NICA Spring Racing to Commence in Three Leagues
High School Mountain Bike Racing starts Sunday
BERKELEY, Calif.—The National Interscholastic Cycling Association’s 2011 spring race season starts this February 27th in northern California, with southern California and Washington leagues following shortly after on March 6th, and April 3rd, respectively.
NICA’s Executive Director, Matt Fritzinger, said, “With over 1200 riders set to compete in our west coast leagues it’s going to be a very exciting spring. The fitness these kids achieve riding and racing their mountain bikes is one thing, but also we’re seeing many coaches, team staff and parents riding a lot, too. Having teamwork that spans several generations like this is the kind of thing that helps improve our gross national wellness.”
The NorCal series, which has been running since 2001, includes five races, February 27 – May 1, and the California state championship, May 15.
The SoCal series, now entering its third season, will have four races, March 6 – May 1, and the California state championship.
The Washington series, in its inaugural year, includes two events, April 3 and May 1.
This year, Northern California starts its process of breaking into two sections by holding a prologue event, the first event of the series, with one race for schools in the northern part of the region and another for the southerly schools.
The special and unique quality of NICA events can be fully appreciated only by attending an event. Cycling specialist journalists who have not yet attended a NICA event are encouraged to do so this year, to find out first-hand what all the fuss is about.
One of the main targets of NICA is to have a coast-to-coast network of high school mountain biking leagues by the year 2020.
