Below are the results from the 3 Ring Circus mountain bike race held on Sunday 25 July in the Southern Highlands of NSW.
The 2010 Circus has performed, The Big Top has been pulled down for another year and the clowns on bikes have returned to rehearsals in the hope of better things next year. There were certainly some wild acrobatics as performers flew over handlebars and slid into the jaws of waiting lions.
Conditions were perfect in Wingello State Forest with the trails is great condition for the 50km of racing combining the Blue Ring (6km), Red Ring (25km) and Yellow Ring (19km). It was close racing for the first 20km or so with Brent Miller, Shaun Lewis, Andy Fellows Troy Glennan and Brad Morton in a lead group of 5 until Shaun took a tumble. Being a bit shook up and cut up, Andy and Troy escorted Shaun back to the Big Top for some treatment thus foregoing their chances in the race. But indeed that is the spirit of mountain biking.
In the end Brent Miller from Canberra went on to win in 1:56:55 with veteran rider Paul Rowney from Sydney 2nd in 1:59:35 closely followed by Anthony Shippard in 1:59:53. Jenny Fay from Sydney was a clear winner in the Womens with a fantastic time of 2:06:45 putting her in 15th position overall. Becky Mates from the NSW South Coast was 2nd in 23:17:08 followed by ACT rider Trudy Nicholas in 2:23:09.
As Hoola Hoop and juggling lessons went on for the kids at the Big Top, there were all sorts of impressive performances out on the trails; none more so than Mark Lavis completing the 3 Ring Circus in 3:24:18 – on a unicycle! Mark placed 424th out of 570 riders and teams to finish!
