Interbike 2012 Closes With Record Attendance

Interbike

Mtbr attended Interbike and we had a great experience. After several tumultuous years of competition, venue uncertainty, Interbike seemed to find its stride.

The Outdoor Demo was hopping and the appetite for alternate-sized wheels was voracious.  29ers were hot, fat bikes were a hoot and 650b bikes were snatched up faster than Iphone 5s. It was hot for sure but hydration was easily available with cold drinks everywhere.  The rocky, desert  conditions was still a harsh environment for bikes but familiarity and experience breeds success as things flowed smoothly at the outdoor demo.  Folks knew where to go on the well-marked XC trails as Fox even marked all the ‘climb-trail-descend’ sections. Shuttles ran smoothly for the downhill course as riders didn’t have to wait long for the flatbed trucks to take them up the hill. In addition, Fox Ford Raptors buzzed around taking riders up the hill.  One thing upleasant thing that didn’t go away though was flat tires. Dozens trudged back in shame every hour as their tubes succumbed to the dreaded pinch flat.

The Lower Level

The Indoor Expo was exciting as well. The place buzzed with new products and new business. Folks were enthusiastic and upbeat about the coming year. A really welcome surprise was the basement area was hopping with activity. Normally a ‘slow zone’ for first-time vendors, the downstairs expo area seemed twice the size of last year and access and signage into the area was obvious.

Next year, Interbike moves into Mandalay Bay and it seems to be a welcome move. No one knows much about the new venue but it is familiar enough not to cause anxiety and it seems refreshing enough to get a change away from the old Sands Convention Center.

Interbike seems to have found its place in the new competitive landscape of manufacturer dealer camps, mini-tradeshows and Eurobike. Interbike is the premiere North American show where manufacturers and dealers connect to wrap up the season and prepare for next year. And for the bike industry, it is the place to reconnect and strengthen relationships.
