Looking at the numbers, the 150mm of travel is a ground-breaker. It just isn’t that easy to fit that much travel in a 29er and still maintain a fun and quick-handling bike. Only the 155mm travel Specialized Enduro 29er has this much travel for this wheel size. And the 17.1 inch chainstays means that the TF01 is going to be ok in the quickness and fun-factor department. Often, bikes of this travel resort to 18-inch stays and end up being sluggish.
The frame weight too is quite surprising at 5.5 lbs. This is a big travel bike that can handle most downhill courses, but it looks like BMC has figured out how us carbon fiber’s high strength to weight ratio to deliver a lightweight bike that can handle the most demanding courses around.
As far as climbing is concerned, BMC had their bases covered already with APS suspension. This design has a slightly rearward travel path and thus have anti-squat characteristics while climbing. Thus chain tension keeps this suspension stable to deliver an efficient climbing platform.
Other Design features include:
- 67 degree head angle with 51 mm offset fork
- Low bottom bracket height with 30 mm drop
- Long reach top tube to optimize for 50 mm stems and wide bars
- Internal cable routing
- Integrated chainstay protection
Couple all this with the Swiss attention to design and detail and we may have a pretty dramatic breakthrough here for BMC.
