LAUGHLINTOWN, Pa. (December 18, 2008) – Speedgoat Bicycles, Inc., a leading Internet retailer of bicycles, announces the appointment of Don Belt as Chief Operating Officer. Belt brings more than 20 years of corporate management experience, including 15 years with ServiStar and True Value, and President/CEO of Internet-centric start up procurement service provider, MRO Direct. His first assignment will be to establish the management and operational processes within the company to support the scalability objectives of Speedgoat Bicycles.

“Don has a solid track record generating sales growth and developing operational excellence,” said Chris Currie, President/CEO of Speedgoat Bicycles, Inc. “We are delighted to add an executive of his caliber to the team and we look forward to his expertise and leadership as we focus aggressively on establishing more efficient processes and establishing scalability that can support the sales growth opportunities we see in the industry.”

Belt will have operational responsibility for Speedgoat Bicycles, reporting directly to Currie. He will be actively involved in strategic and financial planning, process analysis, information systems, and the integration of customer service and procurement.

Belt held prior positions as COO of Smitty’s Building Supply, President/CEO of MRO Direct, and Sr. VP- Sales & Marketing with ServiStar and True Value, and has worked for several other firms, including General Electric Co. Belt holds an M.B.A. from The Ohio State University.

    Well, that should be the end of Speedgoat as we know them. Nothing like bringing in a non-cycling industry guy and expecting them to understand the nuances of such a niche marketplace. Oh well, all the best to Chris, Beth & Co. hopefully the decision process will not impact the world class service that Speedgoat has developed over the years.

    Well MRO Direct seems like a solid company I wonder how long he worked there as CEO/President.

    Seems like his experience in that company alone will stand to be put to good use at Speedgoat depending on the underlying reason to bring that type of experience on board.

    Yikes. This news release reminds me of my days in corporate hell. Seems like things have slipped a bit since their old webmaster left. They went overboard with the navigation “flyouts”, and it takes days to get a response to a simple sales inquiry. I’m sure Don’s a great guy. Welcome to the world of cycling, dude!

    OMG! This is the dude that was responsible for my father losing his job along with many others after his reign at Tru Value. They lost 130 million due to a “financial oversight” and Belt was the only corporate officer to resign. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to Speedgoat.

    How the hell is someone with no bicycle experience going to generate sales growth? It’s the sales staff who makes or breaks a sales opportunity, which is sad because upper management then takes credit for their success along with a higher paycheck. The only thing guys like this are good at is throwing around terms like spearheading initiatives and determining scaleability in the marketplace. Doesn’t seem to make sense to me.

    Well, lets fast forward two years. Don was finally let go, but not until nearly bankrupting the company. The Goat recently had to sell out to a company in Chicago. A little far from their original desires of relocating to Bend Oregon. I think Chi Town has better mountain biking. haha. At least the current employees will be able to find better opportunities than Speedgoat, since everyone (except Belt and the Curries) who worked there are incredibly talented and underpaid. Nothings worse than a company run by some artsy, supposed intellectuals who think they’re better than everyone else and don’t make mistakes. Heck, poor Chris spent over a year cleaning up after this dude. He brought it on himself. This could be the end.

    As a former employee of Speedgoat, I can honestly say Chris and Beth Currie are the worst people I ever worked for. Anyone thinking of submitting a resume to for there new location in Chicago should reconsider. 5 people out of 12 left within a year because of their poor decisions and management style. Instead of paying productive employees a decent wage, they pay douchetards like Don Belt insane amounts of money to make horribly bad decisions day in and day out, while the rest of the staff is expected to live on $9-$12 an hour with crappy benefits. They screwed people out of their 401k plans and acted like it was Morgan Stanley’s fault. It was hard enough living on Speedgoat wages in a low cost of living region like Southwest, PA, but anyone relocating or living in Chicago will not be able to survive on their chump change, period. Nothing you do is ever good enough and they never congratulate on a job well done, because they are always afraid employees will ask for more money. Their pay scale would have been sufficient in 1989. They also view bike people as pot smoking shop rat slackers, which is why they brought Don Belt on board, which totally backfired on them, and they are now selling out. Working for Chris Currie is a joke. He is passive aggressive and doesn’t like to deal with anything, and sometimes says things like “I guess I’ll have to have my kids help out”. Meanwhile I was doing the work of 3 people. He is clueless and a terrible person to lead. Honestly, I would like to see them grow, but growth would never happen if Currie is still leading. It’s sad because this new company needs a leader and his past decisions should be a wake up call to bring somebody else in, and pay Currie his millions to get him out, so the new company has a chance. Chris is also the king of acting like he is smarter than everyone including customers, and talks about people behind their backs like a little school girl. If you want to over work yourself for little pay and live paycheck to paycheck, while the Currie’s send their kids to private schools and buy expensive dogs and have everything they desire at your expense, Speedgoat Chicago is the place for you.

    Don’t let his dumb appearance fool you. Don Belt is a very tactful businessman who put Speedgoat in a position that they had to sell out to a company who specializes in paintball guns and skateboards. Chris is doing what he thought he’d never have to by selling out. My best wishes to the real employees of Speedgoat that allowed the Currie’s to live their posh lifestyle.

Thank you Chris and Beth. Chicago is the ultimate launching pad! What a load a crap that statement is. You sold out because you had to. Chris could I get a bro deal on some paintball equipment? What a tool!

    I would just like to say that when Speedgoat WAS my LBS I always liked everyone I dealt with. That would be Dan, Rob, Bill, Justin and Jeremy, if any of you guys are reading this or care. They always treated me well.

    I most likely will never buy from the new “Speedgoat” again. Maybe that’s unfair, but it’s just how I feel about it.

    Thank you for the kind words Old Friend. I’m happy that you felt the service was good during the old days of Speedgoat. There was actually a time when Speedgoat was a fun place to work, and taking care of customers the way you wanted to be treated was common practice of the above mentioned fellows. Unfortunately, all of those guys left when Chris gave the reins to Don who squandered money on a new software system, which took Chris over a year to fix before it became obsolete. They had to sell out in order to keep the business going.

    The LBS feel of Speedgoat was gone, since Chris thought all locals were time wasters, which was far from the truth. Another tragic mistake. Personally, I enjoyed dealing with people face to face since it was easier to relay info. Speedgoat lost a ton of local business upon closing the showroom. Unfortunately, Speedgoat didn’t pick up new out of state customers as Chris anticipated.

    I would advise to shop where you can form the kind of relationship you had with Dan, Rob, Bill, Justin and Jeremy. Unfortunately, Speedgoat is now in the world of outsourcing and owned by a company that specializes in paintball equipment.

    I enjoyed having a shop in my hometown where I could find just about any part. If Speedgoat didn’t have it instock, they could usually source it within a few days. On my way to Laurel Mountain one day, I thought I would check out some new wheels for my road bike. There was paper on the windows and said closed for renovation.

    I peeked through the window and it was the same showroom throughout the entire 2 year”renovation” process. Too bad for them. Since I wrote them off, I have purchased about 10k in frames and parts. It might not seem like much to an aristocrat like Chris, but it doesn’t seem like people are buying high end bikes from them anymore. Back in the day, you would see Moots and Indy Fabs adorned with the trickest components on their recent builds, but nowadays the majority are closeout bikes and Signature bikes with weak component choices.

    Since then, I have been a loyal customer to both Dirty Harrys and Chain Reaction. I have also gotten better deals from both of those companies. It appears all the good staff from Speedgoat has moved on. Steve, Jeremy, Justin and Bill were incredibly helpful and down to earth. Too bad because they had a good thing going even though I never cared much for the owners, but their old staff is what kept me coming back. I see a great opportunity for a new shop to take their place. Speedgoat’s former location is for sale. It would be great to see a new shop open up!

    Man that sux….I always wondered what happened and why the “Renovations” never were completed. I will miss the Old Goat, cause, they knew all the high end stuff. There is a ton of obscure things in this sport that if you don’t have the time or just can’t keep up on it, you’ll never hear about it. The Goat had that knowledge, and were the only gig that had the big time stuff.

    I hope the employees the old one found something good to provide for themselves and their families if they had one. But thanks for shedding some light on the real situation.

    Speedgoat also mislead their employees by telling them there would always be a shop in PA. Some employees relocated a few months ago only to be told they would have to move or lose their job. One guy relocated from California with his family. A few guys even passed up other job offers, but if they knew Speedgoat’s real intentions, they would have moved on, but this shows how selfish the Currie’s really are, since they knew if everyone quit, their company would have gone under even sooner. Notice how they don’t even advertise on MTBR anymore. Speedgoat is a has been, and the high end business they did have has been taken by the other online companies who don’t make customers wait months for their new bike on account of Speedgoat never stocking anything. This new company is talking about a 40,000 foot warehouse? I guess they need room for all the sub $1,000 Focus closeout bikes flying out the door.

    I will say that Don did recognize the skill it took to sell people $6500 bikes over the phone. He mentioned a commission plan when he worked for an appliance company. They were paying a $50 commission for every appliance their salespeople would close. When Beth overheard this, she immediately got defensive and said “well go sell washers if you want” If Don’s former company was able to pay such a nice commission on products not even coming close to the retail value of a high end bicycle, it shows the pure greediness and lack of respect for their employees on behalf of the Curries.
