“A few years ago, two buddies and I decided to ride on Mt. St. Helens, tracing a route ridden a week prior by an organized ride. We climbed up sweet single track from a parking lot on the south side, up the east side through surviving old growth stands and out onto the plains of abraham, on our way to the windy ridge observatory. What a beautiful and eerie ride. It was foggy all morning which gave the standing dead trees ghostly silhouettes. It was simply amazing all the way to the observatory, with the devastation still so evident decades after the eruption. Mud flows and patterned blow-down, as well as a clear look into the crater at the top and after the fog lifted. It took us about an hour and a half to climb up.” MORE >>

“In 1998 I did an AIDS-Ride style charity thing from Seattle to DC. I was in a troubled relationship with a girl who couldn’t fathom why I would want to pedal 3,000 miles over 48 days.” MORE >>
There are a number of factors involved in performing at your “peak” for the first competitive event of the season. For a number of cyclist, competing in the Sea Otter Classic is their first chance to show and test their off-season training. To be in top physical shape there are several things to consider, but warding off illness through the winter months should be at the top of the list.
The human body has 2 lines of defense to ward off bacteria and viruses. The first is the innate immune system which includes a variety of physical barriers to infection. The skin, saliva, mucous, and membranes of the nasal passages, lungs and gut all help reduce the bacteria and viruses that are able to invade the body. The second is the adaptive immune system, which is made up of cells that have a “memory” for foreign invaders. Whenever we get sick or receive a vaccination, these cells destroy the invaders and infected cells and in the process of doing so, develop a memory for the invading germs. The next time a similar infection occurs, the cells can respond more rapidly, lessening the chances of a full-blown illness.

When 65 members of the Northwest Festival Hosting Association convened in Leavenworth, Washington on a chilly January morning, changing the lives of 14 young people was not written into the day’s agenda.
With assistance from the Specialized Dealer Grant Program, local Specialized dealer Der Sportsman, and Repario (a Nevada based leadership counseling firm) however, the usual droll of networking and idea-swapping in Leavenworth’s Bavarian-inspired setting was trumped by tears of joy and the smiling faces of 14 children.
The Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. will once again be the Official Recycling Sponsor at the 2010 Sea Otter Classic. Since 2005, SNBC has been a part of the Sea Otter sponsor family and has grown to incorporate recycling into the partnership in the last 3 years. This year, along with providing quality beer to thirsty athletes and attendees, Sierra Nevada will also be offering an extra incentive for people to recycle while attending Sea Otter. Brewery representatives will be distributing “tokens” to people that are seen using the recycling bins throughout the event. Recyclers can then take their token to the Sierra Nevada booth where they can be redeemed for a prize! Both Sierra Nevada and Sea Otter value cycling as part of an active and healthy lifestyle and SNBC is committed to also promoting RE-cycling as part of a sustainability vision. Please enjoy one of Sierra Nevadas premium quality beers and remember to recycle your plastic beer cup!
