CycleFest 2010 Another Hit for High School Mountain Bikers

NorCal League Generates $75,000 at CycleFest Fundraiser

BERKELEY, Calif.—The NorCal High School Cycling League raised $75,000 at its seventh annual CycleFest fundraiser, held at the Mill Valley Community Center, November 6. Once again the dinner sold out.

Vanessa Hauswald, executive director of the NorCal League, said “We are truly grateful to all of those who contributed so generously to help us reach our fundraising targets at the CycleFest. The funds raised are essential in keeping the League in step with the growth that we expect for the 2011 season.”

The NorCal CycleFest, which featured special guest Kenda/Seven Cycles rider Mary McConneloug and her pro racer husband Mike Broderick, was generously supported by a long list of silent and live auction donors and sponsors. Heading this list are Trek Bicycles, Specialized Bicycle Components, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Mike’s Bikes, Western Spirit Cycling Adventures, Fox Racing Shox, Clif Bar and Co., Shimano, Luna Sport and Ritchey.

The weekend’s festivities, comprising a gala dinner and limited-entry mountain bike ride with Mary, raised a total of more than $75,000 and were attended by over 250 people.

Highlights of the evening included Mary, a trained opera singer, performing some arias, and on the fundraising side, the live auction conducted by ex-pro racer for the Luna Women’s Team, Marla Streb, and the NorCal League’s Chris Spencer. Marla and Chris introduced a new fundraising initiative for economically disadvantaged riders, which – thanks in large part to the enthusiastic support of legendary bicycle builder Tom Ritchey – raised $20,000 alone. This will fund a full racing season for many high school students who otherwise would have been unable to afford the event entry fees.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who attended, and thus contributed to the continued success of the country’s premier youth mountain bike racing program.
