UPDATE: Lance Armstrong Withdraws from the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race

UPDATE: Lance Armstrong has decided to not race in this weekend’s Leadville Trail 100 according to a news article on Velonews. In that article, it states that Armstrong is still suffering from the effects of multiple crashes during this year’s Tour de France.

Levi Leipheimer is still expected to race the Leadville Trail 100.

Below is the original information about the Leadville Trail 100 from yesterday:

Fresh from the Tour de France, RadioShack teammates Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer will be racing the upcoming Leadville Trail 100 ( http://www.leadvilletrail100.com/ ) mountain bike race this coming Saturday August 14th in Leadville, CO.

Armstrong was in Steamboat Springs, CO this past weekend for the Ride 4 Yellow event (a “community-based mountain bike event benefiting LIVESTRONG and Steamboat cancer initiatives”.) He posted a few updates of the event to his Twitter account (@LanceArmstrong).

Armstrong is the defending champ, having beaten long time Leadville competitor and past champion, Dave Wiens last year. The course is one of the most challenging mountain bike races, starting at 10,500 feet elevation and climbing another 2,000 feet. It is considered the US’s highest-altitude endurance test. Armstrong’s record time last year was 6 hours, 28 minutes, 50 seconds.

For Levi Leipheimer, this will be his first time contesting the Leadville 100 and he has been seen tuning up his bike handling dirt skills recently at local crit races. Leipheimer placed third in this year’s Tour of California. One interesting facet to the Leadville 100 is whether or not Leipheimer can beat Armstrong (Leipheimer placed well above Armstrong in this year’s Tour de France.) For more discussion on Lance vs. Levi, read the discussion thread in the Mtbr Endurance Racing Forum.

Also a subject of much discussion, is whether or not Armstrong will ride a traditional 26″ wheeled mountain biker or a newer 29er mountain bike. He has been testing a Trek 29er very recently, again, according to his Twitter account (@LanceArmstrong). Read more discussion in the Lance on a 29er at Leadville thread in the Mtbr 29er forum.
