Mtbr.com: When did Jenson start and how?
Jenson USA: Founder Mike Cachat was a shop rat at a local shop in Brea, CA. Building low-end bikes, doing chores, etc. His goal was to fund his MTB racing habit. He ended up starting a tune-up business, then began selling parts and accessories, which turned into Jenson USA in 1994 while Mike was still in High School. His hobby became a business and by continually reinvesting we outgrew 3 locations until landing at our current HQ in Riverside, CA.
If you are interested in learning more, we have a great company history at http://www.jensonusa.com/company/aboutus that tells a more extensive story. It’s a really interesting read, check it out.
Mtbr.com: How has Jenson changed over the years?
Jenson USA: As we have grown the most striking change I’ve observed is how valuable all the different perspectives are. We’ve been able to draw such a diverse group of employees with all sorts of backgrounds, passions, and areas of expertise. It’s impacted everything, product selection, marketing, photography and been a real benefit to us.
Mtbr.com: How big is it now in terms of employees, square footage, customer base? How fast is it growing?
Jenson USA: Our “new” Riverside HQ is 74,000 square feet. It is so amazing that we were able to re-locate immediately next to a great county park. There is literally singletrack a 2 minute ride from our front door. Customers can park in our lot and be on the trails immediately, our Riverside Will-Call Center is their trailhead.
Today we have 64 employees across 2 distribution centers, plus our Superstore in Corona, CA which is a full service local bike shop.
