Easton has announced a bearing upgrade for its M1-series rear hubs to boost durability and make the hubs compatible with the popular rear thru-axle systems. Easton currently uses these hubs in its EC90 XC, EA90 XC, EC70 Trail, Haven, Haven Carbon, Havoc, and EA90 XD wheelsets.
The first change is the elimination of the adjustable bearing preload cap. Riders were able to change the preload on their bearings to optimize friction and lateral play. But this feature was more of a liability as the perfect setting was rarely achieved as the cap could work itself loose on trail rides. A new cap leaves it at the perfect setting.
The second improvement are bigger bearings with a support sleeve between the two bearings. This reduces load on the bearings.
This upgrade is available for compatible hubs free of charge. But the upgrade kit cannot be parted out as all the pieces need to be used together for proper operation. If the customer wants to switch from rear skewer to rear thru-axle type, they can purchase the compatible end caps from Easton.
If the customer has a hub that cannot be upgraded to the new system, they can send their wheels back to Easton where the hub can be replaced and the wheelset rebuilt for a fee.
These upgrades can be done by the consumer now since there are a ton of awesome How-To videos on the Easton website.
