Just In: Cysco Cycles 650b Ti Hardtail

27.5

Mtbr first learned about Cysco Cycles and Richie Moore back at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) in Austin back in 2011. One of the standout features of his Lefty-equipped 29er that we featured was the interesting shaped tubes that had a “twist” to them. Fast forward a couple of years and Richie is still innovating, this time with a 650b titanium hardtail that was custom built for an employee’s wife. She is an endurance racer who understands and appreciates the benefits of 29ers, but wants something that is a bit more nimble for the relatively tight and technical singletrack found in Cysco’s native Tennessee trails. At 5’3″, she also happens to be on the short side.

Thus, the opportunity to build a 650b for a devoted customer arose. It also gave Cysco the chance to showcase a bunch of exciting new 650b/27.5″ products just hitting the market for 2013. Cysco Cycles builds with both steel and titanium, but Ti is definitely their forté. Chris Williams from Cysco Cycles explains the tubeset choice: “Each frame we build has tubing specifically selected for the individual rider and their riding style, however, for this frame Richie picked a tubeset that was a little beefier since we wanted to accommodate a wider range of people for demo rides.

Chris goes on to explain the geometry setup, “In regards to the geometry…we wanted the bike to handle as close to a 26″ frame as possible while still taking advantage of the increased rollover capability of the 27.5″ wheel.” The geometry of this custom frame is:

  • 70.5 degree head tube angle
  • 73.5 degree seat tube angle
  • 430mm (16.9″) chainstays
  • 105mm (4.1″) head tube
  • 555mm (21.85″) effective top tube
  • 55mm (2.17″) bottom bracket drop

Our hand measurement for the BB height shows about 12.25 inches. The distinctive top tube keeps the Cysco style with a diamond shape made to increase lateral and vertical stiffness. The seatstays are curved to add a bit of compliance.

The impressive build of this bike features:

  • Industry Nine new Torch hubs laced to ultra-light prototype rims
  • Cysco built Ti stem with 100mm length/6 degree rise
  • ENVE carbon bar/seatpost
  • SRAM XX1 group with a 32t chainring up front
  • Pacenti Neo-Moto tires for the front and Quasi-Moto tires for the rear
  • Cane Creek 110 headset
  • Rock Shox’s new Sid XX 27.5″ tapered fork with remote hydraulic lockout

Frame price is $3,400 which includes the oversized headtube, full custom geometry, choice of dropouts (standard, rocker, slider, etc.), shaped seat/chainstays, and choice of bottom bracket shell (PF30, BB30, or standard). In addition, the bike shown here has blasted panels which run $150 and the shaped top tube which is an extra $100. The titanium stem runs $335 which includes custom length and angle.
