Nov. 26 Update – Riding with Steve Peat.

Do you sometimes feel that GoPro has a monopoly on the POV Camera market? They seem to have a lion’s share of the market because of their superior brand and and marketing power.

That’s not necessarily bad but every time I use a GoPro, I want to pull my hair out because a clunky user interface and a lack of a….hold on…video screen. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve shot video and it’s either not on or not aimed correctly. Also, every time I need an accessory for my GoPro or Contour, it’s another $50 or $100.

Well Drift Innovation is here with some competition to shake up the market a little bit. They have the new HD Ghost for $399 with:

  • A video monitor
  • Remote control
  • Waterproof up to 8 feet
  • 3 hour battery
  • An easy to use interface
  • WiFi

These are just a few of the features that jump out at us. But bring it on Drift as we love competition  to shake up this market. $400 is a lot of money to spend on a POV camera so us mountain bikers deserve something that’s slick and easy to use.

The previous Drift Innovation product we tried is the HD170 and we gave it a 4.5 Star rating here: http://reviews.mtbr.com/drift-innovations-hd170-review.  So it is a company that has experience building quality product.

We’ll put this one to the test as soon as it arrives.

It amazes that, with the ubiquity of touchscreens and other products whose user interfaces are slightly better than ones designed by a blind goat, that the GoPro has sustained its lead in the POV market for so long.

I let my computer science major friend try to change the mode on a GoPro camera without resorting to a manual. He ended up throwing the thing a mile down the road, its UI is so God awfully terrible. I have a feeling that giving GoPros to the Palestinians and asking them to set the date might have a positive effect on peace in the Middle East.
