Formed in 1948, Panaracer began manufacturing rubber products for a variety of commercial and consumer applications. In 1978 we began to exclusively produce bicycle tires so we could carefully focus on producing the finest tires available today. Without a doubt, Panaracer is the last Japanese manufacturer still producing bicycle tires in Japan. We feel that our domestic production allows us to keep our quality control at the highest levels.
On staff we have seven full time R&D engineers constantly researching compounds, tread patterns and casing technology. Additionally, there is a emphasis on cutting-edge CAD tread and profile development. This advanced first stage of tire creation allows us to quickly advance new tire designs and product development. We are also constantly upgrading our molds and bladders, both important tools for producing reliable cutting-edge rubber products.
For the tire production itself, we use only the finest hand-picked raw materials to create our casings and compounds. When those material choices are combined with our patented technology, the end result is the finest tires that you can cycle on today.
In the 28 plus years of exclusively focusing on bicycle tire design, we‘ve created some of the most ground-breaking tires ever used by cyclists. Smoke and Dart are such an example of that history. These models left such an indelible mark on MTB tire performance that they are still in production today due to their continued popular demand and their trend setting performance. |

When are you guys going to start getting serious about updating your tires. Panaracer used to be my favorite tire but now it just seems Panaracer is resting on past technology and old designs. Panaracer really needs to get out there with a stop watch and prove there technology and tires are faster. Goofy looks and slick advertising might get me to browse your website for a minute but if your tires can not make me faster then my competitiors then I am not going to buy your tires. And that is the bottom line!

cowboy- While CG is acting silly in the promos, he and Panaracer are very serious about the tires. I have been privileged to ride preproduction samples of the CG XC tires and they are very good. The unusual tread design is both fast rolling and grippy. It is a different feel than other tires I have used and very confidence inspiring on the trail.
And, yes, I have clocked them. The CG XC is flat-out fast in all respects. Seriously.
As far as “older” models, I consider the Rampage, Cinder and Razor to be top line performers. They may not be the latest designs but that does not mean they are bad. Panaracer has a history of sticking with designs that work rather than making yearly fashion changes. This is an asset in my book, though it is not “sexy” in the marketplace.
One of the best kept secrets (unjustly) is just how much Panaracer sweats the rubber compounds. Unlike most other companies that use the same 2-4 compounds for most of their models, Panaracer tailors the rubber to best match the tire design and intended use.

Hi Cowboy,
All valid points. We’ve been so focused on other types of cycling tires we’ve admittedly let the MTB side get a little long in the tooth. As Shiggy said very well, under the silliness is some very serious consideration on tires, casings, compounds, treads, and all things related going on. And we are now serious about updating the MTB side. These 2 new CG treads are just the beginning. Expect 2-4 more MTB offerings per year for the next several years. While not a lot, we do focus on quality, not quantity. Give us just a little time and hopefully we’ll reward your patience with tires you’ll be happy riding. Either way, we’re all ears. Let us hear about it.

I’ve got to agree with Shiggy about solid product without the hype. I keep coming back to Panaracer, and my current favorite do it all 29er tire is the Fire XC (IRD, but made by Panny).
I’d love to see a CG XC, CG 235, and Racer in 29er sizes. Just never felt the love for the Rampage. A fine tire, but no magic for me, so hoping for some fresh stuff in 29er sizes.

The Rampage 29er tire is the best all around 29er tire out there. The best thing about them? The side walls last just as long as the tread. You can’t say this about Maxxis and WTB who have more tire choices, but you will have to buy tires every two months with them. I do agree that I would like to see more 29er mountain tire choices. Just my thoughts.

What’ the current the mtb tire industry thinking on rear/front specific tires these days? I just got around to trying some brand X tires configured this way and it really seem to make a difference, although most riders don’t do this anymore. I don’t think Panaracer ever did front/rear specific. Is it worth a new look?
