HAVERHILL, Mass. (March 1, 2010) – Today Pedro’s announced its move to historic Haverhill, Massachusetts where the company has taken up residence in one of the city’s notable architectural sites to begin the next chapter of the Pedro’s tale. Built in 1912, the Burgess Building was the centerpiece of the region’s once-thriving shoe industry. Now nearly a century later, the Burgess Building has has undergone a “facelift” in keeping with Pedro’s mission and ethos while staying loyal to its solid New England foundation. As the country’s first poured concrete structure, the overbuilt edifice now houses Pedro’s headquarters and research and development facility.
The decision to move Pedro’s was motivated primarily by company values to “walk the talk” environmentally and foster a culture of compassion, and to promote the bicycle as an instrument of good. In keeping with Pedro’s mission to create innovative solutions through sustainable means, an extensive overhaul that featured carbon- and money-saving “green” initiatives was undertaken prior to the move. Efforts included upgraded energy-efficient lighting, new thermal, double-hung windows allowing for fresh air in the summer (saving cooling costs) and improved insulation in the winter, FLOR™ recycled carpet, Plyboo® bamboo cubicle structures, ultra-low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint, dual-flush toilets, a kitchen crafted from reclaimed materials, and top-rated Energy Star appliances.
“The move for us was driven by the desire to take our people out of cars and put them on bikes or public transportation,” stated Pedro’s CEO, Christopher Zigmont. “Our new location is across the street from a rail line served by both Boston’s commuter train and Amtrak, which allows visitors and employees alike to leave the car at home. By abandoning the corporate park in the middle of nowhere and integrating the company into a resurgent city such as Haverhill, everybody benefits. By utilizing an existing structure, we demonstrate both cost savings and environmental value in a city’s landscape. We hope it’s an inspiration for others.”
“I’m so pleased and proud to welcome Pedro’s to Haverhill,” said Mayor James J. Fiorentini. “The company and its mission fits so well with our Smart-Growth, Transit-Oriented Downtown. As a bike-friendly community, Haverhill is pleased to be the headquarters of this internationally-respected bicycle care products company. Their commitment to environmentally-sustainable products makes Pedro’s one of the best of our growing list of green companies in the City, and we want to do everything we can to help Pedros thrive here forever.”
