Mtbr showed up and was shocked to see about 1500 people in the series opener. Coaches, parents, siblings, pets were there in force to cheer on about 500+ racers. Some were the best in the country and many were first time racers who have not been mountain biking for very long.
Here is a video highlight of some of the day’s festivities.
We learned that about 25 High Schools are represented in the league but there are also a ton of ‘independents’ who race for themselves as their own high school does not have a team yet. Usually, these individuals are taken on to train with another high school team.
We have not seen this kind of inertia in a mountain bike race in the last 10 years. There was excitement, camaraderie and competitiveness. It just makes sense though as this race is supported by the best people in the world, the avid mountain bikers. Mountain bikers started the league, hardcore racers are coaching the league, and parents are helping and guiding training rides for their children.
When we pass the mountain biking fire to the next generation, we would have accomplished something great. Norcal NICA has gotten the ball rolling by working hard for the last 11 years. And now, they are spearheading the way for the rest of High Schools in the USA.
Notes: Mtbr has opened a special forum for High School and Collegiate Racing.
