Kind Shock had a small booth hidden over by the electric bikes. They had some of the rear shocks and adjustable seatposts on display. I played around with their i Series (i950 & i900) of adjustable seatposts, and I was very intrigued with their engineering, workmanship and functionality of the units . They come in either a remote or on top of the seatpost (under the saddle) lever actuated versions. Rick of Kind Shock gave me a really in depth walkthrough of the units, and I was very impressed. They also had a seatpost and saddle on a platform, so you could try the units out. I really liked that it was infinitely adjustable, so you could stop it wherever you liked in its travel length.

Do you remember the first time that you rode a bike without training wheels? I do. It was summer and I was five. Early one sunny Saturday morning, Dad took the training wheels off my little red bike with his trusty Crescent wrench. Smiling, he said I was ready. I was pretty scared as he ran behind me, steadying me as I pedaled down the sidewalk. After a couple of ditched attempts, I was riding a bike “for real.” Excited and full of newfound confidence, I remember telling my mother that I was a “big kid” now.At X-Fusion we are taking our training wheels off as we introduce three brand new forks for 2010. Pastajet’s Interbike 2009 Top 5

It was another fun and tiring Interbike. The outdoor demo portion was hot, dusty and windy, and I felt more like dried parchment than anything. The demo day was extremely busy at the bike booths, and it was difficult to get bikes, especially if you had an agenda for specific models, so I took it a bit easier than previous years and spent more time at the booths speaking with the vendors. The indoor portion was huge and overwhelming as it always is, so I concentrated on the booths I thought were interesting or more towards my tastes and readership. I got to meet a lot of friendly faces, and got to have some face time with people that I only had conferred with by email. Long days, sore feet and a tired back were the norm while sprinting around the vast Sands convention center.

Here were 5 of my top picks from the show, ones that I thought were innovative for the coming year.

Bike - Yeti ASR 5 C

The ASR 5 (5 inch suspension) is a brand new bike for Yeti, and this was the first time I had seen this model. The ASR 5 comes in an aluminum version, and a full carbon version, which is what I tested. The moment I started pedaling this bike, I felt its instant acceleration and laser like steering and handling. Its suspension was very compliant, and the directional rigidity of the carbon material was paramount in the feel of the bike.

I found myself sitting in almost all the terrain the XC loops of Boulder City had to offer, and was amazed at how well the suspension just sort of floated along the undulations and rocky sections of the trail. This did not feel like a 5 inch travel bike. On one of the very steep and very loose climbs the bike went up it effortlessly, and needed very little pedaling to get to the top. This is an excellent bike, that has a carefully thought out suspension system, with an incredible amount of compliancy. It is very neutral, climbs like a demon and makes the most of the carbon material’s directional rigidity and vibration damping qualities.

Syncros started out as a small, high end component company on Vancouver’s North Shore. A fresh approach to design led to timeless components that generated pride among those who had a Syncros part or two bolted on, and envy among those who didn’t. That was when a mountain bike was just that – a bike made for riding in the mountains. In those days, Syncros parts were revered for their beauty, strength, and light weight. Those were the days when a new seatpost was considered a major bike upgrade, purple anodizing was avant garde, and suspension was just a twinkle in the eye of a few motocrazy engineers.
