Pacenti
Kirk Pacenti is an influential guy. On our first day a the show, we saw a lot of 650B wheeled bikes. This new wheel size has gained a lot of acceptance over the last year thanks to Kirk’s perseverance. We also saw a lot of lugged frames using Kirk’s lugs. Kirk has been around the industry and is a key driver in the areas he believes in.

Here’s a Ventana 650B called the El Bastardo

Coconino Cycles
We sat down and chatted with Steve Garro. Steve was hit by a truck about 18 months ago and suffered devastating injuries too long to list. Steve has been busy building bikes and he’s been getting out on the trails with a hand cycle. Judging by the size of his forearms, looks like Steve has been busy.

Steve uses Fillet brazed construction to build frames. He brought a nude frame to display the quality of his work.

Renovo Hardwood Bicycles

These guys are set up in the booth just across from the Mtbr/RoadBikeReview booth and their bikes are very eye catching.
The idea of a wooden bicycle is not exactly new. In fact, there was even a recent news article about a 16 year old high school student making one on his own.
But this company, Renovo Hardwood Bicycles, based in Portland, OR has created wooden bikes that look simply beautiful. Not only is the bike visually stunning, the attention to deal is amazing, and the bike looks just like a regular metal framed hardtail or road bike, except that it is made of wood. The joints are amazing.
Wood is an interesting frame material, but can be heavy. But because this is a monocoque design, it is light weight (the scale with the road bike reads 17.75 pounds).
Here are a few more photos.

Celebrity Sighting
Thien (RoadBikeReview Site Manager) and Francois took this photo right at the end of the first day here at the NAHBS.
His appearance was totally low key and unannounced….he and Don Walker (organizer and main man of the whole handmade) just strolled by our booth and Thien jumped at the chance for a pic with his hero.
