madison Square Park in New York City for the chance to win a $10,000 scholarship at the Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs.

Kids from New York and beyond are invited to attend the Playoffs with their parents to play the next generation of backyard games and meet Julie Foudy, three-time US Olympic soccer medalist, mom and Official Team Captain of the Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs.

“I am so eager to see these games in action,” said Julie Foudy. “There is nothing better than watching my kids let their imaginations run wild during outdoor play in our own backyard, so I can understand how thrilled these kids and their parents must be to show off their creations in the heart of New York City.”

The five finalists are:
Alligator Tail by Sydney, age 11, Pace, Florida
Eagle’s Nest by Kiley, age 11, Meadville, Pennsylvania
Hoop Ball by Alex, age 9, Arlington, Texas
Nature to Nature by Joey, age 9, Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin
Sponge Ball Fill-Up by Sara, age 9, Plaistow, New Hampshire

“As parents ourselves, we are passionate about our kids having outdoor play as part of their everyday activities in order to live healthy, active lives,” said Jennifer Yun, brand director for CLIF Kid. “We were excited to see all of the great ideas emerge when kids were given the chance to tap into their imaginations. It was hard to pick the top five from the number of inventive and dynamic games, but we can’t wait to see the finalists and all the kids come out to play these games at the park.”

Event Details
The Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs will take place Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10:00AM on the Farragut Lawn of Madison Square Park, NY (enter the park at 26th Street and Madison or Fifth Avenue). The Backyard Game of the Year will be selected by a panel comprised of Olympic medalist Julie Foudy, Health Magazine’s Food and Nutrition Director, Frances Largeman-Roth, and Children and Nature Network board member, Brother Yusuf Burgess. Contest Details
Backyard game ideas were submitted online by kids ages 6-12 and their parents between March 23 and June 30, 2011. Based on criteria, such as the game’s creativity and the ability to be played in a backyard setting with

household items, five finalists were selected. These five kids will appear with one parent each at the CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year Playoffs to present their games. Each finalist will receive a Trek bicycle and a

Bell helmet. The grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 educational scholarship and the four runners-up will each win a $1,000 educational scholarship.
