Bad Goisern – There is a hustle and a bustle at the Marktplatz in Bad Goisern. The final installations for the Salzkammergut Moutainbike Trophy and today’s biker’s presentation are in the home straight, however this is just the beginning: between 5:00 am and 12:15 pm a total of 4.200 bikers from 36 nations are going to challenge Europe’s toughest marathon.
In any case Austria’s top ski jumper Andreas Goldberger and Andreas Schifferer, seven times ski downhill winner and Olympic bronze medallist in Super G during the 2002 Olympics, are going to be at the start. Both winter sporting aces will tackle the 114 km distance with altitude difference 3,914 m in scorching heat. Unfortunately Bernhard Gruber had to cancel due to illness on short notice; he will be spared 35 degree Celsius as forecasted.
Last year’s onset of winter seems to be “snow from yesterday”. According to the weather forecast it will remain warm and dry until late afternoon, what the weather will be like after that is still open until late in the evening. “In any case we are prepared for any weather and are able to reroute the courses if necessary” says Pamela Binder tourism CEO for the Dachstein-Salzkammergut.
It will be really interesting to see: favourites from Trampusch to Kogler, Hager to Deubler
On the long distance with more than 211km all eyes are currently on Gerhard Trampusch. The experienced street biker and Tour de France participant will tackle for the first time a mountain bike competition. With his fitness and light weight he could surprise everyone. Great chances of winning have Tomas Trunschka from Czech Republic as well as Stefan Kogler who knows the competition really well and is in top form at the moment. Favourite among the women is for sure Lisi Hager former 24 h world champion. Also at the start: the Swiss Urs Huber at the 114km distance who was second when he had to cancel last year due to the weather as well as Manuel Pliem. Among the local heroes: Martina Deubler from Goisern. After giving birth to two daughters she has an incredible run ands could be the winner of the 50 km distance.
