Kate’s Real Food – Energy Bars

Nutrition

I’ve been hearing more and more about an all natural and organic energy bar from a brand called Kate’s Real Food. They were at the Outerbike demo/festival last October and the buzz has been growing since. In addition, they were a bronze level sponsor of the Mountain States Cup series and they are also a partner of Mtbr advertiser BetterRide.net. Tammy Donahugh (IMBA Trail Specialist and Pro Freerider) is an ambassador for Kate’s.

The beginning of Kate’s started on the mountain. Being a self admitted “ski-bum”, she started making energy bars in her own kitchen to keep her going during the long waits in the tram line without having to break for lunch. Besides skiing, Kate is a climber and mountain biker, so she understood that people were tired of the same old “food-like” energy bars. She started sharing her home made bars with friends and those friends encouraged her to share the organic goodness with others. Fast forward a few years and Kate’s Mission is: supporting outdoor play & sustainable organic farming.

Kate’s Real Food bars come in 5 flavors including the Tram Bar, Handle Bar, Stash Bar, Grizzly Bar and my favorite, the all new Tiki Bar. Each bar is:

  • all natural & organic
  • made with real ingredients that deliver 260-360 calories
  • certified organic & kosher
  • tasty and energy sustaining
  • made in Idaho

The bars are 2.2 – 3 ounces in size and are perfect for throwing in your Camelbak or your jersey pocket. They pack between 260-360 calories and the main ingredients are oats, honey peanut butter and chocolate, except for the new Tiki Bar which is made from organic coconut, honey, mango and peanut butter. The Tiki Bar is also gluten-free.

They are a firm bar that is moist and chewy. They have a good balance of sweetness with just a light salty tone (noticeably less salty than other bars we have tried). The Tiki Bar is slightly more “crumbly” than the other flavors, so it might not be your first choice if you are eating while riding. The price ranges from $2.79 to $3.29.

We here at Mtbr HQ love Kate’s Real Food bars and highly recommend that you try them all! If your local bike shop does not carry Kate’s, they can be ordered directly from their website listed below. Try the 5 Bar Sampler Pack ($17.45) if you want to try each flavor.

From the Maker:
Tram Bars (and all Kate’s Real Food bars) truly do make your mouth sing with all the different textures and flavors. The good combo of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates keeps you skiing, biking, hiking, working, motor biking, snowmobiling, fishing, smiling, rafting, flying, diving, running, kayaking, hunting, horseback riding, or playing. . . for hours! Tram Bars keep you happy, and keep you going.

So, those are the origins of Kate’s Real Food, and staying true to our roots, we now have a company mission that strives to provide great food products made with ingredients from responsible, organic farms, and to promote playability for all. All for play and play for all!

Real Food. Real Energy. Real Good. Kate’s Real Food. Real people. Real Play. Real Living.

Kate’s brother is a good friend of mine, and I’ve been a fan of these for years. These are the best tasting energy bars you’ll ever try. Highly recommended.
