New Niner Air 9 RDO, New Niner Seat Clamp, Inside the Niner Offices, Carbon Fork Coupon

29er News Video

The Air 9 RDO is a thoroughbred – a no-nonsense instrument built for speed and performance. An extension of our form-follows-function philosophy, no curve is out of place on the newest Niner. And while looks are important, true attraction begins as soon as you push on the pedals and the Air 9 RDO goes flat out.

Refined Design

The Air 9 RDO is specifically intended as a geared racing bike. With this in mind we referred to the purposeful lines of the Air 9 Carbon but reduced diameters and trimmed profiles throughout.

  • Compared to the CYA bottom bracket shell of the Air 9 Carbon, the smaller PF30 shell of the Air 9 RDO suggested smaller junctions and negated the need for an alloy insert.
  • The rear brake mount is tucked inside the curving stays to distribute twisting forces evenly, permitting smaller caliper mounts and decreased wall thicknesses.
  • Even the headset races in the headtube are molded carbon – we shaved grams wherever we found them.

The net result? A 1125g Niner frame that is going to knock your socks off.

Tapered Headtube

The benefits of a tapered headtube aren’t just for riders of long travel bikes. XC racers and riders also see significant advantages, which is why we incorporate the technology in all our new frames. By using the newest tapered steerer suspension forks, we create the stiffest front end possible – leading to increased steering precision as you carve a corner and descend toward the finish line.

The integrated headset used in the Air 9 RDO is light and simple. Installation, cleaning and maintenance take seconds rather than minutes, a boon to anyone who queues up at the starting line without a team mechanic.

Internal Shifter Routing

New aluminum headbadge designed for full-length housing simplifies cable changes and protects cables from the elements.

PF30 Bottom Bracket

There are several BB standards to choose from – for our dedicated geared only race bike we like PF30. It’s compatible with any BB30 crankset and the bearing cups are delightfully easy to install. The oversized 30mm spindle is light and resists the torque of even the mightiest Ninerds. Oversized bearings spin longer and smoother between overhauls. The plastic cups of the PF30 BB system don’t require a machined aluminum bottom bracket shell insert, allowing a minimalist carbon construction.

Real World Weight Savings

Is it lighter than the Air 9 Carbon? Yes, quite a bit. The Air 9 RDO averages 1125g for a Medium frame (without seat collar or protective downtube tape). That’s over a half-pound less than its brother. If getting there as quickly as possible is your game, you will want to throw a leg over the Air 9 RDO.

The first 50 Air 9 RDOs are available to our North American riders as a special edition XTR complete bike with matching Sid World Cup fork and components in either Niner Green or Licorice Black in Size Medium or Large only. We offer a five year warranty on all Niner carbon frames and components, including our new Air 9 RDO. We are honored to have you choose our bikes as your own – we take great care with our design, testing and engineering programs and are proud to earn your trust and loyalty.

Niner employees are passionate riders who believe that time spent on the trails with friends is as important as time spent in the office. Scraped knees, riding tales, and camp fire smell in our jackets remind us of our primary goal – building beautiful, dependable bikes that you will enjoy as much as we do.

Observant Ninerds probably spotted the Niner seatpost collar in the Air 9 RDO pictures above – we aren’t just offering these collars on the new bike – they are available to everyone via our Niner Store. So go ahead and add some color to your bike with anodized aluminum collars available in Red, Blue or Black, 34.9mm and 28.6mm sizes at $20.

Sometimes, we engineer very simple things. Like cardboard boxes. It seems like a small thing, but knowing that your new Niner is going to show up at the shop in perfect condition is very important to us. Recently, we have spent time creating a new box for our complete bikes – we not only worked on technical drawings, but we also gave it some real world abuse. Barrett (our product manager – he is the guy that specs all the parts on your Niner) and Eric (our testing engineer) demonstrate below:

Niner Offices Around the Country!

We thought you might enjoy this glimpse into the inner workings of the Niner crew from NBC news! Niner Bikes was recently featured in an NBC news segment about virtual offices. About half of our employees work remotely (you will notice that they all are located in placed where the mountain biking is really great, heh) and our demo drivers work from all over the country.

With the extremely mild winter that most regions have experienced, it’s a great time to start thinking about building. Trail groups all over the US are gearing up to get a head start on what’s looking to be an early riding season and they need your help. Never helped shape a switchback? Don’t know a Pulaski from a McLeod? Don’t worry, Trail Days are community efforts and all you need is the desire to help. Visit the IMBA website to find out how to join or buy a great book about how to build good trails. Great trails don’t build themselves!

Since 1988, IMBA has been bringing out the best in mountain biking by encouraging low-impact riding, volunteer trailwork participation, cooperation among different trail user groups, grassroots advocacy and innovative trail management solutions.

Clemmons Bicycle, Clemmons, NC

Clemmons Bicycle is a local institution, founded in 1969 by a family with a passion for bikes. Still going strong, the shop is currently owned by longtime employees of the original family – Josh and Travis – and a source of community for the local riding scene.

With a combined 32 years of bike industry experience, Josh and Travis know that riding together and learning are key parts of having fun on your bike. To that end, Clemmons Bicycle hosts both group and private maintenance classes (call to arrange or get more info), group rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays (call to get trailhead info) and even works with local Boy Scout troops on their bicycle merit badge program.

Almost every employee of Clemmons rides a Niner – the Air 9 the EMD 9, the Jet 9 RDO and the Air 9 Carbon are popular choices for the local terrain. You may have seen the shop team on their Air 9 Carbon with custom shop decals – it is hard to miss the yellow!

If you want to join the Clemmons crew on a Niner demo bike, no problem. Clemmons has a robust demo fleet, including:

JET 9 RDO – MD, LG
AIR 9 CARBON – SM, MD, LG, XL
JET 9- LG
ONE 9 – LG

Look for Clemmons on Facebook and on their website. Call them here if you have questions.

Hammerhead Bikes, Tulsa, OK

HammerHead Bikes is one of those classic stories – a group of friends on a race team loved 29ers. The local shops told them that 29ers were a fad, but they didn’t agree. So, they did what any self respecting Ninerds would do and formed their own shop, and are now up to five employees and a storefront!

For the last three years, HammerHead has been a standout Niner dealer. Their enthusiasm for 29 has helped to grow the scene in Tulsa as has their willingness to welcome new riders. Owners Scott and Ginger are always on the shop floor to answer questions and are more than happy to help you get set up on a Niner demo bike. If you don’t know the local area, they will even send one of the shop employees out to ride with you.

Niner Demos at Hammerhead:

Jet9 – SM, MD, LG, XL
RIP 9 – MD, LG, XL
JET 9 RDO – XL (call for availability)

Hammerhead hosts free MTB skills clinics every month, the next one on February 19th. Call the shop for locations and details, or to arrange a demo bike for the event. You can also join the HammerHead MTB group rides on Sunday mornings – they post info on their
facebook page and are happy to chat on the phone, too.

Finally, Hammerhead is currently giving away an AIR 9 Carbon frame – click the link for details on how to win!

Coupon code is good for 10% off retail in the Niner store, until Feb 29, while supplies last.
