Cameras Interbike

The POV sport camera companies, such as GorPro, Drift Innovations, Contour and Replay have had the market to themselves, but the big boy’s, including JVC and Sony are stepping into fold. JVC had their new ADIXXION GC-XA1 video camera on display at Interbike, and the featured laden 5MP camera has integrated Wi-Fi, a waterproof and shockproof body, video resolutions up to 1080p, and a LCD view screen. I am still not sure where the strange name came from; perhaps it’s a play on XX Addiction?

The rugged and wearable full HD video camcorder weighs 126 grams/4.5 oz including battery, and measure 74mm x 53mm x 35mm (2.9″ x 2.1″ x 1.4″) in size. The GC-XA1 retails for $349, and the kit includes the camera, two lens protectors, LCD protective film, USB cable, rechargeable battery, goggle and flexible mount.

The GC-XA1 is a POV (point of view) high-definition sports camera, which has a 5 megapixel CMOS sensor, and an ultra-wide 170° viewing angle fixed focus lens, that has a 5x digital zoom. It utilizes a Digital Image Stabilizer to reduce shaky footage and Rolling Shutter Cancellation to counteract the image distortion from the CMOS sensors panning and movement during recording. It can record 5MP video footage in 1080p, 960p, 720p and standard formats, and 5MP digital still photos. It records data onto a SDHC (up to 64GB in size), and is powered with an internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery that gives 1.2-1.8 hours of recording time (depending on resolution). It has ports for a micro USB for computer connection and recharging, and a micro HDMI for live streaming to a TV or other source. They have designated the camera as ‘Quad Proof’, which means its dustproof, waterproof to 16.4 ft, shockproof from 6.5ft, and freeze-proof to 14°F. It attaches to its mounts using a bottom and side tripod connector.

The camera has buttons for power, record, zooming and menu interfacing, and a 1.5″ LCD for checking footage, confirming viewing angle, and changing menu settings. The GC-XA1 reminds me off the Drift Innovations POV camera, as they share many of the same traits, features and form factor.

The camera attaches to an assortment of mounts, including the included stick-on flexible surface mount (fits flat or curved) and the goggle mount, using its bottom and side tripod ports. They also have optional handlebar and roll bar mount. Soon they’ll have a marine case for diving to 40m/130ft, and a suction cup mount for motorsports, and a very trick twin shooting mount, which they had on display at the show.

The camera can shoot in High and Standard Definition, and shoot in various video resolutions, including 1080p at 30fps, 960p at 30fps, 720p at 30fps and 60fps, and WVGA at 30fps. Each of the video resolutions is captured at different bit rates, which entails varying recording times and storage requirements, meaning greater resources are needed for the higher usage formats. The resolution settings are altered using menu buttons in concert with an LCD menu that resides on the right side of the camera. It uses the H.264 video codec, AAC audio compression, and a .mp4 file type.

The camera can shoot 5MP JPEG digital stills, which I assume are at 1080p?

You can connect to a Wi-Fi enabled mobile phone and tablet that are equipped with an Android or iOS app for framing your shot. I am not sure if it will allow menu alterations using your smartphone? You can stream live video to a PC via mobile hotspot or Wi-Fi connection, and broadcast on USTREAM to a worldwide audience. Their Wi-Fi interface even lets you transfer movies to your smartphone or tablet while you’re in the field.

Riprese fantastiche anche dall’aereo, dopo che mi è caduta (ho rotto il monitor da 1,5″), la videocamera continua a funzionare perfettamente.
